How does intra-urban relocation of large employers influence employees' residential location and mobility patterns?
I'm looking for social science articles -- in English/German -- that focus on companies moving within a city/metropolitan area and associated changes in employees' residential location and daily commuting patterns. Papers dealing with issues of staff turnover as a result of intra-urban company relocation are also very welcome. The reading material will be used for a M.Sc. group research project.
In New Zealand, sometime last year - TrustPower was a large employer that relocated intra-urbanally, from one end of a provincial city, to the centre of the city. (Tauranga). At the time it was suggested this was highly responsible for altered traffic cngestion patterns, loss of central city parking in central parking buildings, to the call centre staff for that company, and other impacts. Several staff members made housing changes/choices due to the changes and there were impacts on families as school journeys were adjusted for work-routine balance. I know you are not in NZ, but offer this anecdotally and as a recent example here, if anyone wants to research it. I also acknowledge your pursuit of this kind of research, Henrike.
Maybe an alternative scenario would be "extinction" of the company instead of "relocation". In the sense of analysis of the vacuum left by the extinction and relocation, through the conceptual lenses of mobility, path dependence and lock-in.
We implemented a research project on intra-urban mobilities in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi (Vietnam), the main results of which were published in the following book (downloadable from RG):
Gubry Patrick, Lê Thi Huong, Nguyên Thi Thiêng, Pham Thuy Huong, Trân Thi Thanh Thuy, Vu Hoang Ngân (Dir.)/ Nguyễn Thị Thiềng, Lê Thị Hương, Phạm Thúy Hương, Vũ Hoàng Ngân, Trần Thị Thanh Thủy, Gubry Patrick (Chủ biên), 2008, Bouger pour vivre mieux. Les mobilités intra-urbaines à Hô Chi Minh Ville et Hanoi (Viêt-nam)/ Di chuyển để sống tốt hơn. Di dân nội thị tại Thành Phố Hồ Chí Minh và Hà Nội (Việt Nam). Hanoi : Université nationale d’économie/ Hà Nội : Nhà Xuất Bản Trường Đại Học Kinh Tế Quốc Dân, 293 p. + 278 tr.
It is both in French and Vietnamese, but of course it can be easily translated via a tool like Google Translate.
We notably found that 13.2% of the households in Ho Chi Minh City and 14.5% in Hanoi moved to be closer from their workplace (p. 133).
