Has anybody have done any research on young children's identity development?

I understand that many researchers, such as Erikson, Marcia, and Cote, believed that identity development begins at adolescence stage, but I would like to know if anybody has done any research on young children's identity development?

Check out the work of Michael Lewis from quite some time ago within the context of emotional development.  Dr. Lewis is at Rutger's University.  The attached paper also addresses the issue.

Yes, there is a some good research..  A good place to start is my book called "Culture as Comfort".  See Chapters4-6.  And there I reference some of the academic literature on learning gender, race, etc..  But this book explains how we learn culture and, of course, "identity" must be learned.
