Ethical concerns in career counseling. What is the big deal?
What is the importance of ethics in career counseling especially in the 21st century?

It is generally felt that motive for being unethical is financial gains. People strive to accumulate more money and self-interests as a fact of life. These motives are strong enough for individuals to even legitimize unethical behavior. Career counseling in general appears to be an area of science that is still hanging between management consulting and psychiatry. Ethical standards in career counseling are critical as counseling services have a profound impact on clients’ career path, future, and quality of life. Ethics in career counseling and pretty much in all business sectors are primarily an individual decision before being enforced standards. As a professional area that involves a profound personal interaction between clients and counselors, it is critical to establish trust and credibility through ethics. Accordingly, ethics in career counseling can be looked at as an opportunity for counselors to facilitate their analysis rather than a challenge.

It's a big deal when you spend a lot of money to follow that career thru university training that did not fully prepare you for far learning transfer of your skills and knowledge. The latter was my experience in pursuing studies abroad that offered a host-country curriculum. As a result, when I returned home it took a while to understand the needs to the local education system and grapple with how to modify my foreign training to the local needs. The attached further elaborates on the issue and sheds light on why career counseling is a big deal when you are advised to attend foreign universities.

Dear Onyeka Uche Ofili
In my opinion, one of the big problems may be the lack of communicative culture in companies about ethical and responsible aspects. I sent a paper on this subject.

@ Pedro. Do you mean lack of proper communication between the counselor and his client (student, employee etc)? So in that case you are suggesting that both parties should clearly agree on maintaining certain ethical standards from the start. But the client may not be too aware of what these standards are (although some may know). the burden should be on the counselor to maintain high ethical standards and he or she should by no means take undue advantage of the client. Confidentiality should be maintained except when is absolutely unavoidable such as public interest etc. I really appreciate your contribution and look forward to reading more from you.

The burden should be for the counselor: maintaining high ethical standards, communications and confidentiality necessary. In the case of our paper, the company has made ethical and responsible actions, but adequate communication has not been achieved to guide professionally in these ethical and responsible values its workers.
