Siemens LOGO is the smallest PLC in the Siemens Product Line. With extension modules you can control 16 digital outputs, however, it is possible to cascade several LOGOs. I like the LOGO very much for small applications, e.g. home automation in which I use it for several years now. The current generation provides ethernet communication so you can also attach a graphical IO terminal. LOGO is available in 24V and 230V (whereas the digital inputs also support 230 V AC). The programming language is of LOGO is function block diagrams according to the standard IEC 61131-3 and very easy to understand. Thus, LOGO is a cheap and reasonable control also for training and learning. It is very feasible for small test stands. However, you cannot do accurate measurement with it (as e.g. with LabView). On the other hand, it is very easy to implement a reliable and independend control (even e.g. with backup batteries) while the actual measurement is done with other software.

LOGO is a very simple platform to learn PLC programming.
Contact your Siemens supplier, they usually have discounts for students.
On the above project we wanted to use LOGO but it was unable to do computations
for astronomical contour calculations. We had to do solar tracking on Siemens S7-1200 PLC to accomodate SPA computations.

In this paper an effective design approach to the design of hierarchical control architectures for the automation industrial plants is presented. The main characteristic of the solution is the clear and structural separation between “policies” and “actions” deriving from the use of a novel abstract entity in modelling automation plants: the General...
