I believe that a researcher of Africa would mention cassava.
It is interesting to observe how different americans vegetables "conquered" specific regions of the world.
How to Think Italian cuisine without the tomato? Or Indian spices without the American peppers (capsicum)?

I agree with Christian. The "spanish omelette" is made of eggs and fried potatoes...so I said potatoes.
Kind regards

Hi Cees!
Actually there are many varieties of potatoes.
The most amazing is to think that all were created through selection processes promoted by man!

Definitely the tobacco is the most widely used plant of american origin. It is used worldwide: you can see smokers in both polar regions and on the five continents. On the islands, submarines and aeroplanes.
Only the International Space Station was an exception.
Although even that could change since 1:07 p.m. EDT., when a smoke-like smell aboard the International Space Station (ISS) prompted an afternoon scare for three astronauts aboard the orbital laboratory, mission managers said Monday.
The station's three-astronaut crew reported a smoke-like smell in the laboratory's Russian segment and initially reported smoke itself,
Maybe someone smoked in the Zvezda module...

Very good point! András!
Recently, our laboratory published an article about the history of the spread of tobacco: http://tinyurl.com/m3457xr
