ABSTRACT Medicinal plants have bioactive compounds which are used for curing of various human diseases and also play an important role in healing.Medicinal plants have antifungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammation activities, due to presence of phytochemicals in them. Phytochemicals have two categories i.e., primary and secondary constituents. Primary constituents have chlorophyll, proteins sugar and amino acids. Secondary constituents contain terpenoids and alkaloids. Chlorophyll being one of the important primary metabolite is the precursor to many of the secondary metabolites. The present study involves ten different medicinal plants locally available in Durg - Bhilai (Chhattisgarh) region. In the present study, the chlorophyll was extracted from the leaves of plants which are being used as test plants. This was characterized by spectroscopy. Concentration of chlorophyll a and b was calculated using N,N-Dimethyl formamide incubation method. Azadirachta indica was identified as having maximum chlorophyll content (3.206 mg/ gram of fresh weight of leaf) as compared to other test plants.
