Our Lab, at the Chemistry Department of Swansea University, bridges Quantum Chemistry and Chemical Engineering to design and develop Nature-inspired materials for a circular economy. We work in close collaboration with other research groups worldwide, and we focus on materials with applications in energy harvesting and storage, resilient infrastructure, biomedicine, and precision agriculture.

Project
This research project explores the use of more sustainable and economically viable solutions to repair cracked asphalt pavements by the action of biopolymeric microcapsules, where different renewable resource-based polymers obtained from marine and lignocellulosic biomass waste, will be used as encapsulation materials for virgin and recycled rejuvenating agents. The adopted methodology will be experimental and numerical, combining material characterisation techniques with multi-scale modelling, as well as Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) to bottom-up design the materials, fully characterising them and evaluating their actual production.
