The objective of this study was to describe the circumstances that promoted the implementation of the new Program for Action Against Tuberculosis in Brazil (Programa de Ação na Luta contra a Tuberculose no Brasil) and discuss the strategies used by registered nurses from the Santa Maria State Hospital, Guanabara State, to adjust nursing care to the new program against tuberculosis. This was performed through document research, interviews, and statements from nurses working at the time of the reorganization. Documents were analyzed based on the concepts of habitus, field, and symbolic power by Pierre Bourdieu, and included written and oral documents as well as secondary sources. The reorganization of the nursing service was performed under the leadership of a nurse whose symbolic capital assigned power and prestige to implement the necessary changes. It is concluded that the work of that nurse made it possible to implement the new program and contributed to establishing the position and importance of the registered nurse in providing care to individuals with tuberculosis, for prevention and cure.

With the objective to describe the evolution of the discipline "Administration Applied to Nursing", in the period from 1980 to 1995, courses' plans texts write by the academic staff responsible for their elaboration and execution were studied. Texts of the items "Objectives and Content" were analyzed under the point of view of Phenomenology, being submitted to the process of analysis of speech defined by Martins and Bicudo. The result of the procedures used in the analysis, allowed the identification of six categories of thinking: Nursing Management, Ideological and Politic Bases for Nursing Management, Comunication as an Instrument to Managing, Management of Physics Resources, Management of Material Resources and Management of Human Resources. The modification in the courses' plans observed during the studied period, evidenced two important moments--one at the end of the eighties, were the reformulation of the ideological basis which the discipline basis was adapted and another at the end of the first five years of the nineties, with curricular reorganization. The identification of this course allowed the follow-up and comprehension of the development of the discipline, providing resources for analysis of the correlated disciplines of the same discipline in other contexts and experiences.

This study describes the relationship between nursing doctoral dissertations and research lines defined by the Brazilian Nursing field in three areas: professional, care and organizational. It isa descriptive-exploratory research, based on reports of Graduate Programs evaluated by CAPES and on The Informative Guide of Nursing Research and Researchers CEPEn/ ABEn, from 1983 to 2001, totalling 448 abstracts. The care field includes the greatest production, followed by the organizational and professional areas. The studies disclose tendency towards the qualitative approach revealing possibilities for a more profound knowledge about reality or a more through understanding of social phenomena related to nursing practice. On the other hand, studies on interventions in professional practice and technological development are still under construction.

This study reported family's reaction of the child terminally ill, identified by the pediatric nurses. It focuses on the suggested assistance to the family and on the pediatric nurses difficulties in this situation. This study was carried out with 35 nurses working at two University Hospitals. As a part of one survey about health conditions in institutionalized children, the nutritional status were evaluated. Data were obtained through antropometric assessment in a sample of 111 pre-school children matriculated in a small official day-care center in Perus-SP. According to Gomez, 50.0% of all that children were classified as malnourished, 23.4% of them in the I degree; 22.4% in II degree and only 4.3% in III degree. Taking into account the Waterlow's classification there was a highest frequency of cronic-actual malnutrition (30.8%) concentrated in children between 12-48 months of age. Additionally, these children presented highest incidence of infective-respiratory and intestinal diseases. These evidences lead on to the improvement of the follow-up of children growth and food consumption, specially that under 24 meses, to attempt for an early identification of malnutrition, thus increasing the chance of nutritional recuperation.

Physical and financial production (%) of SUS hospitalizations processed/paid by the SIH-SUS, according to the medical specialty. HCFMRP-USP-1996-2003
Hospitalizations represent an important share of healthcare, due to both the complexity of actions and the financial volume applied. This descriptive-exploratory investigation had the purpose to identify and describing the physical and financial production of hospitalizations performed in a school hospital in the state of São Paulo, from 1996 to 2003, focusing the specialties of surgical clinic, medical clinic, pediatrics and obstetrics. Data collection was performed by searching the official databanks of the studied institution. In that period, a global 8.5% reduction in the frequency of admittances and a 78.4% increase in the financial resources were observed. Surgical clinic, with more expensive procedures, increased its admittances; the production in obstetrics showed the lowest variation. The increasing incorporation of technology, the demands from regional users and the migration of users from the supplementary system to the SUS may justify the variation of production in the different specialties.

Distribution of injuries according to AIS-98 and AIS-05 severity scores. São Paulo-SP, 2005
-ISS and NISS values according to the AIS-98 and AIS- 05 versions. São Paulo -SP, 2005
Objectives: This study aims to compare injury and trauma severity as measured by the 1998 and 2005 revisions of the Abbreviated Injury Sca le and to determine the mortality in the Injury Severity Score and the New Injury Severity Score in both versions. Method: This cross-sectional retrospective study analyzed injuries of trauma patients from three university hospitals in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Each injury was coded using the Abbreviated Injury Scale 1998 and 2005. The statistical tests applied were the Wilcoxon, McNemar-Bowker, Kappa, and Z tests. Results: Comparing the two versions resulted in significant disagreement regard ing the scores of certain body regions. With the 2005 version, injury and trauma severity levels were significantly decreased, and the mortality was higher at lower scores. Conclusion: Injury and trauma severity were decreased and the percentage mortality was changed when the 2005 revision of the Abbreviated Injury Scale was used.

-----Evolução da Cobertura do TS em municípios prioritários no Estado de São Paulo para o controle da TB com população maior que 600 mil habitantes -São Paulo -1998 -2004
The Supervised Treatment (ST) in the 36 priority municipalities for TB control of the State of São Paulo between 1998 and 2004 was analyzed with the aim of describing the coverage of the DOTS. This exploratory study used information from the State of São Paulo's Health Secretary's EPI-TB database. An instrument of data collection was elaborated and the coverage of the ST was calculated. The data was put in the Excel program. In the municipalities that implemented the ST in 1998, coverage was under 20%. In 1999 half of the municipalities had coverage between 11% and 49%. In 2000, the implementation was 100%, but the maximum coverage was 61%. Between 2001 and 2002 the coverage increased in 69.44% of the municipalities. In 2003, coverage was below of 50% in 22 municipalities. In 2004 there was a trend to increasing coverage in 63.89% of the municipalities.

This study analyzed the quality of the Live Birth Information System in the State of (SINAC) Paraná, Brazil, from 2000 to 2005, through the percentage of undeclared variables, using a database provided by the State Health Department. Quality was analyzed using the following scale: excellent, undeclared percentage<1%; good between 1% and 2.99%; regular between 3% and 6.99%; and poor>7%. The quality in completing the SINAC in Paraná was excellent, especially as of year 2003. The mothers' occupation, classified as regular and poor, was the variable with the lowest quality in all Regional Health Departments. Live births, stillbirths, and race/color varied between poor and excellent quality. There is a need to improve the quality of the variables marital status and stillbirths in all Regional Health Departments. The excellence of the SINAC demonstrated its potential as a source of health information in Paraná.

Based on data available in the Information System for Notifiable Diseases, predictive factors of favorable results were identified in the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis, diagnosed between 2001 and 2004 and living in Recife-PE, Brazil. Uni- and multivariate logistic regression methods were used. In multivariate analysis, the following factors remained: Age (years), 0 to 9 (OR = 4.27; p = 0.001) and 10 to 19 (OR = 1.78; p = 0.011), greater chance of cure than over 60; Education (years), 8 to 11 (OR = 1.52; p = 0.049), greater chance of cure than no education; Type of entry, ne wcase s (OR = 3.31; p < 0.001) and relapse (OR = 3.32; p < 0.001), greater chances of cure than restart after abandonment; Time (months) 2, 5--6 (OR = 9.15; p < 0.001); 6--9 (OR = 27.28; p < 0.001) and More than 9 (OR = 24.78; p < 0.001), greater chances of cure than less than 5; Health Unit District, DSII (OR = 1.60; p = 0.018) and DSIIV (OR = 2.87; p < 0.001), greater chance sof cure than DS II.

The Doctoring Interunits in Nursing Program was the first created in Latin America and has titled 290 nurses until the second semester of 2004. This study presents some thesis characteristics upheld in the program, focusing the thematic areas and research methods used. The summaries of 287 theses supported until the first semester of 2004, have been analyzed. The most investigated fields up to now were: Children, Woman, Adult/ Elderly Health and Education. The quantitative research method predominated until the end of the 80's, since then an intense production of qualitative method researches started to occur. Still in the first decade of the program, the themes started to talk about the aspects that connect the practice of nursing to the political and social contexts, converging to the current program's paradigmatic axis: "Theoretical, philosophical, historical bases of knowledge and of the nursing practice."

Therapeutic Intervention Scoring System-28 (TISS-28) is a tool that enables the measurement of the nursing work load in Intensive Care Units and the estimate of how grave the disease is. In this study are presented the operational definitions for its application, proposed by a group of specialists in the area, with the aim of rendering uniform the meaning of each of the items and preventing interpretation biases.

REEUSP has been a trimestrial journal since 1998, which publishes 11 to 13 articles per issue on different nursing subareas; most of them on teaching, health technology, adult health (in its different specialties), mental and psychiatric health. The article and research emphasis keeps on the hospital. For being linked to a teaching unit, it presents quality on its publishing; many times produced from thesis and dissertations. It faces the challenge of stimulating the publishing of authors from other institutions; for not becoming endogenous. On the last 10 years, it received and published articles from 18 Brazilian states and several country cities from Sao Paulo State. Its graphic design was also remodeled for 2003, allowing higher clearness and easiness for reading. It accepts exchange with other journals and it is indexed on many basis. It was gotten a C international classification by CAPES.

This study investigated associations between the ways for coping with stress and the presence of depressive symptoms in a sample of 100 ulcerative colitis (UC) outpatients who are treated at the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinic at the School of Medicine of the University of São Paulo's Hospital das Clínicas, in the city of São Paulo. Patients were compared to a control group made up of 100 healthy subjects who kept company to other patients at another unit of the same hospital. To both groups were applied the Folkman and Lazarus's Coping Strategies Questionnaire and the Beck Depression Inventory. Coping strategies most referred to by patients were social support (47%) and positive reappraisal (40%); in the control group, the most reported coping strategy was positive reappraisal (52%). As to humor disorders, 71% of the UC patients were found to show no depressive symptoms (control group's: 78), 9% presented dysphoria (control group: 9%), and 20% showed depressive symptoms (control group: 13%).

The purpose of this study is to investigate the nurses knowledge and actions taken regarding alternative or complementary therapies (AT or CT) at the County (municipal) Health Units of the 71st Administrative District, in Santo Amaro, SP. The research use a quantitative apProach and a qualitative analysis of the field data that showed that 89% of the nurses have confidence in AT/CTs but only 22.2% know the legal basis for its use and 5.5% had courses on the techniques. 44.4% use these therapies on themselves and 11.1% on their patients. Altogether 7 different AT/CTs were listed and classified in 5 Hill's groups. It was found that there is a need for including new knowledge as a complementary option for the promotion of the population's health.

From the view of the historical and dialectic materialism of the nurse work as a social practice insured in the Brasilian capitalistic mode of production of the eighties, these study, through the decomposition of the surgical room nursing work in his three essential elements, search to point the necessary comprehension not only of these components but, mainly, for the agreement of his superstructural relations through the Brazilian mode of production in sense of, with these reflective praxis, search a synthesis, within what I have (what the operating room nurse work is) and, what I want, synthesis which will allow a new practice.

Was examined the influence of depression in the occurrence and pain intensity. Patients presenting advanced cancer (n = 92) were evaluated. The patients were divided in 2 groups, with or without pain during the week preceding the interview. Pain and depression were evaluated. Pain was observed in 62.0% of the cases and lasted 10 months as an average. It was moderate in the majority of patients and severe in 1/5 of them. Depression was related with the presence and intensity of pain. Patients with pain presented higher depression scores than patients without pain (p < 0.05). Higher pain scores were also correlated with higher depressive scores (p < 0.05).

The recommendations for temperature (T°) and relative humidity (RU) for the storage of sterilized materials in Sterilization Central Supply (SCS) vary according to different sources, and are not based on theoretical frameworks or experiments. The practice shows difficulties in controlling these parameters, leading to doubts regarding the maintenance of the sterility of these materials. This article proposed, through a literature review, to identify and analyze the recommendations for T° and RU for the sterile storage area. We did not find any literature that justifies the referred recommendations. Seven articles were included which analyzed the variables T° and RU in the storage area as factors that could affect the sterility of the materials, and showed contradictory results regarding these factors' interference in maintaining the sterility of the materials.
