In water well drilling, with both cable tool and direct or reverse circulation, it is necessary to produce a correct description of the grain size distribution in the subsoil of porous sediments. Guidelines are proposed which can be applied to describe the stratigraphy of the borehole, reaching a reasonable compromise between ease of use on site and a correct scientific approach. Adoption of the Guidelines allows an increase in the qualitative standard of the stratigraphic description and thus an improvement and greater reliability in the geological interpretation of the subsoil, above all from the sedimentological and hydrogeological points of view.

In order to optimize monitoring activities as well to adapt it to legislative framework, since 2011 Piedmont Regional Groundwater Monitoring Network (RMRAS) has undergone several upgrades interesting both number of monitoring points and such points location. This process, according to WFD proceedings, has also involved modifications on the analytical protocol adopted as well as on the final configuration of groundwater bodies (GWB) Main results from first WFD triennium implementation (2009- 2011), by applying the new monitoring system, has had as a consequence a new definition of Chemical Status, according to D.lgs. 30/2009 and Decreto 260/2010, which allows us to express some considerations on the methodological approach proposed by the above mentioned legislation. In general, emerges a very articulated monitoring and classification system which allows to provide additional elements of knowledge than in the past. Others innovative aspects include modulation of monitoring cycles (Surveillance-Operational Monitoring and Punctual Operational Monitoring) related with an upgrade of analytical programs, toward a general approach much more tied to the pressures which are insisting over GWBs. Study of main contaminants occurrences compared with their SQA/ VS allow to obtain a more detailed overview to assess main implications that favored groundwater contamination. Chemical Status definition may be influenced by the natural background values (VF) of certain elements in very specific context. In Piedmont case such phenomena involves Nickel and ChromeVI. VF determination can give as a result VS modification for the considered elements inside the entire GWB area or parts of it. However, difficulties arise when attempting accurate discrimination from mixed contributions (natural + anthropogenic) occurring in complex environmental scenarios.

Il cosiddetto “Quaderno 5” (Servizio Geologico Nazionale 1995; Quaderni serie III, volume 5), dedicato alle linee guida al rilevamento e alla rappresentazione della Carta Idrogeologica d’Italia scala 1:50.000, è piuttosto conosciuto, anche grazie ai suoi 25 anni di vita, ed è anche stato, almeno parzialmente, preso in considerazione per cartografie idrogeologiche elaborate da altre istituzioni (e.g. Boscherini et al. 2005; Celico et al. 2005; Civita et al. 2005; La Vigna e Mazza 2015). Proprio per la sua vetustà, i contenuti del Quaderno 5 attendevano di essere rivisti, anche in base ai risultati della discussione tecnico-scientifica proposta dal Servizio Geologico d’Italia dell’ISPRA nella seconda metà della prima decade del XXI secolo. Nel febbraio scorso è stato presentato nelle sedi deputate il Piano nazionale denominato Proteggitalia (Piano nazionale per la mitigazione del rischio idrogeologico, il ripristino e la tutela della risorsa ambientale, adottato con DPCM 20 febbraio 2019, con successiva approvazione, con Delibera CIPE 24 luglio 2019, del Piano stralcio degli interventi immediatamente cantierabili individuati dal Ministero dell’Ambiente), Piano la cui continuità dovrebbe essere garantita dal nuovo governo. Il Piano si prefigge di mitigare e prevenire il dissesto idrogeologico mediante azioni atte a favorire la messa in sicurezza del nostro Paese, ovvero la realizzazione di opere di manutenzione del territorio e di prevenzione del rischio. Particolare attenzione, oltre agli interventi riconducibili alla gestione delle emergenze e alle azioni di prevenzione dei rischi e manutenzione del territorio, viene dedicata alla semplificazione e rafforzamento della governance. Il piano si configura, dunque, come un riordino, una combinazione e un’integrazione dei vari aspetti, norme, interventi e risorse che nel tempo si sono avvicendate in tema di sicurezza del territorio [...].

The TRUST project is funded by the European Commission’s by the Life+ Programme. The aim of the TRUST project is the identification of the adaption and mitigation measures to counteract the impacts of climate change on the groundwater of the Upper Plain in the Veneto and Friuli region in North-Eastern Italy. The TRUST project aims at implementing a water balance modelling tool to support institutions in formulating sustainable water management planning policies and best practices. This paper reviews the development and application of the tools for the groundwater balance model that simulate the groundwater deficit. Projections on the water deficit as a function of Climate Change have used future precipitation and evapotranspiration patterns derived from climate simulations (SRES-IPCC scenarios A1B and A2) of the Mediterranean region for the 20th and 21st centuries. Model outputs showed that a significant part of future water deficit might be recovered with Managed Aquifer Recharge that will permit the groundwater management preventing the climate change effect.

Nel gennaio 2001 si verificò presso Marcellina (area metropolitana di Roma), alle pendici occidentali dei Monti Lucretili, un fenomeno di sprofondamento catastrofico improvviso. Il sinkhole è collocato in località Pozzo Grande, area pianeggiante posta allo sbocco di diversi valloni che solcano profondamente la dorsale carbonatica (Fig. 1). Dopo molti decenni, fu il primo caso documentato in tempo reale nel territorio provinciale di Roma; la memoria storica porta infatti agli analoghi collassi osservati nella vicina bassa Valle del Tevere, presso Leprignano (l’odierna Capena), ripetutisi ciclicamente tra la fine del XIX secolo e le prime decadi del Novecento (Console e Nisio 2020), in un’area che di recente ha dato segni di attività con l’evento sismico di bassa magnitudo del 4 ottobre 2020 e una serie di boati percepiti nei giorni successivi [...].

The Bouteldja coastal aquifer is one of the most important groundwater resources in North eastern of Algeria. The region is under a sub-humid climate with an average rainfall of 600-880 mm/y. The unconfined aquifer is constituted of Quaternary sands formations. The hydrogeological characteristics were determined based on previous reports. A very important inflow recharges the sandy aquifer in the Southeastern boundary, in relation to a fault network system linking the aquifer and the Obeira Lake area. Another inflow is observed at the Southern boundary in relation to the exchanges with the alluvial aquifer of Bouteldja. The purpose of the present study is to provide an initial assessment of the groundwater flow and water budget of this aquifer. To achieve this goal, a one-layer groundwater flow numerical model was developed using the MODFLOW-2005 code and the FREEWAT software, using the available data. The model was run in steady state conditions. Calibration was achieved using the piezometric measurements of May 2018 as calibration target. After several trials of manual calibrations, the model successfully simulated the groundwater flows directions and heads. Calibration efforts lead to an acceptable concordance (for the purpose of this study) between the estimated and calculated hydraulic conductivity and piezometric heads, except at the Eastern border. The analyses of the simulated inflow budget shows that aside the rainfall infiltration, exchanges with surface water bodies, the adjoining alluvial aquifer and the fault system provide a relevant amount of water. This significant recharge needs additional investigations. This numerical modeling exercise using MODFLOW, the FREEWAT software and GIS reached the objective of a preliminary description of the groundwater flow and it represents an acceptable starting point for more thorough hydrodynamic characterization of the Bouteldja coastal aquifer.

Nauru is a small limestone island in the Pacific region where, as in many small islands in the world, the population heavilyrely upon groundwater as primary freshwater resource, in conjunction with rainwater and desalinated water.The Nauru project started in 2010 and led by Politecnico di Milano (http://nauru.como.polimi.it/), consisted on the hydrogeological characterization of the northern part of the island and the implementation of 3 numerical models for: (1) understanding the mechanisms governing groundwater flow and accumulation, (2) assess the adequate sustainable fresh groundwater exploitation in order to prevent saltwater upconing occurrences in the area more suitable for groundwater extraction and (3) to simulate future scenarios based on climate changes and population growth.

Il Servizio Geologico d’Italia di ISPRA (SGI), nell’ambito di una convenzione (inizio giugno 2018 e termine aprile 2020) con il Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini, sta conducendo alcuni studi finalizzati ad accertare le principali variazioni delle condizioni idrogeologiche di alcune sorgenti e corsi d’acqua verificatesi nel territorio del Parco a seguito degli effetti della sequenza simica 2016-2017 dell’Italia centrale. Il Parco ha garantito i permessi per raggiungere alcune aree sottoposte a vincoli e ha fornito i dati idrogeologici in suo possesso. Inoltre, è stata avviata una raccolta di dati presso gli Enti gestori della risorsa idrica ed altri Enti coinvolti nello studio degli effetti sismici sulle risorse idriche dei Monti Sibillini [...].

The dynamic of groundwater systems feeding several springs of the Sibillini Mountains was deeply affected by nine Mw 5.0÷6.5 seismic events occurred in central Italy starting from August 2016. The strongest shock occurred on October 30th 2016 about 5 km NNE of Norcia Town, 9 km below the surface, as a result of upper crust normal faulting on the nearly 30 km-long Mt Vettore - Mt Bove fault system, a NW-SE trending, SW-dipping fault system outcropping on the western slope of Mt Vettore, the highest peak of Sibillini Mountains. Soon after this event, a general increase of springs and rivers discharge and groundwater levels was observed both in the Visso and Norcia areas, west of the Sibillini Mountains. In the Visso area the hydrogeological changes due to the seismic sequence exhausted in the 2019, while nowadays both discharges and groundwater levels are still higher than before in the Norcia area. Discharge data of the main springs located east, south-east of the Sibillini Mountains were analysed to verify whether the general increase observed on the western side was associated to a decrease on the eastern and southern-east area. The results show that the springs located on the eastern side and southern-east side of Mt Vettore experienced a significant long-term discharge decrease. In this preliminary work, the analysis of the historical discharge series of the Pescara di Arquata spring (SE of Mt Vettore), and its relationship with the Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) shows that the very low discharge values recorded during the post-seismic period are not associated with SPI as low as documented in the past for similar discharges. Moreover, the stable isotopic composition of Pescara di Arquata water during the post-earthquake period is slightly different from that measured before the seismic events; this suggests that a lower amount of water having more enriched isotopic δ18O content reaches the spring after the seismic sequence. These aspects seem to indicate that groundwater circulation in the southern-east area of Sibillini Mountains has been affected by the 2016-2017 seismic sequence.

The Pilato Lake has glacial origin, is located in the Sibillini Mountains, Central Italy, and is characterized by the endemism of the small crustaceous Chirocephalus marchesonii. In the context of a research agreement with the Monti Sibillini National Park, the ISPRA Geological Survey of Italy is carrying on some studies aimed to evaluate the supposed effects of the 2016–2017 Central Italy earthquakes on the hydrogeological conditions controlling the lake’s evolution. The study, started in July 2018, aims primarily at the reconstruction of the geological and hydrogeological subsoil setting, beneath the valley hosting the lake. In order to define the conceptual model of groundwater circulation and, thus, to evaluate the emptying and recharge seasonal cycle of the lake, hydrogeological surveys and geophysical investigations were performed. The research program is still in progress and only preliminary results may be proposed. The hydrogeological surveys demonstrate the absence of geomorphological evidence of seismic-induced surface fractures generated by the seismic sequence 2016-2017. Consequently, the complete drying of the lake, occurred in summer 2017, was probably due to meteoclimatic reasons and/ or to not yet verified variations in the permeability characteristics of the surficial deposits and/or bedrock affecting the infiltration towards the subsoil, caused by the severe seismic shaking. The low electrical conductivity values of the lake’s waters are in accordance with the prevailing origin of the lake’s recharge by snow melting and direct rainfall. As concerns the first geophysical surveys in the Pilato Lake area, seismic surveys by surface wave method assessed that the maximum thickness of debris here estimated is about 12.5-14 m. As a whole, the factors responsible for the progressive lowering of the lake level are: i) the water overflow through the Fonte del Lago spring, ii) the evaporation from the lake surface and iii) the drainage through the scarcely permeable glacial deposits towards the Basal Calcareous Aquifer, hosted within the limestone at lower altitude.

The Slovenian case study in the EU HORIZON 2020 FREEWAT project was Vrbanski Plato aquifer. Slovenia is divided into two river basin districts: the Danube and the North Adriatic. The Vrbanski Plato aquifer, which he presents both natural and artificial bank filtration from the river Drava, is a part of the Danube river basin district and is the most important water source for 14 municipalities in the northeastern part of Slovenia. We investigated the groundwatersurface water interaction between river Drava and the porous aquifer in the geological old riverbed and possible reduction of city impact. This site is the oldest managed artificial groundwater recharge with riverbank filtration and has more than thirty years of successful operation. It is something special, very abundant in a small space, independent of drought and climate changes, but vulnerable due to the impact of the city. Under the city there is watershed dividing, which is shifting with different water management condition and we would like to have the least possible impact of the city. For optimal water management we decided to use FREEWAT plug-in within QGIS platform. With new developed FREEWAT plug-in in project FREEWAT, we made steady-state and transient groundwater model for presenting this shift of the watershed dividing under the city and optimal water management for this area. The model was designed in a way that it identifies and describes all major aspects of the physical hydrogeological system and water management. During the running of a project, there was an accident with heating oil spillage in city area, right on the watershed dividing. So we oriented with the transient groundwater model as well on heating oil spillage and pumping with additional wells at the place of the accident to present successful rehabilitation and the importance of the managed groundwater recharge. Our experience with FREEWAT platform during the Vrbanski Plato aquifer case study was very positive. The connection data of the GIS tool, open license and the database monitoring and model approaches functioned as the right tool for a professional approach and communicating with stakeholders. With groundwater models in FREEWAT platform, we defined optimal condition, with as less as possible the impact of groundwater below the city, for pumping water on the Vrbanski Plato, managed by Water Supply Maribor company and needed optimal level in river Drava managed by Drava Power Plants Company. Quantities of pumping for water supply and level of Drava River are the dominant components of water management in this area. Due to the time and financial constraints, we took into account the period from July 2014 to June 2017.

Anche in questa occasione pubblichiamo contributi rilevanti per la gestione dei sistemi idrologici superficiali e sotterranei, proprio in un periodo dell’anno in cui l’impatto antropico dovuto ai prelievi si fa importante. andando spesso ad alterare sia lo stato quantitativo che lo stato chimico dei corpi idrici sotterranei.

The Geological Survey of Italy, Italian National Institute for Environmental Protection and Research is realizing the Sheet N.348 Antrodoco (Central Italy) of the Hydrogeological map of Italy as a cartographical test of the Italian hydrogeological survey and mapping guidelines, in the frame of the Italian Geological Cartography Project. The study area is characterized by structural units deeply involved in the Apennine Orogeny (Latium and Abruzzi region territory, Rieti and L’Aquila provinces) and including deposits of marine carbonate shelf, slope, basin and foredeep environments hosting relatively large amounts of groundwater resources. The map was realized to obtain the best possible representation of all hydrogeological elements deriving from field surveys, in order to characterize the hydrogeological asset. A control network for monthly measurement of surface and groundwater flow rates and hydrogeochemical parameters was performed. Data were uploaded in a geographic information system to perform the present preliminary hydrogeological cartography consisting in a main map showing the following hydrogeological complexes based on relative permeability degree (from bottom to top): i) calcareous (Jurassic-Cretaceous; high permeability); ii) calcareous-marly (Upper Cretaceous- Middle Eocene; intermediate permeability); iii) marly-calcareous and marly (Upper Eocene- Upper Miocene; low permeability); iv) flysch (Upper Miocene; low permeability); v) conglomeratic-sandy and detritic (Upper Pliocene-Pleistocene; intermediate permeability); vi) alluvial (Quaternary; low permeability). Among other elements shown in the main map there are hydrographical basin and sub-basin boundaries, stream gauging stations, meteo-climatic stations, streamwater-groundwater exchange processes, hydrostructure boundaries, point and linear spring flow rates, groundwater flow directions. Furthermore, complementary smaller-scale sketches at the margin of the main map were realized (e.g., hydrogeological structure map, hydrogeological complex map based on effective infiltration information, hydrogeological crosssections).
