Job description

Graduate Research Assistant Positions starting in Fall 2023 are available at Laboratory of Ambient and Wearable Systems, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering  at the University of Alabama (http://claws.eng.ua.edu). The laboratory is engaged in several research projects covering physiological and behavioral monitoring. The laboratory develops state-of-the-art monitoring solutions and closely collaborates with leading clinical researchers in the areas of nutrition and obesity, rehabilitation, physical activity monitoring, smoking behavior and others. The research pursued in the laboratory has been published in the leading venues (various IEEE transactions, Nature Publishing group, Elsevier, etc.). The work by the faculty and students from the lab won multiple international awards such as Bluetooth Innovation of the Year, TI Analog Design Contest and TI Innovation Contest. PhD graduates from the laboratory are demanded and find employment in academia or well-known companies such as Intel, Medtronics, Roche and others.

Applicants are sought in two tracks:

  1. Edge computing and embedded AI. Proficiency with microcontrollers, preferably ARM Cortex is required. Knowledge of ML/AI is also required.
  2. Image and signal processing. Python/Keras/Pytorch/Open CV proficiency is required. Knowledge of biomedical instrumentation is desired.

The candidate is expected to be a reliable and self-motivated team player, with a degree in Electrical, Computer or Biomedical Engineering. The assistantship covers a yearly stipend, tuition and health insurance. These positions may potentially lead to a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering.
