Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s (ORNL) Particle Fuel Forms (PFF) Group in the Nuclear Fuel Development (NFD) Section within the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division is seeking a technical professional to support chemical synthesis and characterization of uranium compounds and refractory ceramics for nuclear fuel development activities. The PFF group is a global leader for tristructural isotropic (TRISO) coated particle fuel research for high temperature gas-cooled reactors and is focused on driving innovation in coated particle fuel technologies for emerging nuclear technologies (e.g., space nuclear propulsion). This position would support technologies in these areas and beyond. This individual will work closely with research staff to support experimental investigations aimed at optimization of wet chemistry routes to produce actinide compounds and refractory ceramics of controlled composition and structure. Existing infrastructure is tailored to internal gelation processing (sol-gel) to produce actinide oxide microspheres both with and without additives as well as refractory ceramics. The individual selected for this position will be responsible for exercising these capabilities and assist in conducting chemical and structural characterization to support study of the linkages between fabrication route, structure-property relationships, and performance of candidate nuclear fuels and related fuel form materials. The selected individual will be encouraged to engage with staff within the PFF group and NFD section to foster a vibrant research atmosphere to grow capabilities and drive innovation within the group and section.
- Conduct research activities in radiological materials laboratories dedicated for synthesis and characterization of sol-gel microspheres.
- Support generation of data for deliverables (journal publications, reports) to meet sponsor milestones and communicate research outcomes.
- Coordinate research activities and interface with support organization staff external to the group to meet research objectives and establish work controls.
- A B.S. in one of the Physical Sciences, Nuclear Engineering, Chemistry, or a related discipline
- A minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience in a laboratory environment or M.S.
- Experience with wet chemistry techniques
- Experience working with radiological materials
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Evidence of success in independently driven outcomes and through contributions to collaborative teams
- Demonstrated ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
