Seeking to evaluate the impact of the increasing conversion of forest remnants into agricultural areas on the aquatic food chain, the present study investigated land use at multiple spatial scales and its impact on primary producers and primary consumers in a Neotropical floodplain, using δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N in three periods within a 20-year window. Over years of study, an increase in the percentage of agricultural land use in the investigated area was verified. The δ¹⁵N values of primary producers were associated with impacts in the riparian forest and the basin. In contrast, the increase in the δ¹⁵N values of the consumer was related to impacts in the basin. Changes in consumer’s trophic position and isotopic niche reflected the impacts on the reduction in riparian forests in rivers. In contrast, the most conserved area of riparian forest tends to be a barrier to the impacts of land use on the basin, as observed in the river in the protected area. Thus, the conservation of riparian forests is essential for the stability of the trophic structure of aquatic consumers, as it acts as a barrier to impacts on the basin.
We investigate the dynamics of fermion localization within the framework of f(T,B) gravity featuring non-minimal couplings. Starting from the Dirac action for a spin- 1/2 fermion in a five-dimensional spacetime governed by torsional f(T,B) gravity, we derive the Dirac equation and we explore its solutions under various non-minimal coupling functions. We examine two realistic forms of the torsional non-minimal coupling and reveal distinct behaviors that impact the localization of both massless and massive fermionic modes on the brane. Additionally, we employ probabilistic measurements, including Shannon entropy theory, Fisher information theory, and relative probability, to analyze the localization of these fermionic modes. The observed effects offer potential insights into probing torsional modifications.
Migratory fishes are deeply connected with human societies. In the Tocantins-Araguaia basin, a region marked by high biodiversity, endemism and environmental degradation, there is little information about these fishes. In this scenario, the present study investigated taxonomic and functional diversity of potamodromous fishes, with the objective to compile the first species list, and examine patterns in species richness, composition, and functional diversity. The migratory status of each species was assigned based on the most recent literature on fish diversity in the Tocantins-Araguaia and Amazon basins. The study consolidated a list of 77 potamodromous fish species (three orders, 12 families and 41 genera), including eight endemic, three threatened and two non-native species. Pimelodidae summed most species, followed by Serrasalmidae and Curimatidae. Most species were classified as medium (42) and long-distance (32) migrants, with few carrying out continental migrations (3). Most species were widely distributed in the basin, resulting in little spatial variation in species richness, composition and functional diversity. However, trait composition varied among species, families and migratory scale. This is the first broad assessment focused on migratory fishes in this basin, with potential to generate basic information to support fisheries management, environmental planning, and conservation initiatives.
Anthropized areas in the Brazilian Amazon require detailed mapping to identify zones for sustainable use. This study developed a topoclimatic zoning framework to evaluate the conservation and agroforestry potential of three native species: Carapa guianensis (Andiroba), Dipteryx odorata (Cumaru), and Bertholletia excelsa (Amazon Nut). The hypothesis was that integrating topographic and climatic data can effectively identify high-potential areas for these species to support forest restoration and sustainable management. This study applied ecological modeling and Geographic Information System (GIS) tools to classify zones into high, medium, and low potential for each species. Results showed Carapa guianensis has high potential in 64% of anthropized areas, Dipteryx odorata in 72% of the Legal Amazon, and Bertholletia excelsa in 58%, highlighting their adaptability and strategic value for restoration efforts. The findings emphasize the importance of topoclimatic zoning as a tool for conservation and sustainable use strategies. By aligning with Brazil’s Payment for Environmental Services (PES) Law, this approach can foster agroforestry practices, enhance biodiversity conservation, and strengthen the Amazon bioeconomy, ensuring ecological resilience and sustainable development.
Objective Promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors is essential for preventing and managing chronic and mental health conditions. This study aims to present a digital health platform accessible via PC or smartphone, VIVA!, designed to foster lifestyle change among the Brazilian population. It evaluates interest, uptake, acceptability, usability, adherence, and retention over 12 weeks. Methods A fully online feasibility trial was conducted from April to December 2023. Participants were adults who lived in Rio de Janeiro and reported using the Brazilian Public Health System. Interest in VIVA! and uptake were assessed via recruitment metrics. Acceptability and usability were measured using the Mobile App Rating Scale (MARS). Adherence was calculated as the percentage of completed challenges over 12 weeks, and retention was tracked at 4, 8, and 12 weeks. Results Of 3812 individuals reached, 27.2% expressed interest in the app, with an uptake rate of 65.4%. A total of 401 participants were enrolled, predominantly women (73.3%) with higher education (61.6%). MARS acceptability scores were 2.9 for quality and 3.5 for specificity. Usability scores averaged around 3, with aesthetics rated the highest. Retention at 12 weeks was 4.5%, and the average adherence rate was 11.2%. Conclusion The VIVA! attracted women and highly-educated individuals, but its effectiveness was constrained by high attrition. These findings highlight key challenges in DHI implementation, including the need for robust outreach, iterative improvements, and strategies to sustain engagement. Addressing digital access, literacy inequities, and strengthening regulations are critical for the future success and equity of DHIs in public health systems. Trial registration The trial was registered at the Brazilian Clinical Trials Registry (Registro Brasileiro de Ensaios Clínicos -REBEC)—number RBR-2ssyb6q.
The unique environmental characteristics of the tropics and subtropics, including precipitation patterns, photoperiods and temperatures , can influence riverine zooplankton communities in contrasting ways. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the seasonal dynamics of zooplankton in tropical and subtropical rivers and compare the structure of zooplankton in response to distinct climatic conditions. To this end, we collected zooplankton samples from rivers located in two different climatic zones in Brazil (tropical and subtropical) during winter, spring, summer and autumn. Our results showed that testate amoebae and rotifers play a crucial role in zooplankton dynamics in both climatic zones, emerging as the predominant groups regarding density, species richness and diversity. In tropical rivers, seasonal variations in zooplankton are strongly influenced by temperature and flooding events, which affect total suspended solids, turbidity and pH. In subtropical rivers, zooplankton seasonal dynamics are closely linked to fluctuations in temperature and dissolved oxygen. We identified 142 zooplankton taxa, with the tropical zone comprising 125 taxa and the subtropical zone comprising 97 taxa. The results also revealed that tropical rivers had greater species richness and diversity than subtropical rivers. This disparity was primarily attributed to the higher temperatures, greater nutrient concentrations and lower thermal amplitudes in tropical waters compared to those in subtropical waters. Thus, it is evident that different climatic conditions have varying influences on riverine zooplankton dynamics, highlighting the need to consider regional characteristics in the management and conservation of aquatic ecosystems.
Probiotic vegetable-based beverages, such as lychee, can be rich in nutrients, free of cholesterol and lactose, and also have few allergenic components. Saccharomyces boulardii is an alternative to make lychee juice a probiotic beverage. This work aimed to develop probiotic lychee beverage (LB) using S. boulardii by evaluating the effect of refrigerated storage on cell viability, physicochemical characteristics, and acceptance. LB supplemented with S. boulardii was fermented (24 h/30 °C), supplemented with sucrose (4–12 °Brix), and refrigerated (up to 28 days/4 °C). The yeast viability, total soluble solid (TSS) and, ethanol content, pH, total phenolic compounds (TPC), and antioxidant activity (AA) levels were evaluated over 28 days of storage. Also, the profiles of sugars, organic acids, and phenolic were determined via chromatographic analysis. The sensory acceptance of the probiotic beverage was evaluated. Higher sucrose levels (12 °Brix) resulted in greater yeast viability (6.9 log CFU/mL) on the 21st day of storage and superior TPC (153 µmol TEAC/mL) and ethanol levels (8.7%). Storage reduced the TPC, AA, and TSS. LB supplemented with sucrose to 12 °Brix, probioticated by S. boulardii, and stored for 21 days became accepted by the consumer and presented an adequate physicochemical profile with probiotic potential. The probiotication of lychee beverage is an alternative to dairy-based probiotic beverages.

In this text, the concepts of quality and assessment and their interrelations are analyzed through the prescriptions provided by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in the Global Reports on Adult Learning and Education (GRALE) from 2010 to 2022. The primary sources for the analysis are defined by the five UNESCO’s Global Reports on Adult Learning and Education, since they are documents that have as proposition to present a global panorama on the actions undertaken by different countries and, above all, to guide policies and actions for Adult Education. A documentary and bibliographical research was carried out, with a qualitative approach and, based on this delimitation, the concepts of quality and assessment were problematized, as they are important categories present in all Reports, which are linked to the concept of Lifelong Learning. It is concluded that UNESCO has been an inductor of education policies, especially on Adult Education, disseminating a concept of quality from an ahistorical perspective, separated from objective socioeconomic conditions. This perspective also delimits the concept of assessment, linking it to the establishment and expansion of regulation, control and monitoring policies and programs. Such prescriptions are based on the limitation, mainly of formal education, prescribing only the basics and referring to Lifelong Learning arrangements as a principle to be pursued by Governments, civil society, and the private sector.
