... If selfies are about capturing the moment (Georgakopoulou, 2016: 302), or in other words, 'the here and the now' (San Cornelio and Roig, 2018), we may convene that, at an individual level, including a temporal dimension in researching selfies can provide a more comprehensive understanding on what a certain image published in a specific moment means for a user, as other authors have argued elsewhere (Losh, 2015;San Cornelio, 2017). Why an image is worth posting and being shared in a specific time and not afterward or before and how this image articulates with the rest of the personal stream (including not only images but also stories) are two keys to understand the context where the selfie is produced on Instagram. ...
... We performed hashtag-based scrapes for analyzing collective issues, such as emerging gender tags related to selfies (Enguix and Gómez-Narváez, 2018), selfies at cultural events and festivals (San Cornelio and Roig, 2018), or tags used by youngsters going out at night around Barcelona (Ardèvol, 2017). We undertook user-based scrapes for individual researches, such as postmaternity selfies -published by specific users -as a way of fostering debates on current maternity issues (San Cornelio, 2017) or selfies as part of a travelling narrative (Roig, 2017). 6 Methodologically speaking, the time articulation in our research was twofold: in the hashtagbased searches, we privileged simultaneity, and in user-based searches, we privileged longitudinality. ...
... 6 Methodologically speaking, the time articulation in our research was twofold: in the hashtagbased searches, we privileged simultaneity, and in user-based searches, we privileged longitudinality. In this article, we will be focusing on the first, in which we tested our hybrid methodology in the field by examining the use of the selfie in two mass cultural events held in Barcelona in 2016: Primavera Sound music festival and the Barcelona Games World Convention (San Cornelio andRoig, 2018: 2780). In both events, we situated the research team at the venues, conducted interviews, and performed participant observation while, at the same time, we monitored the Instagram activity through the scraper. ...

In this article, we will present our insights on key methodological challenges emerged from the Selfiestories project, focused on selfies as personal narratives on Instagram. In this research, we approached the selfie practice in the context of user’s personal narratives (Georgakopoulou, 2016, From narrating the self to posting self(ies): A small stories approach to selfies. Open Linguistics 2(1): 300–317.) embedded in the everyday. We opted for a mixed methodology (Creswell and Creswell, 2017) resonating on the notion of remix (Markham, 2013, Remix cultures, remix methods: Reframing qualitative inquiry for social media contexts. In: Denzin N and Giardina M (eds) Global Dimensions of Qualitative Inquiry. pp. 63–81.), thus combining fieldwork and ethnographic techniques with quantitative data obtained through an Instagram data extractor. This approach proved to be challenging in the process of establishing a dialogue between data sets of different nature. At this stage, we considered visualization as a valuable technique for analysis and communication, particularly in those case studies where fieldwork and data extraction from Instagram were conducted simultaneously. Decisions made regarding visualization processes posed different challenges regarding the intermingling of qualitative and quantitative data and the layout of our results. After a contextualization of our research and methodology, we will analyze the challenges and limitations of visualizations in our research. Taking into account the time-based dimension of personal narratives in Instagram, emphasized in some of our case studies, such as events, we will document our own process in looking for the best possible ways to present a more balanced account of our synchronous qualitative and quantitative data. We will do so against the temporal background of the experience of the first day of the Primavera Sound 2016, where we conducted fieldwork while extracting data from Instagram. After carrying out different tests with alternative visualization tools and formats, we chose to work with timeline tools, particularly those who offered a narrative layout against the backdrop of experience time. In a research where time and synchrony play a pivotal role, we suggest that adding a temporal dimension in visualization could be a way of connecting both perspectives, thus allowing to present different sources and types of data together, while also expanding the role that storytelling can play in visualizing data.

In social networks such as Instagram, many mothers present themselves together with their children („sharenting“). The present study investigates how this (self-) presentation takes place and which visual messages play a role in it. Using visual analysis, we compared pictures of German- and French-language Instagram posts. It turns out that both national contexts are dominated by images that can be interpreted as visualizations of intensive motherhood. The visual analysis brings out the intimate connection between the mothers and their children, and at the same time a professional understanding of motherhood. Despite different national traditions and frameworks of motherhood in France and Germany, there are great similarities in the visual representation of mothers on Instagram. This finding suggests that the growing use of social media may be accompanied by an internationalization of social and visual norms.

The phenomenon called sexting, involves the virtual exchange of images or own sexual videos. It is associated with various problems, such as risky sexual behavior and cyberbullying. It is also considered as a regular virtual photo sharing between adolescents. Sexting is being investigated in young people due to the increase in exposure and the risks that this implies. But there are few studies in younger adolescents. Goals: to explore the performance of sexting in adolescents from Mendoza and the features of the phenomenon according to age, gender and sentimental state of the adolescents. Sample: 283 adolescents from 13 to 18 years old, students from public secondary schools. Results showed that the frequency of sending their own sexual photos or videos ranges between 25% and 38%. In the analysis by age, older adolescents (17 and 18 years old) review more frequently when sending their own photos or videos and the di- fference with the other age groups was significant. The same difference is recorded in the uploading of this material to the Internet. In the comparison by gender, women showed a higher percent in the action of sharing their own photos or videos and the difference with men was significant.

This paper focuses on an analysis of the narratives present in a set of eight Instagram accounts devoted to sharing information on maternity in the Spanish context. In a qualitative approach that uses participant observation and content analysis (5184 posts), the main objective is to identify the narratives 1 surrounding maternity and to elaborate their relationship with feminist discourses, thus comparing them with previous and current conceptions and representations of motherhood in media. A second aim is to understand the role of information and expertise in these spaces. The results reveal three approaches: affirmative and child-centred narratives, feminist counter-narratives, and discourses on professionalization and authoritative knowledge.

Debates on motherhood have proliferated on social media, especially in Brazil. Through personal narratives , different women share their motherhood experiences online, creating support, negotiation and conflict networks. The paper aims to study: which values are disputed through these narratives ; in which ways does the use of social media make the problematization of motherhood visible; and how personal narratives integrate the dialogi-cal environment of digital culture. The corpus consists of nine Brazilian posts-three on fanpages on Facebook, three on personal profiles on the same site, and three blogs about motherhood-along with their comments. The methodology applied relies on Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis (CMDA). Online discussions about motherhood disclose a potential of propagation, generated by par-ticipants' discursive performances.
