Phytochemical investigation of the hexane extract of the aerial parts of Acritopappus micropappus (Asteraceae) led to the isolation of two sesquiterpenes (1 and 2), four triterpenes (3-6), two steroids (7 and 8) and one lignan (9). The essential oils of the aerial parts of A. micropappus collected at three different locations were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry allowing the identification of six monoterpenes (10-15), 24 sesquiterpenes (16-39), and one aliphatic ketone (40). This is the first report of compounds 1, 2, 9, 20, and 34 in the Asteraceae family, whereas this is the first report of compounds 3-8, 13, 15-17, 22, 24-27, 29-33, 35, 36, 38-40 in the genus Acritopappus. Compounds 10-12, 14, 18, 19, 21, 23, 28, and 37 have been described in other Acritopappus species, but this is the first report in A. micropappus. The chemophenetics significance of these compounds is described herein.

Asteraceae is the family with the highest species number in the rocky fields (campos rupestres) of the Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil. On the basis of several collections from this area, we are proposing a new genus of Asteraceae based on morphology and phylogeny, to accommodate a species newly described here. Lapidia apicifolia is a loosely ramified shrub 2–4 from ITS and trnL-trnF of selected members of Eupatorieae, Lapidia is indicated as sister group of a highly supported clade with Morithamnus, Bahianthus and Catolesia. This group is composed by loosely branched shrubs, most with leaves that are lax, stems, leaves and involucral bracts that are viscid (Bahianthus and Morithamnus) and, if not, trichomes (tomentose indumentum) are developed (Lapidia), to protect against both solar radiation and loss of water. A description, illustrations, and a discussion about related and sympatric genera are presented.

The Espinhaço range is a mountain chain that extends from the municipality of Ouro Preto in Minas Gerais to the Chapada Diamantina region in Bahia, eastern Brazil. The Serra Geral of Licínio de Almeida (SGLA) is located in the Espinhaço Septentrional in southwestern Bahia, and its biodiversity is still poorly known. In order to contribute to a better understanding of floristic diversity and the vegetation of SGLA, we have compiled a checklist of its flowering plants and characterized the phyto-physiognomy of the different plant formations. A total of 811 species in 410 genera and 97 families are recorded in our study. Based on floristic composition and ecological parameters, we recognize five plant formations as follows: (1) deciduous forest, (2) semi-deciduous forest, (3) “Cerrado” s.str., (4) rocky fields (“Campos Rupestres”), and (5) rocky Caatinga (“Caatinga Rupestre”). Our results indicate that the SGLA is a transitional area between the “Cerrado” and “Caatinga” domains and constitutes an ecological corridor that links the northern and southern portions of the Espinhaço Range supported by 24 new occurrences recorded for the state of Bahia.

Vernonia missurica Raf. (Compositae: Vernonieae: Vernoniinae) is described and illustrated, a full synonymy provided, the location of known type material provided, and its taxonomic position discussed; a selected iconography is indicated. The cultivation, propagation, pests and diseases and availability of the species are commented on. The complexity of the tribe Vernonieae in a global context is discussed and compared with that of the Eupatorieae. Vernonia Schreb. sensu stricto is considered by some to be restricted to North America and Mexico, with two disjunct species in South America. The infrageneric classification of Vernonia s.s. is commented on, although it is clearly appropriate to regard any formal classification as work in progress as historical attempts are a nomenclatural issue still to be resolved, if needed. The etymology of the generic names Vernonia and Vernoniopsis is introduced and then discussed at length. Vernoniopsis Dusén (Vernonieae), described following anatomical work on xylopodia, is considered to be congeneric with Pycnocephalum (Less.) DC. (Vernonieae). Dusén's name, once highlighted, has subsequently been added to Index Nominum Genericorum , although incorrect assumptions have been made in the Plants of the World Online record, and still have to be updated. A revised generic synonymy of Pycnocephalum and that of Pycnocephalum plantaginifolium (Less.) DC. is provided; the types of all heterotypic synonyms is stated, along with the location of known type material. The later homonym, Vernoniopsis Humbert (currently in the Astereae: Madagasterinae), thus requiring a replacement name, is given the name Jalantzia , and the appropriate new combinations, Jalantzia caudata and J. lokohensis , are made.

The campo rupestre in the Espinhaço Range is subject of many floristic studies due to its high rates of species diversity and endemism. These studies are made up of critical, easily accessible data about local richness and biodiversity, which are essential for subsidizing new studies in the fields of conservation, ecology, and systematics. This study describes the results of a survey of floristic studies carried out in the Espinhaço Range and provides a checklist of the plant species listed in them. We found that 294 floristic studies were conducted in the Espinhaço Range, but they were focused only on a few areas. Likewise, we detected sampling gaps in some areas. The Floras studied provide information on 3,191 plants or 6,3% Brazilian flora, of which 2,879 are angiosperms, 247 bryophytes, and 65 lycophytes and ferns. Finally, we observed a lack of standardization regarding the habits reported for angiosperms shrubs and subshrubs which is more problematic for Espinhaço’s flora because of its grasslands or shrublands vegetation. Thereby, we reaffirm the importance and need to encourage new floristic studies in the Espinhaço Range as a means to train new taxonomists and to provide new studies and projects. The systematic treatment of Eupatorieae tribe (Asteraceae) in the Caparaó National Park, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Brazil, was carried out. Identification key, descriptions, taxonomic comments, flowering and fruiting data, illustrations and conservation status were provided for the species. In total, 35 species from 16 genera and 11 subtribes were surveyed, highlighting the great richness of this tribe in forest formation and mountain higlands in this national park. The most diverse genus is Mikania (14 spp.), followed by Chromolaena (four spp). The other genera are represented by either one or two species each. Twenty-one species are exclusive to Brazil and four species are restricted for the Atlantic Forest. Three species are new occurrence from Minas Gerais, meanwhile nine species are new record from Espírito Santo and five new occurrence for the Atlantic Forest biome. Symphyopappus myricifolius is an endemic species for the Caparaó National Park mountain highlands, and M. additicia is an endangered species.
