Bembidion (Peryphanes) sanatum iwanai ssp. n. is described from the solfatara fields of the Mendeleev Volcano (Kuril Archipelago: Kunashir Island). It slightly differs from the nominative subspecies by body proportions, as well as the relatively narrow external intervals of the elytra and their microsculpture, yet showing stable distinctions in endophallus armature (basal part of lamina 1 is rounded, vs. angular in the nominative sub-species) and in the spermatheca duct (5-6 convolutions, vs. 7-8 in the nominative subspecies). Endemism of insects on the island's large volcanic massifs of Kunashir Island is discussed.

In this study, we examined members of the ground-beetle genus Bembidion Latreille, 1802 from northern Iran using a combination of COI sequences and morphological data. A total number of 29 specimens belonging to 12 species of the genus Bembidion and one species of the genus Trechus from the Alborz Mountains were collected and analysed. 107 sequences from NCBI Genbank were added for molecular analysis. Our results confirm a high efficiency of DNA barcodes to resolve species of the genus. A clear barcoding gap, allowing a robust identification of the analysed species, was observed. Based on our results we propose species status for Bembidion haupti Reitter, 1908, formerly ranked as subspecies of Bembidion dalmatinum Dejean, 1831. This study represents the first effort generating DNA sequence data for members of the genus Bembidion in Iran and is a starting point for more local barcoding studies in the high-diversity regions of Iran.

Five species of ground beetles are permanent inhabitants of the fumarola fields on Kunashir Island: Cicindela (Cicindela) sachalinensis A. Morawitz, 1862; Cylindera (Eugrapha) elisae (Mots-chulsky, 1859); Bembidion (Ocydromus) dolorosum (Motschulsky, 1860); B. (Peryphanes) sana-tum Bates, 1883, and Poecilus (Poecilus) samurai (Lutshnik, 1916). These species respond differently to extreme conditions. In some species, the size is decreased (C. elisae, B. dolorosum), but is increased in P. samurai; in B. dolorosum, the pigmentation is decreased, while increased in others (C. sachalinensis, C. elisae, P. samurai). The degree of these variations depends neither on taxonomic relations nor the adaptation time. The areas of moderate thermal activity of Kunashir volcanoes could have served as refugia during the colder climatic periods. Based on data on the variability and barcoding of B. dolorosum, the following new synonymy is established: Bembidion (Ocydromus) dolorosum (Motschulsky, 1860) = Bembidion (Ocydro-mus) negrei Habu, 1958, syn. nov. = Bembidion (Peryphus) kuznetsovi Lafer, 2002, syn. nov.

The paper presents some results of field explorations on the ground beetles (Carabidae) carried out in 2008–2015 on Kunashir Island, the southernmost of the Great Kurile Archipelago. Our review concerns previously unpublished, scarce or dubious taxa in the island’s fauna. Of the 70 taxa listed in the paper, 4 species and 1 subspecies are recorded in Russia for the first time, 26 are new to the entire Kurile Archipelago, 1 is new to the Great Kuriles, and 8 are new to Kunashir. A new synonym (Acupalpus inouyei Habu, 1980 = A. storozhenkoi Lafer, 1989, syn.n.) and a new combination (Nebria shibanai shiretokoana Nakane, 1960, stat. rest.) are established.
