Although effective risk management is highly dependent on risk perception and communication, limited attention has been given to the influence and consideration of these two constructs and their factors in the aviation industry. This research aimed to map practices and perspectives of safety investigators regarding risk perception and communication in aviation and reveal respective influential parameters. The interviews with ten experienced safety investigators revealed that they consider and search risk perception and communication factors but with a divergent emphasis. Investigators acknowledged the effects of emotional and cognitive biases as well as the role of context when examining risk perception and communication factors and attributed the shaping of the latter to organisational practices, mainly training, supervisory and cultural aspects. Overall, the findings of this study suggest investigation methods could be enriched with a systematic approach to examining the role of risk perception and communication and considering their shaping factors while also providing directions for abating subjectivity when addressing these two constructs. This could be facilitated by developing a common reference framework for risk perception and communication and be accompanied by support from specialists and training in the management of investigators’ heuristics.

In the flight training environment, Certified Flight Instructors (CFI) experience inconsistent schedules, long hours at the airport, and limited organizational support in their roles. These factors can contribute to fatigue and burnout which can also impact Flight Students. This study explores such experiences of CFIs and flight students through semi structured focus groups across three collegiate flight schools. Analysis of these focus group transcripts revealed five themes: organizational issues, financial pressures, fatigue, burnout, and training effectiveness. Our findings identified how systemic stressors, like rigid scheduling, financial stress, and lack of career infrastructure, degrade the CFIs’ wellbeing which leads to compromised training quality and flight safety. Flight students also observed signs of the CFIs’ fatigue and lapses in instruction. To mitigate such detrimental spiraling effects, we suggest interventions including scheduling flexibility, revising pay scale, compensation structures, and career development pathways, to better support CFI wellbeing and enhance the overall quality and safety of flight training.

The presence (or lack thereof) of women in STEM and ICT has become a key issue for the industry and for policy makers, as complex and nuanced questions of gender are brought to the centerstage of public discussion. As part of this effort, this research aims to shine a light on the factors that keep girls and young women from pursuing careers in the field of ICT and provide tools and orientations to tackle these issues. A two-fold analysis was conducted, with interviews with experts in the sector, in the format of four round-table discussions, and an analysis of 30 case studies of projects/initiatives across four countries: Lithuania, Greece, Slovenia and Portugal. The collected insights point to the persistence of gendered stereotypes, as well as prevailing misconceptions on the nature of ICT work. Furthermore, it points to the importance of teachers and educators, as well as the visibility of female role models in the industry. Nowadays, aviation pilots often use tablets or mobile devices to perform and help navigation flights. This becomes an issue when ab-initio pilots start to use Electronic Flight Bags (EFB) without any proper training during flight school. Some EFB are available to pilots on digital stores who can buy and install this software. Some available products are Foreflight, Garmin Pilot, and Skydemon, among others, often used for visual or instrument navigations. Using these devices in aircrafts with analog instruments can divert the pilot’s attention from flying the aircraft to being focused on changing settings with a head-down attitude and losing situational awareness from the remaining flight instruments.This article reviews the current body of literature in this area and analyses the accident data of one of the most important databases in accident investigation in aviation. Some findings point to the key insights affecting Situational Awareness and human-machine interaction on pilots using EFB.

The research primarily seeks to understand how supervisor support can directly and indirectly enhance the service innovative behavior (SIB) of flight attendants via work engagement. Moreover, although there has been some research on the effect of group diversity on organizational performance, the results have not been consistent. Thus, this study addresses this gap by investigating how work group diversity can make variance in the relationship between work engagement and innovative behavior of flight attendants. The sample size of 242 flight attendants working at the central airport in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, has been taken for the study. To test hypotheses, structural equation modeling and bootstrapping were employed. This study provided an evidence for the positive nexus between perceived supervisor support and SIB. Additionally, the results shed light on a mediation mechanism of work engagement for the association between flight attendants’ perception of their supervisor and innovative behavior. Furthermore, tenure diversity and job position diversity in a work group were proved to play a moderating role in the relationship between work engagement and service innovative behavior. Specifically, flight attendants are more willing to exhibit innovative behaviors when working in a homogeneous group in terms of tenure and job position rather than in a heterogeneous group. The empirical results contributed to the diversity management literature and broadened the understanding of how to activate the service innovative behavior of employees. From a managerial perspective, managers should pay attention to the characteristics of employees when organizing teamwork.
