Modern manufacturing means, 5-axis machining in particular, are now applied to propellers since they allow free forms to be obtained. They also allow a very smooth finish while maintaining geometrical accuracy that hand-driven finishing cannot assure. Propellers manufacturers tend to propose blades of great surface finish, even mirror-polished to e...

... example of an unfiltered signal is shown on figure 2. Then, form and waviness were removed to obtain the roughness profiles ( figure 3) before analysis. Since the lay is the most influent parameter on the surface irregularities of hydrofoils we will focus our study on the roughness of the profiles. ...

... Power Spectral Density (PSD) analysis has also been carried out on the hydrofoils roughness signal after form and waviness removal ( figure 3). The PSD shows the peak wavelength value Wl = 0.487 mm, with its corresponding amplitude A = 0.91 µm. ...

To guarantee the deposition of sensors on functional surfaces, a reliable thin insulation layer is required. Within this paper, the results of the investigation of a capable insulation layer are presented. Challenges occurring during the manufacturing process will be discussed. A focus is set on parameters that influence the breakdown field strengt...

Performances of propellers are linked with their shape and texture surface characteristics. A mirror surface is considered an excessive quality as an additional manufacturing cost is required. This paper presents a study of a compromise between the compliance with hydrodynamic performances and manufacturing costs. Due to the machining paths, a model linking the finish of the surface to the hydrodynamic performances is studied.Three hydrofoils are machined with different roughness. Roughness peaks are parallel to the flow. Hydrofoils are machined and tested in the hydrodynamic tunnel, then the influence of the finish of the surface on the hydrodynamic performances and cavitation is analyzed.
