ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of diet supplementation with different amounts of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) meal on broiler chicken growth performance and carcass characteristics. We used a completely randomized design (CRD) to assign one hundred and twenty-eight 2-week-old chicks to four dietary treatment groups, each with four replicates of eight chicks. The treatment groups were fed a base diet supplemented with lemongrass meal at concentrations of 0% (control), 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5%. Giving lemongrass meal at all levels (0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5%) resulted in significant increases in body weight gain, average daily gain, and final body weight (P<0.05) compared to the control group. In contrast, there were no significant changes in the dietary treatment groups in terms of feed intake, feed conversion ratio, or mortality rate (P>0.05). Dietary treatments did not affect on most carcass characteristics (P>0.05), except supplemented with lemongrass meal at 1.0 and 1.5% resulted in a significant decrease in wings percentage (P<0.05) compared to the control group. In conclusion, adding 0.5% lemongrass meal into the diet appears to improve body weight gain, average daily gain, and final body weight without adversely affecting broiler chicken carcass characteristics.

This study was conducted in order to evaluate the phenolic content, antioxidant activity and nutrient composition of two medicinal teas formulated from pawpaw, moringa, green tea, soursop and lemon grass leaves. The leaves were harvested fresh, dried in the oven to constant weight at 45 °C ground and used to formulate two different teas. A part of each formula was used for the extraction of bioactives by hot infusion in water or using ethanol or methanol as extraction solvents. The obtained extracts were characterized for their total phenolic content and antioxidant activities. The remaining parts of each tea were used for the determination of the proximate and mineral composition. Results showed that the water infusion, ethanolic and methanolic extracts from formula 1 (F1) were the best in total phenolic content compared to the same extracts from formula 2 (F1). Almost all samples exhibited good radical scavenging activities while the best ferric reducing antioxidant power was obtained with the ethanolic extracts from both formulae. The methanolic extracts of both formulae presented the best hy-droxyl radical scavenging activities, followed by the ethanolic extract of formula 1. The analysis of the proximate composition showed that both F1 and F2 have interesting nutritional properties, but F2 was best in mineral composition. The present study shows that F1 can be suitably used for health related issues due to its high phenolic content while both Formulae 1 and 2 can be recommended for persons with nutritional deficiencies due to their interesting nutrient and mineral content.

Lemongrass (genus Cymbopogon) is commonly used in foods, beverages, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and material science. Cymbopogon ambiguus A. Camus, the Australian Native Lemongrass, is a lesser-known member of the genus Cymbopogon, and research on this plant is scarce. Australian Indigenous people use the stalks and leaves of C. ambiguus as teas. Dried chopped leaves are also used as herbs in cooking. The aim of this study was to determine the proximate composition and bioactive properties of Australian native lemongrass (C. ambiguus). Antimicrobial capacity was carried out using the well diffusion method, antioxidant capacity by the FRAP method, and antidiabetic capacity by using the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity assay. The results obtained in the current study were compared with previously published literature on lemongrass (C. citratus). The results showed that C. ambiguus has lower fat and protein content and lower antioxidant and antimicrobial capacities than C. citratus, but it is very rich in fibre (67.55%) and has strong α-glucosidase inhibitory capacity. The total phenolic and total flavonoid content determined in the aqueous extract of C. ambiguus are also notable. The results of the present study showed that Australian native lemongrass has promising bioactive potential to be used as an alternative native herbal tea.

The insufficient intake of fruits and vegetables in diets is identified as a modifiable health risk, emphasizing the need to promote their increased consumption for their health benefits. This study explores the antioxidant potential of tea blends incorporating pineapple peels, ginger, and lemongrass at the ratios of (2:0.1:0.1), (2.0:0.25:0.25), and (2.0:0.5:0.5) respectively. Material and methods used for this study detail the sample collection and preparation process, focusing on the antioxidant assays to include DPPH, total flavonoid, and vitamin C estimation. Results show variations in antioxidant activity, flavonoid, sugar, and vitamin C contents among pineapple peels, ginger, lemon grass and their blends with the tea blend ratio of 2.0:0.1:0.1 having the highest antioxidant activity. The subsequent investigation into composite tea blends demonstrates how different ingredient ratios influence the antioxidant, flavonoid, sugar, and vitamin C content in the final product. The findings underscore the potential of these blends as functional beverages with varying health benefits suggestive for those monitoring their sugar intake and stress levels. Hence, the study is able to address the critical role antioxidants from these materials can play in combating oxidative stress, a contributor to various diseases.

Greenhouse gas emissions from Ethiopian agriculture are significantly increasing, with the largest share is from enteric fermentation and manure left on pasture. An investigation was conducted to evaluate the anti-nutrient composition and effect of commonly used medicinal plant extracts on enteric methane emission from fibrous feeds using maize stover as substrate feed. Total phenols, flavonoid, tannin and essential oil contents were analyzed using established standards. Effects of leaf extracts of Acacia nilotica, Azadirachta indica, three varieties of Cymbopogon citratus (Cymbopogon citratus-I, Cymbopogon citratus java and Cymbopogon citratus upper awash), Leucaena leucocephala, Moringa stenopetala, three varieties of Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosmarinus officinalis I, Rosmarinus officinalis II and Rosmarinus officinalis III) and Thyme schimperi, seed of three Coriandrum sativum varieties (Coriandrum sativum Batu, Coriandrum sativum Tulu and Coriandrum sativum Waltai) and root of Echinops kebericho on total gas production, digestibility and methane production of maize stover were investigated at different doses using the standard procedures. The results indicated that leaf extracts of Acacia nilotica had the highest (P < 0.001) total phenolic and total tannin contents. Compared to other evaluated plant species, all varieties of Cymbopogon citratus had the highest (P < 0.001) flavonoid content. Significantly high (P < 0.001) essential oil content was observed in Rosmarinus officinalis II than other varieties of Rosmarinus officinalis and other plant species. Significant reduction (P < 0.001) of methane production was observed with extracts of Cymbopoon citratus java (22.5 % less methane than the control) and thyme schimperi (16.7 % less methane than the control) at dose of 50 mg/kg DM. There was also significant (P < 0.001) interaction effect between plant species and dose rates at 50 mg/kg DM for both plant species. It can be concluded that the use of 50 mg/kg DM of Cymbopoon citratus java and Thyme schimperi extract to maize stover reduced methane production without negatively affecting feed digestibility. Further studies are necessary to examine the storability of the extracts in different time durations and evaluate their effects in vivo with animals.

It is acclaimed by traditional users to be a potent anti-inflammatory herb. Current study was designed to investigate the nutritional values of Culcasia scandens to rule out the possible therapeutic effects of the herb. The study was carried out by employing spectrophotometric methods for determining the overall nutritional content of the herb. The result of proximate analysis showed that the Culcasia scaudens had high levels of dry matter (91.17±0.01), carbohydrate (45.89±0.02), crude protein (21.71±0.01) and crude fibre 10.97±0.01 with relative low percentage of lipid (2.74±0.00), moisture (8.83±0.01). The result also recorded high levels of retinol (184.00±0.00), niacin (54.00) and folic acid (28.40±0.00) with low levels of ascorbic acid (0.08±0.01), thiamin (0.24±0.00), riboflavin (0.66±0.00) and tocopherol (1.03±0.00). The higher amounts of the proximate contents and vitamins indicated that besides the leaves are being used as traditional medicinal, this herb can serve as good source of nutrients to human as well.

Phytochemical quality and quantity; and minerals varied in plants with respect to seasons. This study investigates the level of the secondary metabolites and minerals in Cymbopogon citratus and Moringa oleifera in dry and wet season. Phytochemical and minerals screening revealed the presence of phenolics, flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, glycosides and K, Ca, Na, Fe, Zn respectively in both Cymbopogon citratus and Moringa oleifera. Moringa oleifera show higher quantity of phytochemicals compare to that of Cymbopogon citratus in both wet and dry seasons. Phytochemical content detected in both Cymbopogon citratus and Moringa oleifera samples follow this order: Cymbopogon citratus; Phenolics>Flavonoids>Alkaloids>Tannins>Glycosides, Moringa oleifera; Phenolics>Flavonoids>Alkaloids>Tannins>Glycosides and mineral contents in both Cymbopogon citratus and Moringa oleifera are in the increasing order: K>Ca>Na>Fe>Zn. The amount of phytochemicals and minerals in Cymbopogon citratus and Moringa oleifera are slightly higher during wet season.

Objective The menace of antibacterial resistance among enteropathogenic bacteria continues to raise therapeutic management concerns within public health system. As a strategy toward alternative control of resistant pathogen proliferation, a folkloric plant (green tea leaves: Camellia sinensis) was collected from Ishaka municipality and characterized for biomolecular components and antibacterial potency. Methods The bioactive and biomolecular components of the plant’s ethanol extract were characterized using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. A preliminary in vitro susceptibility test of the extract against characterized multiple antibiotic-resistant potential diarrheagenic bacterial strains was done. Results The result revealed an exponential increase in susceptibility with a distinctive unit component of the C. sinensis extract at concentrations of 60 and 80 μg/ml. The extract also possessed antibacterial and antioxidant activities while having phytochemical constituents (flavonoids, alkaloids, phenolics, saponin, cardiac glycosides, etc.). The gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis further affirmed the potential of the extract by revealing 52 bioactive components/compounds as shown in the chromatogram. Conclusion The C. sinensis has antimicrobial and antioxidant potentials, and the constituents of the plant might be of therapeutic importance in the management of various diseases, especially those related to Escherichia coli and Salmonella.

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citrates) plant leaves contained appreciable amounts of phytochemicals (alkaloids, glucosides, phenols, saponins, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids and resins), absence of steroids. Chemicals contents of Lemongrass leaves (Moisture, ash, fat, fiber, protein and carbohydrate) were (71.3, 2.41, 0.76, 11.89, 7.21and 6.43) % respectively. Lemongrass leaves were extracted by water, ethanol and hexane extraction. Antibacterial activity of Lemongrass leaves extracts were tested by agar well diffusion against gram positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus and Micrococcus spp.) and gram negative bacteria (Pseudomonas spp. ,Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium). Aqueous extracts exhibited the best activity against tested microorganisms then ethanolic and hexane extracts.The highest inhibition zone of aqueous extract against Satphylococcus aureus was (28 mm), while the lowest against Pseudomonas spp. was (19mm). Ethanolic extract of C.citratus registered (20mm) of inhibition zone against Satphylococcus aureus while the lowest was (15mm) against Salmonella typhimurium. Where Micrococcus sp. and Satphylococcus aureus scored (22mm) were more sensitive while Salmonella typhimurium rigesered (14mm) was highly resistant to hexane extract .The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of extracts were ranged from (˂10 to ˃80) mg/ml, while the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) ranged from (˂30 to ˂100) mg/ml.
