Salt stress is a severe type of environmental stress. It adversely affects agricultural production worldwide. The overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is the most frequent phenomenon during salt stress. ROS are extremely reactive and, in high amounts, noxious, leading to destructive processes and causing cellular damage. However, at lower concentrations, ROS function as secondary messengers, playing a critical role as signaling molecules, ensuring regulation of growth and adjustment to multifactorial stresses. Plants contain several enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants that can detoxify ROS. The production of ROS and their scavenging are important aspects of the plant’s normal response to adverse conditions. Recently, this field has attracted immense attention from plant scientists; however, ROS-induced signaling pathways during salt stress remain largely unknown. In this review, we will discuss the critical role of different antioxidants in salt stress tolerance. We also summarize the recent advances on the detrimental effects of ROS, on the antioxidant machinery scavenging ROS under salt stress, and on the crosstalk between ROS and other various signaling molecules, including nitric oxide, hydrogen sulfide, calcium, and phytohormones. Moreover, the utilization of “-omic” approaches to improve the ROS-regulating antioxidant system during the adaptation process to salt stress is also described.

Based on the origin, we can classify different types of stress. Environmental factors, such as high light intensity, adverse temperature, drought, or soil salinity, are summarized as abiotic stresses and discriminated from biotic stresses that are exerted by pathogens and herbivores, for instance. It was an unexpected observation that overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a common response to all kinds of stress investigated so far. With respect to applied aspects in agriculture and crop breeding, this observation allows using ROS production as a measure to rank the stress perception of individual plants. ROS are important messengers in cell signaling, but exceeding a concentration threshold causes damage. This requires fine-tuning of ROS production and degradation rates. In general, there are two options to control cellular ROS levels, (I) ROS scavenging at the expense of antioxidant consumption and (II) enzyme-controlled degradation of ROS. As antioxidants are limited in quantity, the first strategy only allows temporarily buffering of a certain cellular ROS level. This way, it prevents spells of eventually damaging ROS concentrations. In this review, we focus on the second strategy. We discuss how enzyme-controlled degradation of ROS integrates into plant metabolism. Enzyme activities can be continuously operative. Cellular homeostasis can be achieved by regulation of respective gene expression and subsequent regulation of the enzyme activities. A better understanding of this interplay allows for identifying traits for stress tolerance breeding of crops. As a side effect, the result also may be used to identify cultivation methods modifying crop metabolism, thus resulting in special crop quality.

This study aims to find characteristics that might explain the rapid softening disorder in papaya. At the time of harvest, it was observed that papaya with early softening disorder (ESD) and those without the disorder could not be distinguished exclusively on the basis of their skin color and pulp firmness. Fruit with ESD and without ESD were harvested at maturity stage 1 and evaluated for 10 d at 10 °C, according to the softening index (SI) methodology. The symptoms of early softening disorder were clearly observed between 2 d and 8 d of storage, with firmness 71% lower than the initial firmness, presenting atypical behavior for fruit stored under refrigeration. There was no difference between the fruit with and without ESD for soluble solids contents, but titratable acidity and ascorbic acid were significantly different between both stages of fruit that could be associated with the ripening patterns. Furthermore, there were no differences between fruit with ESD and those without ESD in respiratory rate and ethylene production under refrigerated storage, what suggested that the occurrence of disorder was not related to an increase in ethylene post-harvest period. This work provided evidence to discriminate fruit susceptible to suffer from ESD from those not susceptible to this disorder. The cell wall polysaccharide fractions indicated significant differences between fruit with ESD and without ESD at the moment of harvest suggesting modifications in the cellulose-hemicellulose domain. Moreover, the ethylene production did not follow cell wall modification, suggesting that changes in the cell wall structure could have happened during fruit growth. In this way, depending on the intensity of the cell wall modification, the fruit will exhibit the flesh early softening after harvest.

Beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) is one of the horticultural products that have the potential for development in Indonesia. beetroot contains a high level of betalain and vitamin C, so it can be an antioxidant for cancer. But nowadays, post-harvest handling is not specially noticed by people yet. The aims of this research were to determine the effect of beeswax coating on shelf life and quality of the beetroot and determine the best wax emulsion concentration as beetroot coating. This research was conducted at the Posharvesting Handling Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture and Business, Satya Wacana Christian University, Salatiga. The method used Randomized Block Design with 4 treatments and 6 replications. The concentration of beeswax emulsions used in this research is about 4%, 8%, and 12%. The observed parameter was weight loss, respiration, total dissolved solids, water content, and vitamin C. The results show that the treatment with a concentration of 12% of beeswax emulsion is the best result when compared with other treatments. The result also shows the concentration of 12% beeswax emulsion can maintain the storage time and quality of the beetroot.

Chili peppers represent a very important horticultural crop that is cultivated and commercialized worldwide. The ripening process makes the fruit palatable, desirable, and attractive, thus increasing its quality and nutritional value. This process includes visual changes, such as fruit coloration, flavor, aroma, and texture. Fruit ripening involves a sequence of physiological, biochemical, and molecular changes that must be finely regulated at the transcriptional level. In this review, we integrate current knowledge about the transcription factors involved in the regulation of different stages of the chili pepper ripening process.

Invasive plant species (IAS), with their numerous negative ecological, health, and economic impacts, represent one of the greatest conservation challenges in the world. Reducing the negative impacts and potentially exploiting the biomass of these plant species can significantly contribute to sustainable management, protect biodiversity, and create a healthy environment. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritional potential, phytochemical status, and antioxidant capacity of nine alien invasive plant species: Abutilon theophrasti, Amaranthus retroflexus, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Datura stramonium, Erigeron annuus, Galinsoga ciliata, Reynoutria japonica, Solidago gigantea, and Sorghum halepense. Multivariate statistical methods such as cluster and PCA were performed to determine possible connections and correlations among selected IAS depending on the phytochemical content. According to the obtained results, R. japonica was notable with the highest content of vitamin C (38.46 mg/100 g FW); while E. annuus (1365.92 mg GAE/100 g FW) showed the highest values of total polyphenolic compounds. A. retroflexus was characterized by the highest content of total chlorophylls (0.26 mg/g) and antioxidant capacity (2221.97 µmol TE/kg). Therefore, it can be concluded that the selected IAS represent nutrient-rich plant material with significant potential for the recovering of bioactive compounds.

Biosynthesis of l -ascorbate (AsA) in plants is carried out by a complex metabolic network, which involves d -mannose/ l -galactose, d -galacturonate, l -gulose, and myo -inositol as main precursors. Arabidopsis lines over-expressing enzymes in the myo -inositol pathway have elevated AsA, accumulate more biomass of both aerial and root tissues, and are tolerant to abiotic stresses as shown by manual and digital phenotyping. We crossed myo -inositol oxygenase ( MIOX4 ) over-expressers with two low-vitamin C mutants ( vtc 1-1 and vtc 2-1) encoding enzymes involved in d -mannose/ l -galactose route. The purpose of developing these crosses was to test MIOX4’s ability to restore the low AsA phenotype in mutants, and to assess the contribution of individual biosynthetic pathways to abiotic stress tolerance. We used a powerful high-throughput phenotyping platform for detailed phenotypic characterization of the Arabidopsis crosses with visible, fluorescence, near-infrared and infrared sensors. We combined digital phenotyping with photosynthetic parameters and soil water potential measurements. Our results show that MIOX4 is able to restore the AsA content of the mutants and the restored lines (vtc+MIOX4) show high AsA, enhanced growth rate, accumulate more biomass, and display healthier chlorophyll fluorescence and water content profiles compared to controls. Highlights Constitutive expression of a myo -inositol oxygenase restored vitamin C deficient ( vtc mutants). The restored lines have elevated ascorbate content and are tolerant to abiotic stresses. Under normal and abiotic stress conditions, the restored lines have enhanced biomass and increased water retention.

The inoculation of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), increasing the rhizospheric influence, might provide higher levels of bioactive compounds. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the influence of the AMF inoculation on the physicochemical components of fruit’s quality in field. Strawberry fruits from cultivars Camarosa, Aromas, Camino Real, Monterey, Portola, San Andreas and Albion in 2016, and Camarosa, Camino Real, Monterey and Albion in 2017 were either inoculated or non-inoculated with AMF. The analyzed physicochemical components of fruit’s quality were ascorbic acid, titrated acidity, pH, soluble solids, soluble solids/titrated acidity ratio, phenolic compounds, anthocyanins, and firmness. The inoculation with AMF on strawberry plants in field improved the fruit’s physicochemical attributes, increasing pH, soluble solids content, soluble solids/titratable acidity ratio and phenolic compounds content in both cultivation years (2016-2017). The inoculation of AMF has improved the characteristics of post-harvest quality in strawberry fruits.
