Unsafe electrical appliances can be hazardous to humans and can cause electrical fires if not monitored, analyzed, and controlled. The purpose of this study is to monitor the system’s condition, including the electrical properties of the appliances, and to diagnose fault conditions without deploying sensors on individual appliances and analyzing individual sensor data. Using historical data and an acceptable range of normal and leakage currents, we proposed a hybrid model based on multiclass support vector machines (MSVM) integrated with a rule-based classifier (RBC) to determine the changes in leakage currents caused by installed devices at a certain moment. For this, we developed a sensor-based monitoring device with long-range communication to store real-time data in a cloud database. In the modeling process, RBC algorithm is used to diagnose the constructed device fault and overcurrent fault where MSVM is applied for detecting leakage current fault. To conduct an operational field test, the developed device was integrated into some houses. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system in terms of electrical safety monitoring and detection. All the collected data were stored in a structured database that could be remotely accessed through the Internet.

Despite research advocating the Internet of Things (IoT) as an effective in-office monitoring system, little research has presented societal and climate centric discussions. Whereas the United Nations (UN) and other development agencies concerned with climate impact, are advocating transformative actions towards smart cities, very little research in the IoT domain analyzes the advantages of IoT in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) to fill this gap. In this study, a smart office (SO) was developed in a Cisco packet tracer. We then presented the SO through the lens of SDGs. We suggest that SOs support targets mentioned in Goal 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 of the SDGs. This research is crucial - both for developing and developed economies, as we move toward industrialization, while ignoring the adverse impacts of industrialization. This work is expected to provide a pathway with technological innovation toward a more sustainable world for IT practitioners, governments and development agencies.

Homes are becoming an ecosystem of digital devices and appliances, which can be interconnected and controlled. This interconnection can be facilitated by a central smart hub on which home automation software is deployed. Commercially available hubs, while easy to install and use, often support a limited set of devices and protocols, and have a high total cost of ownership. Open-source home automation systems provide an affordable and open alternative, bringing support for devices and services that are unsupported by commercial alternatives. In recent years, the number of available open-source home automation systems has increased drastically. Each system comes with its own set of functionalities and limitations, making choosing a specific solution challenging, as a wrong decision may be costly. In this work, we overview 20 of the prominent open-source home automation systems, from which we select the four most promising ones. To evaluate and compare these systems, we identify key features from a set of use cases and extract specific features for home automation. This results in a two phase study. In the first phase, we perform a use case based analysis based on the extracted features. In the second phase, we perform a criteria-based analysis with 34 criteria that covers aspects such as setup time, quality of documentation, pricing, and hardware requirements. We also identify the commonalities in the architecture that emerge from the systems. The results help to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the various systems and can help the developer and the practitioner make an informed choice when selecting an open-source home automation solution.

Automation over the years has found application in areas of automobiles, industrial machines and some cases system conditioning. Nowadays home and building automation systems have been adopted to a greater extent as means of increasing comfort and achieving easy teleoperation tasks. These include energy management, water management, automatic opening and closing of access points or windows. This paper focuses on the design of an automatic sliding window system that responds to system command via a Bluetooth developed App on a mobile phone. The system uses Arduino as its controller and HC-05 Bluetooth module as a communication link between the controller and mobile application which was developed on MIT Ai2 platform. An ultrasonic sensor is been used to measure the distance of the sliding window to the edge of the wall by sending out and receiving pulses. A distance beyond or less than a threshold implies the system is closed or open and this can be adjusted according to the user's preference using the mobile application. This project involves processes like design, simulation, coding, fabrication and assembling procedures. The fabrication of the window would be of a quarter size compared to normal window size and the material used would be an acrylic glass having a wooden edge. For the control of the system, the stepper motor is connected to the driver which is interfaced with the Arduino PWM pins. The window is communicated to, through the Bluetooth module interfaced to the Arduino Uno to control the motor attached to the window.

This paper is proposing an IoT-based camera surveillance system. The objective of research is to detect suspicious activities by camera automatically and take decision by comparing current frame to previous frame. Major motivation behind research work is to enhance the performance of IoT-based system by integration of edge detection mechanism. Research is making use of numerous cameras, canny edge detection-based compression module, picture database, picture comparator. Canny edge detection has been used to minimize size of graphical content to enhancing the performance system. Simulation of output of this work is made in MATLAB simulation tool. Moreover, MATLAB has been used to give comparative analysis among IoT-based camera surveillance system and traditional system. Such system requires less space, and it takes less time to inform regarding any suspicious activities.

Home automation has drawn a massive attention from last few decades. The benefit of any home automation system is to diminish the hard effort, timings, and errors that generally take place due to inattention of individual. On the other hand, IoT is an infrastructure of numerous linked objects that is extensively used in HAS. Nowadays, the technology has been widened extremely and various applications like the smart home, smart phone, smart city, smart watch, smart shop, etc., have become obligatory applications for every person. As the inhabitation is mounting day by day, there is a big necessity to safeguard the energy and expenditure in every way possible. To save the energy and time, an access mechanism has to be build to control the smart appliances or any home application from inaccessible location. This paper presents technical comparison on IoT-based HAS using smart phone or any other smart applications and sensors.

This paper is about the designing and developing an automatic gate system by implementation Android applications. This is a new improvement to the conventional technique. This project is focused on the development of smart gate prototype in order to improve the current automatic gate that used among the residential houses. The smart gate was controlled by using Android application on a smartphone that connected via a wireless connection. The wireless module ESP8266 was used to set up a server. An Arduino microcontroller was used as an interface between the input and output. The input is the user’s selection from the Android application while the output is the motion of the gate that generated by a DC motor. When the wireless module receiving the incoming signal from the smartphone, the microcontroller will read the signal and trigger the pin to turn on or turn off the DC motor. The ultrasonic sensor was used to detect any intruder that passes through the gate and trigger the buzzer. The limitation of this project is focused on smart gate prototype made of acrylic glass with the base size of 48 cm x 20 cm and a DC motor was used to open or close the gate

Upcoming need of electrical energy have put the Generating Units under continuous pressure of producing more power for more demand. This is also seen at home level where constant addition of electrical equipment has increased the share of more power for the same contracted load demand. This paper tries to bring in light a system which enables to optimally control and manage our load demands and helps us to reduce risk of overloading, extra payment of bill and transforming towards the concept of Sustainable World.
