Manufacturing systems are impacted by frequent reconfigurations, increased uncertainty, and greater complexity. Such characteristics force the use of simulation for their design and analysis. New research trends in the field require further study to provide the capability to cope with the requirements of emerging disciplines. This work proposes a novel approach to simulation modelling to support the development of digital twins. It is based on a communicating hierarchical extension to finite state machines paradigm, extensively used both for representing discrete-event systems and to model agent behaviours. The approach has been validated through the development and implementation of two simulation models in Python.
