... However, considering environmental factors such as the current economic conditions and organizational culture, the boundaries of employability have become different. Studies highlight that perceived employability significantly affects career progression and job security (De Cuyper et al., 2008;Potgieter & Coetzee, 2013;Gamboa et al., 2014). Organizations must invest in training programs, career development initiatives, and internal mobility opportunities to enhance employability, ensuring that employees can transition smoothly within and beyond their current roles. ...
... This study underscores the significance of career adaptability in enhancing perceived employability, with the psychological contract playing a crucial mediating role (De Cuyper et al., 2011;Scholarios et al., 2008). The evolving nature of employment necessitates that individuals take proactive steps to manage their careers, while organizations and educational institutions must provide resources to support this adaptability (Fugate et al., 2004;Potgieter & Coetzee, 2013). ...
The concept of employability has been more focused on in recent years. The concept of perceived employability expresses individuals' control over their lives and careers. Career adaptability means a hierarchical and multidimensional construct, including resources of control, concern, confidence, and curiosity. Employability is a sense of career adaptability in the context of individuals' social construct of managing career transitions. A mutually positive interaction between employability, psychological capital, and subjective well-being can exist. Using Savickas's career construction theory, the current study investigated the relationship between employability and career adaptability and the intermediary effect of the psychological contract. Based on these results, career adaptation ability positively affects psychological contract, and psychological contract affects employability perception; also, based on the results that career adaptation ability positively affects employability perception, this relationship can occur through psychological capital.

JAPANESE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY AS ECONOMIC, CULTURAL, SOCIAL, AND SYMBOLIC CAPITAL IN THE CONTEXT OF GRADUATE EMPLOYABILITY
ABSTRACT
This study examines the employability issues of graduates in Malaysia. Although not a novel concern, the evolving landscape of the job market necessitates continuous research, as the demand for skills in the labor market is dynamic and changes in parallel with the economic situation. The problem addressed in this study is that employability can be enhanced through proficiency in the Japanese language due to its economic, cultural, social, and symbolic values. The rationale behind this is that proficiency in a foreign language is regarded as a critical soft skill for graduates. This study aims to describe the efforts of graduates to master the Japanese language, and to explain how Japanese language skills are valued as cultural, economic, social, and symbolic capital in relation to graduate employability. This research involved 10 informants selected through purposive sampling to include graduates proficient in Japanese and employed in roles that utilize their Japanese language skills. The study was conducted in the Klang Valley area. Data were collected using in-depth interview methods. The findings indicate that the higher the value of Japanese language skills (economic, cultural, social, and symbolic), the greater the efforts by graduates to master the language, thereby enhancing their employability. The study identified that the economic value of Japanese language skills serves as the primary motivator for mastering the language and is the most crucial element in improving graduate employability. This study applies Pierre Bourdieu's theory of capital, focusing on the concept of capital to explain the relationship between the economic, cultural, social, and symbolic values of Japanese language skills in the context of graduate employability. Overall, proficiency in Japanese language can be seen as a significant element contributing to the enhancement of graduate employability. This study thus offers valuable insights into addressing the employability challenges faced by graduates in Malaysia.
... Lim et al., (2016) explained that personal qualities are a set of skills that describe the abilities a person has which are usually used as an assessment when applying for a job. Potgieter and Coetzee (2013) explain that personal qualities are an important part of the job search process and will later influence company development. If someone has good personal qualities, this will help the company to continue to exist and be able to compete with other companies. ...
This research aims to identify the effect of professional skills and personal qualities on employability with job-seeking skills as a moderating variable. This research used the SEM-PLS method involving 242 students in Bali. The results of data analysis showed 1) there is no effect of professional skills (X1) on employability (Y2), 2) there is an effect of personal qualities (X2) on employability (Y2), 3) there is an effect of professional skills (X1) on job-seeking skills ( Y1), 4) the effect of personal qualities (X2) on job-seeking skills (Y1), 5) the existence of job-seeking skills (X2) on employability (Y2), 6) the significant simultaneous effect of professional skills (X1) and job-seeking skills (X2), 7) there is a significant simultaneous effect of personal quality (X2) and job-seeking skills (Y1) on employability (Y2). The results of this research illustrate that employability is greatly affected by personal quality. Therefore, vocational programs at the tertiary level need to integrate personal quality values such as integrity and initiative in the teaching and learning process.
... Need is to create a model with universal application capabilities. Almost all of the researches emphasized to include all types of parameters such as English aptitude, cognitive skills, logical skills, psychometric parameters, background with academic attributes for better prediction (Rahmat, 2015) (Potgieter, 2013) (Finch, 2013). The majority of universities and institutes conduct training and take various types of aptitude test. ...
Educational Data Mining has become extremely popular among researchers in last decade. Prior effort in this area was only directed towards prediction of academic performance of a student. Very less number of researches are directed towards predicting employability of a student i.e. prediction of students performance in campus placements at an early stage of enrollment. Furthermore, existing researches on students employability prediction are not universal in approach and is either based upon only one type of course or University/Institute. Henceforth, is not scalable from one context to another. With the necessity of unification, data of professional technical courses namely Bachelor in Engineering/Technology and Masters in Computer Applications students have been collected from 17 states of India. To deal with such a data, a unified predictive model has been developed and applied on 17 states datasets. The research done in this paper proves that model has universal application and can be applied to various states and institutes pan India with different cultural background and course structure. This paper also explores and proves statistically that there is no significant difference in Indian Education System with respect to states as far as prediction of employability of students is concerned. Model provides a generalized solution for student employability prediction in Indian Scenario.

Educational Data Mining (EDM) is a promising field, where data mining is widely used for predicting students performance. One of the most prevalent and recent challenge that higher education faces today is making students skillfully employable. Institutions possess large volume of data; still they are unable to reveal knowledge and guide their students. Data in education is generally very large, multidimensional and unbalanced in nature. Process of extracting knowledge from such data has its own set of problems and is a very complicated task. In this paper, Engineering and MCA (Masters in Computer Applications) students data is collected from various universities and institutes pan India. The dataset is large, unbalanced and multidimensional in nature. A cluster based model is presented in this paper, which, when applied at preprocessing stage helps in parsimonious selection of variables and improves the performance of predictive algorithms. Hence, facilitate in better prediction of Students Employability.
... Often, ML algorithms perform better with larger datasets, as well as with more information about an applicant or future employee. For example, in Potgieter and Coetzee [15], the authors mention the need for gathering more attributes such as grades for subjects taken during the study period, the results of the oral test, and work status. Unfortunately, collecting extra information is expensive and sometimes even legally challenging due to privacy reasons. ...
Personnel recruitment processes in various government agencies, ministries, boards, and parastatals encounter challenges in effectively selecting candidates who meet specified requirements for job placement on time. Moreover, human resource (HR) managers face the additional burden of appeasing top government officials 73 while also mitigating issues of nepotism and bias during recruitment. The success or failure of any organization heavily relies on the recruitment and retention of its workforce. Consequently, the decision to select suitable candidates for job positions is of utmost importance to management in every organization. This work develops a structured intelligent system that selects the best machine learning (ML) classification model for predicting applicants' employability based on their attributes using the industry job selection criteria. A dataset of 16240 applicants' records collected from Akwa State Universal Basic Education Board (AKSUBEB) was used to train and test the performance of the ML models. Naïve Bayes (NB), Logistic Regression (LR), Support Vector Machines (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and Decision Tree (DT) classifiers were deployed where results indicate that DT emerged the most effective classifier with a 98% prediction accuracy followed by RF with accuracy of 97.59% while LR recorded the least accuracy of 79.43%. This outcome indicates that tree-based ML structures can significantly help HR personnel to efficiently select suitable candidates for given job positions with reduced overhead in the recruitment process.

Orientation: Higher education institutions (HEIs) are crucial in preparing students for the workforce. Practitioners, such as industrial psychologists, can aid HEIs to enhance student development and improve university efficiency.Research purpose: This study aims to investigate the relationship between student demands and resources, proactive behaviour towards strengths use (PBSU) and proactive behaviour towards deficit improvement (PBDI), and students’ well-being (emotional, social and psychological).Motivation for the study: Two specific types of proactive behaviour, namely PBSU and PBDI, have been identified that may contribute to student success. Investigating the impact of these behaviours on student antecedents and outcomes could offer valuable insights for designing student development initiatives.Research approach/design and method: This study included 773 South African first-year university students studying at different campuses of a South African university. Structural equation modelling was used to test the structural model and investigate the regression weights.Main findings: Students’ personal problems were found to predict both PBSU and PBDI negatively. Autonomy positively predicted both types of proactive behaviour. Proactive behaviour towards strengths use was strongly related to emotional and psychological well-being, while PBDI was strongly related to social well-being.Practical/managerial implications: This study highlights the direct impact of PBSU and PBDI on students’ well-being. Practitioners in university settings can benefit from the recommendations provided in this article to inform and implement initiatives related to student development and assist students in developing the necessary skills to enhance their work readiness.Contribution/value-add:This study’s findings contribute to the relatively small body of research on implementing strengths-based and deficit improvement initiatives in South African universities.

This study explores the mediating effect of personality traits in the relationship between entrepreneurial intentions and student academic performance. The sample comprised 175 students from a top-ranked Tamil Nadu, India university. Data was collected using a survey questionnaire as the research instrument. A descriptive research design was employed to understand the variables under investigation comprehensively. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) and SPSS v25 was utilized as the statistical analysis tool. This study used the Theory of Planned Behaviour as a theoretical framework to explore the mediating effect of personality traits in the relationship between entrepreneurial intentions and academic performance among university students. The study’s findings revealed essential insights into the relationship between entrepreneurial intentions, personality traits, and academic performance. The results showed that personality traits significantly mediate the relationship between entrepreneurial intentions and academic performance. This finding suggests that a student’s personality traits influence the impact of entrepreneurial intentions on academic performance. Furthermore, the study found that while entrepreneurial intentions did not have a significant direct effect on academic performance, they did have a substantial indirect effect through personality traits. This indicates that personality traits act as a crucial mechanism through which entrepreneurial intentions can influence academic performance among students.
