Bamboo has been used as a structural material for thousands of years. Due to its advantages in carbon absorption, mechanical properties, material supply and growth rate, etc., many bamboo products, especially engineered bamboo, were proposed and applied in buildings and structures. In this process, more than 40 years have passed since bamboo bolts were first applied. However, the shortage of strength and durability rendered the stagnated development of bamboo bolts, leading to the risk of being completely displaced. To arouse this environmental-friendly and high-specific-strength material in the application of ground anchorage, this paper summarised and further discussed the achievements of bamboo bolts and related products in China, including their classification, mechanical properties, anchorage performance, etc. According to the results, bamboo bolts still have vitality as a means of reinforcement if the shortcomings can be overcome. Therefore, a self-anchored bamboo bolt with a U-anchor head has been proposed in the following, which can give full play to the parallel-to-fibre tensile strength of bamboo strips and thus realise the efficient transformation from material properties to anchorage performance.

In order to determine the design strengths of P. edulis bamboo material, this research carried out a series of material tests on the full-culm P. edulis bamboo specimens, including compression tests parallel to the grain, bending tests, tension tests parallel to the grain, shear tests parallel to the grain and compression tests perpendicular to the grain. The standard values of different strengths for bamboo material were obtained by the Bootstrap method. The influence of the load combination and load effect ratio on the relationship between reliability index β and resistance factor γR was analyzed. A method for calculating the target reliability index of bending strength was proposed. The design strengths of the P. edulis bamboo material were determined and the adjustment method considering different design situations was also put forward. The research results show that the target reliability of the bending strength of bamboo material is suggested to be 3.57. With the same β value, γR is the maximum under the combination of constant load + snow load, and γR is the minimum under the combination of constant load + live load on the office building floor. Under the same load combination and load ratio, the shear strength along the grain has the maximum γR and the compression strength along the grain has the minimum γR. The design strengths of the P. edulis bamboo material were determined by the larger γR of two cases (one is that the load ratio of constant load over live load on the residential building floor is 1.0 and another is that the constant load over live load on the office building floor is 1.0). The design strengths can provide reference for the design and application of bamboo structure.

... Since the bamboo lumber and BFRP material are used for hybrid manufacturing, according to the hybrid principle of composite materials [35], the elastic modulus and the tensile strength of BFRP-bamboo sandwich structure can be calculated and expressed by Eqs. (9) and (10). In these equations, E S = elastic modulus of the BFRP-bamboo sandwich structure, E B and E L = elastic modulus of BFRP laminate and bamboo lumber, V B and V L = volumetric proportions of BFRP laminate (12.5%) and bamboo lumber (87.5%), f s = tensile strength of the BFRP-bamboo sandwich structure, and e f = minimum failure strain between the BFRP material and bamboo lumber. ...

Basalt fibre reinforced polymer (BFRP) bamboo sandwich structure is composed of BFRP material and bamboo lumber, which can overcome the disadvantages of the industrial bamboo material such as poor shear performance, and severe corrosion damage, and effectively improve mechanical properties. Specimens of BFRP-bamboo sandwich panels were prepared using compression molding technique. Through tensile test, compression test, bending test, and shear test, the basic mechanical properties of the novel BFPR-bamboo sandwich structure were studied. The comparison tests with the control specimens of the laminated bamboo lumber (LBL) and the parallel bamboo strand lumber (PBSL) show that: (1) the tensile capacity of bamboo laminates has increased by 15.1% and 16.5% respectively, and the hybrid principle of composite materials can predict its tensile properties; (2) the compressive capacity increased by 39.9% and 21.8%, and the compressive behaviour can be estimated using the column buckling theory; (3) both the flexural bearing capacity and deformability are improved, and the flexural bending properties can be analyzed based on the theory of composite sandwich structure; (4) after composite with BFRP, the shear capacity can be increased by 44% and 22% respectively.

Seen as a sustainable construction material, the introduction of engineered laminated bamboo offers designers a material with great mechanical properties and regular geometric cross-sections to be used as a load-bearing element. However, the performance of bamboo structures in fire must be understood if the use of laminated bamboo in primary load-bearing elements is ever to reach a widespread use in the built environment; currently limiting the use of bamboo to non-load bearing elements in applications where fire might be a problem. Within the scope of the work described herein, constitutive models of bamboo have been investigated to describe the mechanical behaviour of bamboo at elevated temperatures. A range of experimental studies were conducted, focusing on the reduction of compressive strength and elastic modulus of laminated engineered bamboo at elevated temperatures. Within this experimental campaign, a mid-scale bamboo column was fire tested under sustained load and heating exposure to a radiant source of heat. Results have shown that bamboo experiences a reduction of strength and modulus of elasticity at elevated temperatures, with a reduction in mechanical properties resulting in a shift in axial load eccentricity under exposure to one-sided radiant heat. Outcomes from this study will set the basis for developing constitutive models for describing the mechanical behaviour of bamboo columns during and after fire, key for understanding the fire performance of load-bearing bamboo columns.
... However, from the results and from the experience with other materials, it can be useful to try different testing conditions or explore other variables like different moisture contents and testing samples in dry conditions before conducting the mechanical tests [25]. Other variables like the time-history of heating, the residual strength after the cooling phase or sustained load tests with transient temperatures could also give significant results to understand the material behaviour at elevated temperature [26]. ...

Woody bamboos have been used as the primary material in load-bearing structural systems; mainly low-rise buildings, bridge structures or roof systems. Laminated, engineered bamboo has the potential of becoming a mainstream building construction material for mid-and high-rise structures; overcoming challenges in geometrical irregularity, connection detailing and deviation of mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of parallel bamboo strand lumber beams could be improved by aramid fiber reinforced polymer (AFRP). So far, no investigation has been conducted on the strengthening of engineering bamboo beams using AFRP. In order to study the efficiency of AFRP reinforcement on parallel bamboo strand lumber beams, 13 beams had been tested and analyzed. Strain gauges and Laser Displacement Sensors were used for the tests. By sensing the strain and deformation data for the specimens under the applied loads, the results showed that AFRP can effectively improve the flexural mechanical properties of parallel bamboo strand lumber beams. However, this reinforcement cannot increase the deflection of bamboo beams indefinitely. When the cloth ratio was 0.48, the deflection of the specimens reached its maximum. With the increase of cloth ratio, the stiffness of parallel bamboo strand lumber beams was increasing. When the cloth ratio reached 0.72%, compared with the un-reinforced specimen, the stiffness increased by 15%. Therefore, it can be inferred that bonding AFRP on the considered specimens can increase the stiffness of parallel bamboo strand lumber beams. The ductility of the specimen can be effectively enhanced by adopting the AFRP provision.
