... According to Rumbaugh and Blancher (2004), China is among the most important export destinations for many Asian countries, as the major proportion of China's imports come from within the region. A recent study has also pointed out that China's import growth accelerated the exports of neighboring countries (Byukusenge et al., 2017). To discuss export performance in general, and for Pakistan and ASEAN in particular, we present here a limited number of relevant studies addressing the method of constant market share and gravity model. ...

This paper empirically investigated the trade competitiveness and trade potential of Pakistan and ASEAN countries in the Chinese market. The study utilizes trade data for the period of 2003–2019 to assess the bilateral trade aspects by using an extended gravity equation. In addition, the PPML model and constant market share analysis are applied to examine trade potential and competitiveness, respectively. Market size, distance, trade openness, revealed comparative advantage position and common border play an important role in bilateral trade of Pakistan and ASEAN with China, and coefficients of all these variables comply with the economic theory and are statistically significant. Pakistan along with Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, and Thailand has great trade potential in the Chinese market. Particularly Cambodia and Vietnam are enjoying the highest competitive advantage as compared to other ASEAN countries. Pakistan’s export performance in China’s market relies on the market distribution effect. Based on this study, we have discussed country-specific future policy discourse for Pakistan and ASEAN countries in detail.

Purpose: ASEAN-China Free Trade Area or ACFTA was established by ASEAN states and China to create free trade areas by removing barriers to trade in goods and services. While economic cooperation between the ACFTA state members increases, inter-states goods smuggling still happens and affects the economy sector. This article will study, whether ACFTA regulates goods smuggling especially between China and ASEAN and, how the way the ACFTA could learn from the European Union’s systems to resolve goods smuggling and fraud to help ASEAN in reducing the rate of smuggling of imported goods from Indonesian approach. Methodology: This study has employed a normative legal research method with a comparison approach to explain how ACFTA could develop the agreement role in ASEAN to reduce and exterminate goods smuggling activities by comparing the current system with the European Union form of law system and agreement. Main Findings: This study found out that ACFTA missed the discussion about goods smuggling. Trader’s intention to avoid taxes and import duties from importing countries has pushed the import goods smuggling to increase. A large number of Indonesian traders, especially in the outermost area did goods smuggling because of their dependence through the import goods from neighborhood countries. A developed regional framework like the European Union has a special institution that coming from joint European countries authorities working to resolve smuggling matters. Implications/Applications: The study will provide the details related to ACFTA, whether they regulate the import and goods smuggling between China and ASEAN Countries. Learning from the European Union law system and agreement regarding this matter, hoped to be an example for ACFTA to develop the regulation regarding the same matter. Novelty/Originality of this study: Study about the extermination of goods smuggling in ASEAN has not got enough attention from society, meanwhile, it gave an adverse effect on taxation and the economic sector in every state.

Patent area is one among the intellectual property right areas, China issued different and numerous patents during the eighteen years ago. China is a country which issued domestically and no locally the most number of patents but patents distribution in China is unequal in provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities' cities of China. This study investigates the roles of issuing many numbers of patents in economic development of China. Gravity model and endogenous growth model are applied in analyzing data. With gravity model, we use the balanced panel data with fixed effects estimation in analyzing the roles of foreign patents in economic development of China. Those two panel data techniques are selected through Hausman test. With time series data set and endogenous growth model, through R-squared test, pooled OLS regression model or linear regression model is the best estimation in investigating the positive impacts of patents in provinces, cities and regions economic development; in studying the roles of foreign patent on economic the development of China (national level). This study uses STATA as its analysis tool. The patent protection is considered as a very important variable in economic development of China's autonomous regions, municipalities and provinces since granted patent numbers define autonomous regions, municipalities and Provinces' GDP with the perfect significant statistical possibility value of zero% and with increase of 7%. In China's autonomous regions, municipalities and Provinces, the number of patent protections is the main intellectual property right protection and it is very important due to its positive influence on the expansion of China's economy in autonomous regions, municipalities and Provinces.

The business of international trade has never been identified as zero-sum. Yet, dependence on regional agreements to provide alternate means for countries to overlook shortcomings persists. China's recent rise up the trade value-chain has fostered an assumption that the regional agreement provides various advantages to exports from Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries. This paper provides an empirical assessment of the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area (ACFTA) impact on ASEAN export efficiency into the Chinese market, in pre and post eras. Using a structured gravity approach to estimate potential export pattern at aggregate and industry level, this research indicates that though not consistent across years, the ACFTA offers improvements to ASEAN exports to China. No clear effects of the ACFTA can be extrapolated from the years surrounding the initial signing (Article 8-2004). However, following its full enactment (2010), the ACFTA resulted in more sustainable trade from ASEAN members towards China, at both the industry and country levels. While seeing improvements in export efficiency during its era, ACFTA's facilitation of efficiency measures with China came at no expense to other major export destinations.
