The rise of social media has significantly altered how information is shared and consumed, leading to questions about its impact on various aspects of life, particularly in relation to political engagement. Social media has emerged as a powerful tool in modern society, shaping opinions, spreading information, influencing behaviors, and driving discussions on critical issues, including political awareness and active civic engagement worldwide. This investigation seeks to elucidate the connection between social media exposure and political engagement, while evaluating its significance in modern society. The study comprised 300 participants, including first to fourth-year students. This study employs a quantitative approach and adopts a descriptive-correlational design. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test indicated a deviation from normal distribution in the data. Descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations) showed a moderate positive correlation between social media use and political participation among the 300 participants (r = 0.472, p < 0.001). Students reported high social media use (M = 3.46, SD = 0.53), but relatively low political engagement (M = 2.51, SD = 0.724). Linear regression analysis confirmed social media use as a significant predictor of political participation (B = 0.724, p < 0.001), suggesting a positive relationship. This indicates that higher social media use may be associated with greater political involvement, despite the overall low level of engagement.
... Subject selection was carried out through deliberate sampling, targeting individuals who fit the Gen Z demographic and had an interest or awareness of Islamic politics and identity issues in Indonesia. This approach ensures that the data collected is relevant to the research objectives and reflects the perspective of the target population (Ida, R., Saud, M., & Mashud, 2020;Merrilees et al., 2014). This study aims to explore Gen Z's perceptions of Islamic identity politics in Indonesia and its impact on their mindset and social life. This study uses a quantitative approach with a survey method of 62 respondents, the majority of whom are students. Data were collected through a Likert-based questionnaire designed to measure respondents' understanding and views on identity politics. The results showed that 43.5% of respondents considered Islamic identity politics to have the potential to divide society, while 51.6% of respondents considered the use of religious symbols in political campaigns to be quite effective. In addition, 77.5% of respondents acknowledged the major role of social media in shaping their views. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive and inferential statistical methods, which showed a significant relationship between identity politics and Generation Z's mindset and social life. This is manifested by the important role of a more inclusive approach in religious-based political policies in Indonesia. This finding is able to reflect how the younger generation is increasingly aware of complex social and political issues and shows their tendency to assess religious issues more rationally and openly. Therefore, this study provides an important contribution in understanding the dynamics of identity politics from the perspective of the younger generation who will be the main actors in the future of Indonesian democracy.
... For example, Omotayo and Folorunso (2020) illustrate that Nigerian youth tend to be very active on social media platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp in discussing and sharing political campaigns that greatly influenced them to engage in politics. Similarly, Ida, Saud, and Mashud (2020) indicate that the engagement of Indonesian and Pakistani youth with social media has helped both their engagement in political learning and their participation for active engagement in political discourses. This shows that digital media acts as a critical driver in encouraging youth involvement in political processes. ...
... Participants indicated that media literacy helped in understanding political campaigns and media portrayals in the 2024 South African elections. This supports the assertion of the cognitive mobilisation theory that access to information empowers political engagement (Allam et al. 2020;Ida, Saud, and Mashud 2020). This study provides evidence that media literacy supports broader political and social engagement. ...
By providing citizens with the knowledge they need to meaningfully participate in the democratic process, the media plays a vital role in the growth and consolidation of the democratic project. Also essential is citizens' aptitude to critically examine, assess, produce and understand media and its social role in a democracy. The current study explores the role of media literacy in democratic engagement and social change among South African university students. The paper attempts to contextualise how students' levels of media literacy led them to political participation, critical thinking and overall contribution to social change in a post-apartheid era. The paper draws on the cognitive mobilisation theory to argue that better media literacy helps students think critically about media, and improve their political knowledge, involvement and contribution to social change. Data for this study were collected by conducting in-depth interviews with n = 30 university students who were selected through a convenience sampling strategy. Results revealed that media literacy significantly influences university students' engagement in democratic processes and societal transformation in post-apartheid South Africa. Media literacy also enhances their political knowledge, participation and critical analysis of media messages. These findings have implications for policy and practice in media literacy education.

Social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube have become significant channels for public discourse, where users freely express opinions, including negative sentiments and hate speech. To better understand public opinion, particularly in politically charged contexts, sentiment analysis can classify user comments as either positive or negative. This study aims to analyze public sentiment regarding the formation of a special advisory team for President Jokowi, using a sentiment classification approach. The study employed a Naïve Bayes classifier to analyze sentiment from 3,000 comments gathered from Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. The dataset was divided into 80% training data (used to train the model with known sentiment) and 20% test data. The Naïve Bayes algorithm was chosen for its simplicity and effectiveness in handling large datasets in text classification tasks. The Naive Bayes classification on sentiment analysis of public opinion regarding the appointment of presidential advisors achieved an overall accuracy of 71% in classifying the test data. Negative sentiment was classified with an accuracy of 71%, while positive sentiment was classified with an accuracy of 70%. The results demonstrate that the Naïve Bayes classifier is a viable method for sentiment analysis in political discourse, although the model's performance indicates room for improvement. The novelty of this research lies in its focus on sentiment analysis of public opinion specifically related to presidential advisory appointments, an area not yet extensively explored in sentiment analysis studies. This study contributes to the field by providing insights into the public’s perception of political decisions using machine learning techniques. The implications for future research include refining classification methods for better accuracy and applying the model to other political or governmental topics.

Over the past few decades, social media has developed a ubiquitous part of our global world mainly used for commerce, networking, and entertainment. However, over the last few years, there has been a rise in the use of social media in party-political debate and actions, especially in developed democracies and post-militarized countries. Is this to suggest that social media will have an effect on democratic transformation and consolidation in the twenty-first century? This paper aims to address this question by exploring the usage of social media as a potential democratic consolidation instrument in Pakistan, Nigeria, and Brazil. There is no denying that digital technologies and social media networks have dramatically improved human contact in the twenty-first century. Because of the partaking, collaborating, and moneymaking attributes of social media, they have become veritable tools for the strengthening of self governing principles and processes in terms of knowledge exchange, election tracking, and assessment, reduction of tensions and anxieties related to votes, and maintaining and even implementing transparency and answerability to a wide swath of the population. The paper, on the other hand, acknowledges that while social media has its own set of issues, such as the potential for violence and despoliation, these can be effectively mitigated, if not entirely eliminated, through adequate monitoring and regulatory controls deprived of jeopardizing the independence of speech. It thus contends that, despite the teething problems in each nation, the proper use of social media in fostering and maintaining participatory democracy in Pakistan, Nigeria, and Brazil in the twenty-first century has the potential to deepen and consolidate democracy in the respective countries.

Social media has proven to be quite effective in raising awareness and anti-corruption movements in society. This research aimed to analyze the use of social media Twitter as a means of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in conducting anti-corruption campaigns in Indonesia. The research employed a qualitative content analysis on the KPK's official Twitter account. The data were processed using the NVIVO 12 Plus software to answer research questions. This research revealed that the KPK's Twitter account is quite active in carrying out anti-corruption campaign activities, although in general it is not optimal. It can be seen from the low intensity of communication and limited communication network so that it is considered as less collaborative. Improving the problems is needed by KPK as it must also show good performance so that public trust continues in high condition. However, this research has limitations in looking at all anti-corruption campaigns carried out by the KPK because it only used Twitter as the reference. Therefore, further research is suggested to analyze all KPK social media such as Youtube and Instagram.
