... Tourism in rural areas/space (TRA/S) is an important economic sector [1] that has grown in importance over the last decade in some contexts [2] and can be considered as a link between different economic activities [3]. From this perspective, this tourism is fundamental for balanced development in less favoured regions and has its relevance as an economic sector within the global economy and within the dynamics of tourism. ...

For sustainable rural development, the complementarity between the socioeconomic activities developed in rural areas is fundamental to create synergies and economic dynamics with positive externalities for the populations in less favoured spaces. The great challenge for the rural regions is the creation of attractive employment to avoid the desertification of these areas and the respective consequences. Some of the impacts of the rural exodus are related to the agroforestry activities abandonment and the increase of biomass in the respective land which, in certain circumstances, is fuel for forest fires. Tourism in rural areas/space (TRA/S) may contribute significantly to improving the complementarity among activities in less favoured spaces and promoting sustainability in mentioned areas. From this perspective, this research aims to explore dimensions associated with TRA/S, highlighting the main contributions from the scientific literature and showing that it can be considered, in some contexts, a broader concept than the concept of rural tourism. To achieve these objectives, first a systematic review based on metrics from the bibliometric analysis was carried out, considering 165 documents found in the Scopus database in a search performed on 19 March 2024 for the following topics and conditions: “tourism in rural areas” or “tourism in rural space.” Then, statistics on the Portuguese reality are presented and analysed, highlighting evidence of the context in Portugal. The findings obtained from the systematic review and bibliometric analysis show the importance of this economic activity for the rural regions and reveal some gaps in the literature that may be considered in future studies, namely the following: the links between tourism in rural areas and economic dynamics should be further developed, further address the interconnection between TRA/S dynamics and the Sustainable Development Goals, and more knowledge about the particularities of each Portuguese context. The statistical analysis of the Portuguese context shows that tourism in rural areas has benefited from the pandemic; it seems that tourists have discovered this form of tourism.
... A larger proportion of studies also reported "lack of training" as one of the main challenges faced by MSEs in tourism destinations (Grimstad & Burgess, 2014;Harilal & Nyikana, 2019;Hyasat et al., 2022;Litheko & Potgieter, 2019;Mxunyelwa & Lloyd, 2019;Mxunyelwa & Vallabh, 2017;van Haastert & de Grosbois, 2010;Vlahov, 2021). However, during the first decade of inquiry (2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012), studies paid very little attention to lack of training as a challenge faced by MSEs in tourism destinations. ...

Micro and small enterprises (MSEs) play a crucial role in the tourism industry, yet they have faced numerous challenges. This systematic review examines challenges faced by MSEs in the tourism industry, utilizing a PRISMA-method analysis of 82 Scopus database articles. Four interconnected themes emerge: lack of funding, lack of training, lack of education and awareness, and lack of skills. Funding emerges as the root cause of these challenges. The study underscores the need for policymakers to address the intertwined issues of funding, skills, training, education, and awareness hindering MSEs. Despite the recognition of these challenges in existing literature, few studies propose solutions for sustainable development. This research provides valuable insights for policymakers, bridging a gap in understanding the issues faced by MSEs. The proposed solutions aim to create a win-win situation for all stakeholders and the destination in this era of constant change brought on by COVID-19 and other crises.
... Furthermore, stakeholder management positively influences the success of a project (Francisco de Oliveira & Rabechini, 2019). Researchers such as Manowong and Ogunlanas (2010), Lyon et al. (2017) and Litheko and Potgieter (2019) highlighted that when stakeholder management is not done properly, perceptions of it deteriorate, chances of attaining goals decrease, and additional opportunities for interacting with stakeholders for the benefit of the project are significantly diminished. Thus, ecotourism sustainability can be easily hampered due to poor stakeholder management. ...

Ecotourism offers several economic, environmental, and cultural benefits; however, even after all these years, achieving ecotourism sustainability is still complex because of multiple stakeholders with diversified interests and influence. This study focused on the multiple stakeholders' complexity and management for achieving sustainable ecotourism in Penang Hill in Malaysia. Understanding the existence of multiple stakeholders with varying interests and their respective power of influence is critical for a tourism destination to be sustainable. This study aimed to create a multi-stakeholder management framework and understand stakeholder management's mediating role toward ecotourism sustainability in Penang Hill. Data were collected from Penang Hill key stakeholders and analyzed using SmartPLS and fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA). The findings revealed that stakeholder management plays a significant mediating role in achieving ecotourism sustainability. Stakeholders’ interests and their level of influence should be understood to develop engagement, empowerment, and monitoring strategies for managing stakeholders. Thus, the study contributes by validating the results through symmetric and asymmetric techniques, offering solutions to the emerging issues during the Covid-19 pandemic, and recommending policy changes. Lastly, the study also extends prior literature by displaying the mediating role played by stakeholder management on ecotourism sustainability, comparing indirect and total effects on stakeholder management support for achieving sustainable ecotourism in Penang Hill.

The article aims to present the essence of agritourism in the literature regarding the subject of its profitability during the COVID-19 pandemic. To verify the goal, data from our own research was applied. The research was conducted in 2019 and 2020 with the exploratory survey method and an interview questionnaire. Thirty-two service providers running agritourism activities in randomly selected rural communes of the Podlaskie province (communes of Mielnik, Suchowola, Giby, Płaska, and Hajnówka) participated in the study. The Ward cluster analysis method was used to group the counties of the Podlaskie Province in terms of spatial differentiation in the development of agritourism. For this purpose, data provided by the Central Statistical Authority in Poland reported for 2019 and the primary data (research by M. Roman) was applied. In the first part of the article, the authors describe and explain the basic concepts of rural tourism and agritourism based on the literature. The figures were also quoted, for example, the number of agritourism farms in Poland and other European countries. The last part of the study provides the results of our own research. The study demonstrates that in 2020 agritourism was profitable, as the owners of the farms recorded a profit. The research confirms the massive impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on agritourism. During a pandemic, many people choose places with few people (e.g., rural areas). The research also considered the importance of innovation on agritourism farms and business profitability. The issues discussed in the study relate to current events—scientific studies examining the impact of COVID-19 on agritourism concern other countries; however, the authors were not able to find studies focusing on agritourism farms in Poland. A new element of methodology in this article was to organize the concepts of agritourism and to present the impact of coronavirus pandemic on the profitability of agritourism. It was also essential to present the classification of rural tourism. According to the authors of the study, the problems covered here are new and point to new trends in the development of agritourism during the pandemic.

Rural tourism as a diversification strategy might contribute to the sustainability of rural territories in developing countries. However, studies of the forms of how stakeholders relates are required to understand the configuration characteristics of the formal and informal dynamics present at a regional level. This paper explains the mediating role of collaborative governance between rural tourism and sustainable territory development in rural areas through quantitative research using structural equation modeling. The scales were validated by surveying members of civil society, the state, and the productive sector in Colombia. The results confirmed the reliability and validity of the measurement models. Additionally, they validated the dimensions proposed to determine the mediating role of collaborative governance between rural tourism and sustainable territory development. Finally, this document could contributes to a regional consensus on the role of collaborative governance in developing rural tourism actions that significantly promotes the sustainable development of rural territories.

The development of agro-tourism in the Mangistau region is taking place in the economic and socio-cultural areas, becoming important in preservation of natural and cultural heritage. Purpose – the authors consider the current state and prospects of rural tourism in the region. Methods – the information base of the study is statistical data from the Bureau of National Statistics of the Agency for Strategic Planning and Reforms of the Republic of Kazakhstan, information from domestic periodicals and international literature sources. Results – analysis of the available tourism resources in rural areas of the region based on the 4E model of Joseph Pine and James Gilmore was carried out, a comparison of the demographic situation in the countryside and in the city, seasonality of tourism activities was determined, the resources of tourism industry were analyzed, and best foreign practices were shown. Shortcomings of objects of tourist agribusiness were revealed in the region. The authors point out that this type of tourist services is still underdeveloped due to numerous problems that hinder their spread, among which are the backwardness of social and engineering infrastructure of rural areas, poor quality of the road network and transport links. All this reduces the attractiveness, does not contribute to the preservation of the ecology of rural areas, makes it difficult to arrange and create the necessary conditions for accommodation of tourists. Conclusions – agro-tourism helps to strengthen the economy of rural settlements, creates additional jobs, reduces the outflow of villagers to cities, increases their cultural and intellectual level, stimulates production of environmentally friendly food, income generation due to the development of local trade. Expanding the scope of its distribution requires a systematic approach, taking into account the specifics of the region.

Ecotourism brings many economic, environmental, and socio-cultural benefits to the tourism destination, but its implementation is not simple. Several studies in the past have shown the importance of including stakeholders for the development of ecotourism in the area. Understanding stakeholders varied interests and their power of influence is vital to achieve sustainability in a tourism destination. The study aimed to develop a multi-stakeholder management model that could unite stakeholders towards achieving sustainable ecotourism in the area. A critical synthesis of the literature was conducted by classifying and then critically reviewing the literature to construct and integrate the variables that could help in the better management of stakeholders, which would lead towards the development of a framework that can guide in achieving sustainability in ecotourism. This study validates previous findings and also directs to develop a sustainable ecotourism framework through which the environmental, social, and economic benefits can be achieved in the destination. Understanding multiple stakeholders helps to achieve sustainability and, as a result, makes the tourist destination experience better for both the visitor and host. The developed model would add value to the literature by enriching tourism destination stakeholders understanding, precisely related to the multiple stakeholder management, and leads to achieving ecotourism sustainability.

Objective - Ecotourism is one of the fastest-growing sectors of tourism. It is considered to be an alternative to mass tourism. The negative impacts, such as loss of biodiversity and loss of natural resources is confronted with the help of ecotourism. For the past years, stakeholders are considered to be vital for ecotourism implementation. Successful implementation of the ecotourism is not possible without the understanding, involvement and management of the stakeholders. Stakeholder management is vital for the successful ecotourism implementation in the destination, but it is not as simple as it sounds. Even though many types of research have been made on the issue of achieving ecotourism sustainability in tourism destination but there is still a lack of a robust and proper model that can assist in the management of stakeholders which can help to unify stakeholders to achieve sustainable ecotourism in the destination. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore the importance of identifying stakeholder management significance that can enhance stakeholder interests to unify them towards achieving sustainable ecotourism in the destination. Methodology/Technique – Content analysis was done, and the study concludes that in order to manage stakeholders, their engagement has to be well planned by understanding their interests and level of influence. Twenty-one articles were selected and analyzed from Scopus and Web of Science databases. Finding – The management of the stakeholders varies accordingly to the destination due to which it has to be carefully planned so that sustainable ecotourism can be implemented in the destination. Stakeholders understanding will provide a win-win situation for the destination and make the ecotourism implementation process smoother. Moreover, the study also fills in the theoretical gap of the analysis of the studies, which is a part of a significant contribution towards ecotourism implementation in a destination.
