Objective
The objective of this review was to explore the experiences of mothers with the practice of kangaroo mother care for preterm neonates at home in sub-Saharan Africa.
Introduction
Newborn deaths globally have remained high despite the significant reductions in deaths among under-fives over the past few decades. More than 7000 deaths occur...

... The SR of Bayo et al. (Bayo et al., 2022), in sub-Saharan Africa, highlights that, despite being a region with a high rate of prematurity and poverty, mothers receive late information about CM and perceive it as more complicated than other traditional forms of care. . They also point out that, in Ethiopia, although 100% of mothers knew about CM, up to 30% were unaware of its main benefits and 69% did not know the recommended duration for its practice. ...
... The support of community and religious leaders is also recommended to promote successful implementation of the CM. Finally, although there are challenges, Bayo et al., emphasize that knowledge of the benefits of CM and the observation of weight gain in premature babies motivate mothers to adopt this practice (Bayo et al., 2022). ...
Objective: Review the current scientific evidence on the physiological effects of kangaroo care, explore the barriers and facilitators to its implementation, and identify areas of knowledge that have not yet been explored. Theoretical Framework: The kangaroo care method, despite its benefits for premature and low birth weight babies, faces implementation challenges. Its acceptance and application vary due to various factors, including cultural and institutional ones, as well as the lack of support for mothers and families. Method: Integrative review of quantitative and qualitative studies. The critical appraisal of the studies was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute tool. Principio del formulario Results and Discussion: Evidence supports the effectiveness of kangaroo care in improving physiological parameters of the neonate such as heart rate, body temperature, and oxygen saturation. The main barriers to its implementation include: visiting hour restrictions, healthcare staff workload, negative cultural beliefs, lack of information and empowerment of mothers, and limited involvement of fathers. Research Implications: Provides information on how the implementation of kangaroo care benefits the care of premature newborns, as well as aspects that influence its implementation. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by providing a comprehensive assessment of the effectiveness, safety, and applicability of kangaroo care in neonatal care. It allows for the visualization of barriers and facilitators to its implementation, providing identification of areas for improvement and gaps that may require future studies.

Objectives. We investigated the challenges faced by mothers of preterm babies practicing KMC during the Covid-19 pandemic and documented the mothers’ suggestions of possible interventions. Methods. We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study at the New Born Unit of Kenyatta National Hospital(KNH). We interviewed 82 mothers using a researcher-administered questionnaire with closed and open-ended questions. Qualitative data generated from open-ended questions was analyzed thematically. Results. KMC was majorly affected by; fear of the baby contracting COVID-19, fear of contracting COVID-19, and social distancing restrictions. The mothers’ suggested interventions included; the need for more KMC rooms, provision of appropriate clothing, strict application of COVID-19 prevention guidelines, and greater support of practice by the family. Conclusion. The mother’s pivotal role as a partner in decision-making in regard to the improvement of KMC during pandemics and possibly other settings was demonstrated. Targeted interventions should incorporate the suggestions from the mothers.
Objective
The objective of this methodological scoping review was to investigate ways in which qualitative review teams are addressing equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in the process of conducting and reporting qualitative systematic reviews that use JBI guidelines.
Introduction
To promote health equity, there is a need for evidence synthesis processes and practices to develop approaches that incorporate EDI. Some guidance is available to guide equity-focused review methods and reporting, but this is primarily oriented to quantitative systematic reviews. There is currently limited knowledge about how review teams are addressing EDI within qualitative evidence syntheses.
Inclusion criteria
This review included English-language qualitative systematic reviews, published in 2022, that used all the steps outlined in JBI guidance for qualitative reviews.
Methods
A 1-year sample of published reviews was identified from a search undertaken on March 17, 2023, of 2 health care databases: MEDLINE (Ovid) and CINAHL (EBSCOhost). Data extraction followed a framework approach, using an adapted preexisting equity template. This included attention to i) the reporting of a range of characteristics associated with EDI, ii) search approaches, and iii) analytical approaches (including reflexivity, intersectionality, and knowledge user engagement). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and narrative summary.
Results
Forty-three reviews met the inclusion criteria. The majority of reviews (n=30) framed their questions and aims in a generic/universal (rather than EDI-focused) way. Six reviews justified their population focus in terms of an EDI-related issue. Only one review included a knowledge user. The sociodemographic and other key characteristics of the samples in underpinning studies were poorly reported, making it hard to discern EDI-related issues or to undertake EDI-related analyses. Thirteen of the reviews included non-English-language evidence sources, and 31 reviews included gray literature sources. Ten reviews demonstrated an element of intersectional or otherwise critical approaches within their analyses of categories and synthesized findings (whereby issues of power and/or representation were explicitly considered). Only 8 reviews included discussions of review team composition and reflexivity within the review process.
Conclusions
This EDI-focused methodological enquiry has highlighted some limitations within current qualitative evidence synthesis practice. Without closer attention to EDI, there is a danger that systematic reviews may simply serve to amplify, rather than illuminate, existing gaps, silences, and inequitable knowledge claims based on dominant representations. This review sets out a range of suggestions to help qualitative evidence synthesis teams to more systematically embed EDI within their methods and practices.
