Following Ramadhan fasting, Muslims celebrate Eid Al-Fitr, marked by abundance of traditional and convenience foods. This celebration often results in changes to food intake and physical activity patterns. This study aimed to analyze food consumption frequency and physical activity among Indonesian Muslims during Eid Al-Fitr. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 533 participants, aged 18–65, between the 5th and 7th day after Eid. Data on sociodemographic factors (e.g., gender, age, education, income), food consumption (e.g., fruits, vegetables, Opor, Rendang, cakes, sweetened beverages), and physical activity levels were collected. The study also explored barriers to fruit and vegetable intake and physical activity. The results showed that most participants were female (70.5%), aged 18–35 years (78.2%), from Java Island (63.5%), with at least a bachelor’s degree (62.3%), and a monthly income above Rp. 3,500,000 (~ US$221). A high percentage reported low-frequency consumption of fruits (68.1%) and vegetables (52.3%). Opor and Rendang were consumed ≥ 2 times/day by only 36.4% and 30.2% of participants, respectively, while 59.7% consumed cakes ≥ 2 times/day. The primary barrier to consuming fruits and vegetables was availability. Moreover, more than half of respondents (56.5%) reported low physical activity, mainly due to lack of awareness. Gender, age, education, and region significantly influenced food choices and physical activity. In conclusion, promoting the availability of fruit and vegetable during Eid Al-Fitr could reduce reliance on energy-dense foods.

Diversifikasi pangan adalah upaya peningkatan ketersediaan dan konsumsi pangan yang beragam, bergizi seimbang, dan berbasis pada potensi sumber daya lokal. Hal tersebut tercantum dalam Undang-Undang No. 18 tahun 2012 tentang Pangan. Diversifikasi pangan lokal menjadi peluang penting untuk mempromosikan keberlanjutan ekonomi dan lingkungan. Diversifikasi juga dapat meningkatkan ketahanan pangan suatu wilayah dengan mengurangi risiko kekurangan pasokan akibat perubahan iklim atau krisis global. Buku Diversifikasi Pangan Lokal untuk Ketahanan Pangan: Perspektif Ekonomi, Sosial, dan Budaya membahas diversifikasi pangan dari perspektif ekonomi, sosial, budaya, dan hukum. Pada kenyataannya, Indonesia merupakan salah satu negara yang memiliki variasi produk pangan lokal melimpah. Namun, belum semua variasi pangan lokal tersebut telah dibudidayakan secara optimal oleh masyarakat. Masalah utama yang dihadapi pemerintah adalah terkait pemerataan ketersediaan produk bahan pangan di seluruh wilayah Indonesia. The Dayak tribe consumes wild indigenous vegetables as a part of their diet. However, there is limited information available about the pests and diseases affecting these vegetables. To address this, a study was conducted to investigate and identify the presence of natural enemies such as parasites and predators, as well as to assess the dominance of arthropods and the occurrence of diseases. The parameters studies included the symptoms of pest and disease attacks, the dominance index and incidence of diseases, and the order and family classifications of arthropods, based on the morphology of pests, parasites, and predators, respectively. Results revealed that the arthropods identified were composed of 8 orders, 36 families and 660 individuals. The predator population was found to be 94.46% on the soil surface, while the population of nocturnal insects was 74.19%. The presence of pests was predominantly found on the canopy, accounting for 92.83%. The arthropod dominance index was categorized as high, with values of 0.58 and 0.75, dominated by yellow mites (Tarsonemidae) and weaver ants (Formicidae). On the other hand, the dominance index of nocturnal insects was only 0.15. The disease incidence of Solanum ferox caused by Colletotrichum sp was 5%, lower than that observed in Helminthostachys zeylanica, Allium schoenoprasum, and Ceratopteris thalictroides caused by Curvularia sp (45.8%), but still considered to be in the non-hazardous category.

Sundanese people in West Java have been known for their tradition of consuming various vegetable plants (Lalab). This study aims to elucidate the Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) on various vegetable plants, folk classification, and use and processing of vegetable plants for family use in the rural Sund anese community in Cijambu Village, Tanjungsari Sub-district, Sumedang District, West Java, Indonesia. This study employed mixed qualitative and quantitative methods with an ethnobotanical and gastronomic approach. The results showed that 67 different local varieties (landraces) of vegetable plants were documented from 65 species, representing 56 genera and 27 families that the Sundanese people of Cijambu commonly use. These vegetable plants can be classified into three categories: vegetable source, part used, and use and processing of vegetables. The people obtain their vegetables from various sources, such as their homegardens, gardens, rice fields, Perhutani agroforests, and other non-farming sources, including markets, small village shops, and vegetable sellers. The parts of vegetable plants usually consumed by the people of Cijambu Village can be divided into eight parts: the bulb, flower, fruit, leaf, rhizome, root/tuber, seed, and shoot. The vegetable plants are traditionally consumed as fresh raw salad and cooked vegetables, spices, and at least 12 main or basic types of Sundanese food meals, namely various Acar, Asinan, Buntil, Karedok, Lodeh, Lotek, Rujak, Sambel, Sayur/Angeun, Semur, Tumis/Oseng, and Urab with a total of 58 kinds of food meals. At the same time, various Sundanese chili sauces (Sambel) were documented in at least 14 types. Based on ethnobotanical gastronomy, the Sundanese community's cultural practice of consuming Lalab results from a complex interaction between human communities, food, and their local environment. © 2023, Society for Indonesian Biodiversity. Herbaceous terrestrial plants – both dicots and monocots – are classified as geophytes when they generate underground storage organs like bulbs, corms, tubers, and tuberous roots. These structures allow developing shoot buds to hibernate in order to avoid unfavorable seasonal conditions. With the advent of ideal conditions, the shoot buds will sprout and develop into plants, completing their life cycle. These organs also accumulate nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, water, and secondary metabolites. Plants have therefore evolved this mechanism to endure times of drought and other environmental challenges by protecting shoot buds belowground and providing stored resources. Humans have been cultivating these underground structures as a source of food and nutrition. They are known as roots and tuberous crops. This chapter describes various underground storage organ types, their development, and the significance of these organs for plants and for their propagation, as well as the importance of these organs for human welfare. We additionally discuss the biological activities of the bioactive compounds found in underground organs using a variety of examples, including gigantic taro (Alocasia macrorrhizos), safed musli (Chlorophytum borivilianum), spider lily (Crinum asiaticum), and aromatic ginger (Kaempferia galanga).

Biodiversitas 23: 5367-5372. Stenochlaena J. Smith is belonging to the family of Blechnaceae, consisting of only seven species and widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions. In Central Kalimantan Indonesia, Stenochlaena is also widely distributed and abundant in this province. The paper will deliver the diversity of species, and chemical composition value of Stenochlaena in Central Kalimantan. The method used was a survey conducted in the tree district of Central Kalimantan namely Barito Selatan, Kapuas, and Palangka Raya. The key to species determination used was a paper published by Chamber (2013). Chemical composition was measured by proximate analysis while elemental content was established by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. This is the first report on the proximate and element components of some Stenochlaena species, other than Stenochlaena palustris. The results showed that there were four species of Stenochlaena found in Central Kalimantan, namely Stenochlaena palustris, Stenochlaena tenuifolia, Stenochlaena milnei and Stenochlaena cumingi. Stenochlaena palustris had the greatest moisture and proteins while S. cumingii had the highest content of ash. The biggest content of lipids was owned by S. milnei meanwhile S. tenuifolia had the most content of fiber. Stenochlaena palustris also had the highest N, P, K, Mg meantime, the highest Ca and Fe were in S. cumingii and S. milnei, respectively.

Rorippa indica L. Hiern is a local vegetable that is widely consumed by Dayak’s tribe in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. It is mostly traditionally cultivated without fertilizers, resulting in low productivity. The research aimed to investigate the effect of fertilizers and soil type on the growth characteristics and N uptake of R. indica. The experiment was arranged in a factorial completely randomized design consisting of two factors with four replications. The first factor was fertilizer application (control, 20 t ha-1 of chicken manure, and 600 kg ha-1 of NPK), and the second was soil type (peat and Ultisol). The results revealed that the interaction of fertilizers and soil type gave a non-significant effect on all variables observed, except N uptake. The application of NPK increased the plant height and number of leaves significantly. Compared to control, the increment was 112.50% and 130.32%, respectively, and chicken manure application increased the dry weight (327.87%), N total (310.16%), and N uptake of plants by 478% in peat soil and 228% in Ultisol. This finding concludes that 20 t ha-1 of chicken manure can be applied to increase the productivity of R. indica.

Kelakai (Stenochlaena palustris) is a typical Kalimantan plant that has been used by Banjar and Dayak communities as traditional medicine and vegetable. This study aimed to examine the potential of kelakai leaves extracts as a natural product to inhibit Aeromonas hydrophila growth. This research included kelakai leaves sampling in Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan, Indonesia, extraction (EtOH 1:4 w/v), phytochemical and chemicals profile screening (LCMS), prediction of biological activity (PASS server), antibacterial activity (broth dilution), antioxidant activity (DPPH), total phenol (gallic acid equivalent), total flavonoid (quercetin equivalent), and total alkaloid (caffeine equivalent). The phytochemical screening showed that the kelakai leaves extract contained saponins, tannins, phenolics, flavonoids, alkaloids, anthraquinones, triterpenoids, and steroids. The chemicals profile of the kelakai leaves ethanol extract consisting of alkaloids, alcohols, amines, amine alcohols, amino acids, fatty acids, flavonoids, glycosylglucose, lipid derivatives, monocarboxylic acid, saponins, steroids, and terpenoids. Prediction of biological activity showed kelakai leaves extract an inhibitor of the peptidoglycan glycosyltransferase enzyme and free radical scavenger. The antibacterial assay showed that kelakai leaves extract could inhibit the growth of A. hydrophila. In addition, kelakai leaves extract showed very strong antioxidant potential (IC50 42.47 ± 0.98 µg/mL), with a total phenol content of 193.97 ± 0.11 mg GAE/g, total flavonoid 23.45 ± 0.14 mg QE/g, and total alkaloid 11.74 ± 0.10 mg CE/g. These research findings show that the ethanol extract of kelakai leaves could be antibacterial against A. hydrophila, which is closely related to its antioxidant properties.
