... The strong policy compliance rates and stakeholder role clarity are encouraging, aligning with the findings of [45]. However, gaps in policy communication and enforcement, as noted by 5% of respondents, echo concerns identified by Delvika [46] regarding communication inefficiencies. The discrepancy between policy awareness and policy execution mirrors Pilusa's [47] findings, where knowledge of the OHS legislation did not always equate to full understanding or practice. ...

The quality of education is significantly influenced by occupational health and safety (OHS) measures. To this end, a safety incident at a university could have far-reaching negative effects on facilitating teaching and learning for both lecturers and students. Although OHS standards are widely established in numerous industries, they are often overlooked in the academic setting. It is for this reason that, to date, research gap exists in OHS systems in academic settings. While universities primarily focus on education, they also pose significant health and safety risks to staff and students due to their design and setup. Effective implementation of an occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS) within universities can mitigate these risks. However, there is a notable lack of research focusing on the efficiency of OHSMS in South African universities. This study, therefore, aimed to fill this gap by assessing the efficiency of the OHSMS at a South African university. Data were collected using in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis qualitative research methods. Data analysis was carried out using the thematic analysis approach. Inductive logic was used in the interpretation of the current study results. This study highlights that while there is strong awareness of the OHS Act 85 of 1993 (>90%) among university staff, significant gaps exist in the communication and enforcement (5%) of OHS policy, alongside the poor communication of hazards and risks (30%). Amongst other challenges are infrastructure maintenance (>35%), as well as the lack of standard operation procedures (>5%). To address some of these setbacks, the current study recommends enhancing policy communication, conducting regular hazard assessments, increasing training participation, and improving documentation practices. These steps aim to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the university’s OHSMS, ensuring a safer environment for all stakeholders.
... This includes a clean, well-maintained workspace, ergonomic furniture, and good lighting. These factors can have a significant impact on employee comfort, which can translate into improved productivity levels (Delvika and Mustafa, 2019). Background: The XYZ furniture in Sleman Regency has three workstations: (1) Measuring and cutting, (2) Refining, and (3) Finishing. The production process in Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) still needs to implement OSH principles fully. Purpose: To determine how implementing occupational health and safety measures affects work motivation and productivity. Method: In this research, the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) method was used, and all six employees were involved in the production process, aged 22 to 32 years. Result: The research demonstrates a significant positive impact of OSH implementation on work motivation (t count = 3.477, p-value = 0.000), highlighting its substantial influence in enhancing employee motivation. Furthermore, a notable positive association is found between OSH implementation and work productivity (t count = 3.653, p-value = 0.000), confirming the significant contribution of OSH practices to overall work productivity improvement. Additionally, the investigation reveals that work motivation significantly influences increased work productivity (t count = 2.641, p-value = 0.008), underscoring the importance of cultivating motivation for enhancing workplace productivity. The highest influence value of the ten indicators (X24) is 9.18, which indicates work quality. Conclusion: The direct application of OSH substantially impacts on both work motivation and productivity. Moreover, a significant relationship is observed between work motivation and work productivity. Considering the utmost importance of work quality, improvements are recommended to enhance workstation design through a participatory ergonomics approach, and implementing the 5S concept in the furniture production area can effectively increase work quality.

This study investigates the impact of active learning on the acquisition of competencies and learning outcomes in the context of organic chemistry education. Specifically, this study focuses on the implementation of active learning in the extraction of an unknown mixture of organic compounds using acidic and basic solutions. This research is based on an “ex post facto” study involving 40 first-year undergraduate students who are pre-service chemistry teachers at a Slovak public university. This study aims to analyse students’ performance, identify common problems encountered, and assess the advantages and disadvantages of the active learning approach. The data collection instruments included a structured report on best practices in university education and a questionnaire to evaluate the experiences and assessment systems used. This study compares the effectiveness of online and face-to-face teaching methods for practical chemistry coursework. The key findings from the comparison of these methods are the differences in learning outcomes achieved, e.g., answers to tasks 2–6 from the questionnaire. Group B respondents had a higher number of correct responses and lower variability compared to Group A respondents. This difference may indicate an improvement in comprehension and effectiveness of instruction over the period. Differences in scores between the groups may be due to random variability in the composition of the groups, which we found through statistical analysis. Full-time students felt more engaged and more satisfied. More than half of the students said that they preferred face-to-face interactions to help them better understand the material. While online instruction provided greater flexibility and accessibility, students felt that they lacked hands-on interaction, which negatively impacted their acquisition of practical skills. The results indicate that active learning, particularly hands-on laboratory exercises, had a positive impact on the acquisition of professional competencies and students’ learning outcomes. This study also highlights the advantages of active learning in practical chemistry education.
