The famous 2006 Laplae rainfall-triggered landslide has caused hundreds of million Baht lost. The objective of this paper is to evaluate and to compare present geotechnical and geological conditions between the landslide area and landslide-free area to verify a landslide susceptibility map. Detailed field surveys acquired 14 samples: undisturbed, disturbed soils as well as rocks. Sensitivity and back-analysis were also performed. 35.44% of landslides occurred in meta-shale-greywacke-interbedding Formation, and another 64.56% happened in meta-greywacke-basaltic andesite Formation. The dominant slope of the landslide is in 30-40 degree slope, with aspects toward South direction, and in a range of <1,000 meters from geological structures. Landslide area is distinguished from the non-landslide area by its various grades of materials, lower quartz content, higher clay content, finer composition of parental rocks and soils, higher average ratio of smectite versus quartz, lower compressive strength, lower shear strength, lower angle of internal friction, lower cohesion value, more poorly graded, higher soil moisture, higher liquid limit and plasticity index, and factor of safety is generally less than 1. The result of the sensitivity analysis indicated that in a failure condition, the cohesion and angle of internal friction angle values are equal to 2.51 kPa and 13.70 degree , respectively. However, the results of laboratory tests showed that the cohesion and angle of internal friction values are equal to 8.59 kPa and 14.2 degree. These results verified the landslide susceptibility map that the high landslide susceptibility area has the engineering characteristics of the landslide-prone area, while the low susceptible one has the characteristics of the non-landslide area

In northern Iraq, countless non-abuse stream valleys can be used to store water for a variety of purposes; domestic, supplementary irrigation, and recharging groundwater. Bandawaya is one of the stream valleys, which form the first perspective has excellent quality. The location of the suggested dam has been evaluated by hydrological and geotechnical studies. Geotechnical studies included measurement of all the parameters related to the rock mass classification for evaluation based on four classification systems, which are the Q-System, the rock mass rating (RMR), the geological strength index (GSI), and the rock mass index (RMi). The classification results indicated that the rocks of the valley are good for constructing a dam on them, with some weak zones that may affect the integrity of the dam, which the study recommended treating before starting the construction of the dam. According to preliminary studies on different dam’s heights the qualification demonstrates an excellent choice of the site. Four stream orders are recognized, dendritic pattern in the southern part of the watershed, and trellised in the northern part. Three heights assumed to the proposed dam 450, 460, 470 m a.s.l. with 640,764; 3429,787; 8,590,763 m3 storage capacity respectively. According to the Q-System, the RMR, the GSI, and the RMi, the rock mass of the study area is evaluated. The findings illustrate the excellent selection by geotechnical, hydrological, and engineering features of the dam place.

Abstract The Xishan coal mine area in Beijing, China has a long history of mining. Many landslide hazards, in addition to collapses and ground fractures, have occurred in this area. This study used multi-temporal satellite images to extract this region’s deformation information, identify landslides and analyze the deformation evolution process of these landslides. Taking the Anzigou ditch as an example, we investigate the “Quarry–Landslide–Mudslide” disaster chain model. We found that the landslide evolution process is closely related to the geological conditions, and usually goes through four stages: initial deformation, slope front swelling and collapsing, rear part connecting and rupturing, and landslide creeping. The surface deformation can be identified and tracked by high-resolution optical images and InSAR monitoring. Under the combined effects of rainfall and topographic conditions, medium and large landslides may occur and trigger a “Quarry–Landslide–Mudflow” disaster chain. The identification and analysis of these landslide hazards and the disaster chain help with geological disaster prevention, and provide reference for early identification and research of similar disasters.
