Background Although there is a wide use of wild edible plants (WEPs) in Ethiopia, very little work has so far been done, particularly, in the Tigray Region, northern Ethiopia, to properly document the associated knowledge. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to document knowledge and analyze data related to the use of wild edible and nutraceutical plants in Raya-Azebo District of Tigray Region. The district was prioritized for the study to avoid the further loss of local knowledge and discontinuation of the associated practices because of the depletion of wild edible plants in the area mainly due to agricultural expansion and largely by private investors. Methods A cross-sectional ethnobotanical study was carried out in the study District to collect data through individual interviews held with purposively selected informants, observation, market surveys, and ranking exercises. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were employed to analyze and summarize the data using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16. Results The study documented 59 WEPs, the majority of which (57.63%) were sought for their fruits. Most of the WEPs (49 species) were consumed in the autumn, locally called qewei, which includes the months of September, October, and November. Ziziphus spina-christi L. Desf., Balanites aegyptiaca (L.) Del. and Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Miller were the most preferred WEPs. Both interviews and local market surveys revealed the marketability of Opuntia ficus-indica, Ziziphus spina-christi, Ficus vasta Forssk., Ficus sur Forssk., and Balanites aegyptiaca. Of the total WEPs, 21 were reported to have medicinal (nutraceutical) values, of which Balanites aegyptiaca and Acacia etbaica scored the highest rank order priority (ROP) values for their uses to treat anthrax and skin infections, respectively. Conclusions The current investigation demonstrated the wide use of WEPs in the district. In future nutritional composition analysis studies, priority should be given to the most popular WEPs, and nutraceutical plants with the highest ROP values.

For decades, indigenous people of rural regions have been consuming wild edible plants as food and medicines. Wild edible plants are neglected and underutilized food plants whose utilization is only restricted to a specific location. It is also referred as Future Smart Foods . Nutritional analysis can provide valuable insights into the potentiality of native wild edible plants as sustainable and nutritious food source. This study aims to analysis the proximate and elemental composition, and antioxidant activity of underutilized and neglected plants in Tripura. In our findings, relatively high carbohydrate, protein and fats content was observed in Oroxylum indicum (13.34±0.29), Trachyspermum roxburghianum (10.43±0.19) and Flacourtia indica (4.25±0.28) respectively. The highest Total energy was recorded in Flacourtia indica (107.97 Kcal). The highest moisture and ash content was observed in Alpinia nigra (94.95%) and Trachyspermum roxburghianum (42.16%) respectively. The quantitative concentration (Wt %) of six micronutrients (Mg, P, K, Ca, Fe and Cl) reveals that the highest was observed in potassium (K) i.e. 34.15% (34.15 mg/gm) in S. pennata . The free radical scavenging activity of the ethanolic extracts showed that L. leucocephala possessed high antioxidant activity (IC 50 =125.4±1.78). The nutritional values may be helpful for these underutilized crops to encourage future conservation plans and assess the level of dietary supplement dependency of the local communities. Therefore by promoting the cultivation and consumption of underutilized crops, we can support local communities and accomplish sustainable development in food security.

The study aims to determine the types of edible wild plants and fruits consumed in the culinary cultures of Yozgat and Sivas, their ethnobotanical characteristics, and the areas and forms of their uses. In the research, document analysis and semi-structured interviews were used as data collection techniques, and descriptive analysis was used as the data analysis method. The categories obtained as a result of the interview findings and the literature review consist of the areas of the uses of edible wild plants and fruits in the kitchen, their use patterns, their relationship with health, and the methods of cultivating and preserving edible wild plants and fruits. Research findings indicate that the tradition of using edible wild plants and fruits is still alive in Yozgat and Sivas.

El uso de plantas silvestres en la dieta de los pueblos originarios y rurales lleva consigo un conocimiento en muchos casos ancestral, que es parte de su patrimonio cultural. El estado de Aguascalientes no cuenta con un estudio enfocado únicamente a la flora silvestre comestible. El objetivo del presente estudio fue generar un listado de las especies de plantas silvestres comestibles utilizadas en el estado de Aguascalientes, además de identificar las estructuras utilizadas, la forma de consumo y nivel de aprovechamiento. De enero 2019 a octubre 2021 se entrevistó un total de 103 personas con un rango de edades de 32 a 95 años en 26 poblados del estado, además se visitaron tianguis y mercados de todas las capitales municipales para identificar las especies comercializadas. Se identificaron 67 especies de plantas silvestres que se utilizan como comestibles en el estado de Aguascalientes, de las cuales 25 son comercializadas, las principales estructuras consumidas son los frutos, tallos y hojas. La flora silvestre comestible es un recurso económico y alimenticio importante para la población de Aguascalientes y algunas especies se utilizan en platillos o dulces típicos que son parte de las tradiciones y herencia cultural del estado.

El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar el mejor solvente de extracción de antocianinas de los frutos de B. humbertiana y B. boliviana y evaluar el pH, color y actividad antioxidante de los yogures a los cuales se incorporó el extracto liofilizado de ambas especies. La extracción de las antocianinas se realizó con solventes de grado alimentario como etanol y agua acidificados con ácido cítrico. Los extractos etanólicos 96 acidificados con ácido cítrico (pH 3,5) y liofilizados de ambas especies de berberis fueron incorporados a muestras de yogurt comercial a las concentraciones de 80 y 100 mg/50 g de yogurt, determinándose que mantienen el pH ácido, logran una coloración muy similar a los yogures comerciales con una diferencia global de color (ΔE) menor a 10 y tienen mayor actividad antioxidante.

Demand for more attractive and high quality food is growing every day. The increasing interest in functional foods and nutraceuticals has exaggerated exploration into new foods that have positive effects on human wellbeing. Even more we see edible flowers as a new way of nutritional health. Edible flowers are non-poisonous, giving any dish new colour, texture and freshness, and apart from the "alluring" factor, they are potential sources of phytochemicals. Various phytochemicals such as flavonoids, anthocyanins, carotenoids and phenolics are responsible for health promoting effects of edible flowers. Novel evidence regarding the composition and health benefits of edible flowers is imperative and epitomizes an ample cause for their ingestion. However, due to short blossoming period or most of the flowers are consumed by local people as food and medicine. There have been few attempts to use edible flowers, but remaining are still unexplored and need to be exploited in order to attain food and nutritional security and to upsurge the work opportunities for rural people. Hence, to accomplish this, the present review article was aimed to present the research work on edible flowers such as various species of edible flowers, nutritional and phytochemical composition, health benefits of edible flowers, traditional usage, pre and post-harvest technology, functional food products incorporated with edible flowers, marketing and toxicological aspects. This article helps to popularize the edible flowers among consumers and food industry which are very potent source of nutraceutical compounds.
