... To assess trait mindfulness and effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs), many mindfulness-based assessment tools have been developed and validated (Krägeloh et al., 2019;Medvedev et al., 2022). According to a recent bibliometric analysis by Baminiwatta and Solangaarachchi (2021), one of the most widely used assessment tools in the studies related to mindfulness is the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ; Baer et al., 2006). The FFMQ was originally developed and validated on a population consisting of both meditators and nonmeditators in the United States (Baer et al., 2006). ...

We aimed to elucidate the effects of “dose” of a single-session of mindfulness meditation on state mindfulness and affect as well as moderators of effects. 372 adults recruited remotely via Amazon’s MTurk platform were randomly assigned to either a: 10-min mindfulness meditation, 20-min mindfulness meditation, 10-min control, or 20-min control. Control conditions were recordings of a National Geographic article. Primary outcomes were changes in state mindfulness, anxiety, and negative and positive affect. Moderator variables included neuroticism, trait mindfulness, and prior meditation experience. Collapsing across doses, participants in mindfulness conditions reported greater increases in state mindfulness than in control conditions. There was a greater increase in state mindfulness in the 10-min mindfulness condition versus 10-min control condition. There were no differences between 10- and 20-min mindfulness conditions. Exploratory moderation analyses indicated that meditation (10 or 20) versus control (10 or 20) predicted increased state mindfulness among participants with lower trait mindfulness. Additionally, 20-min versus 10-min meditation predicted greater decreases in state anxiety among individuals with high trait mindfulness. Dose–response relationships were minimal, suggesting that 10 and 20 min of meditation may improve state mindfulness comparably. Findings support the benefits of brief mindfulness meditation and suggest that trait mindfulness moderates certain outcomes.
... Finally, it is worth noting that the mindfulness measure used in this study is not without criticism. Despite being one of the most commonly cited measures of mindfulness [107], some items tend to vary with meditation experience [108], indicating that the factor structure of the FFMQ may vary depending on sample. This ultimately calls into question what the true underlying structure of the FFMQ is. ...

Mindfulness-informed interventions (MIIs) are increasingly common but have not been extensively studied among families with elevated levels of risk (e.g., those involved in child protective services and/or receiving financial assistance). These families often experience high rates of stressors that can impact coping strategies, interpersonal dynamics, and relationships. Given that mindfulness has been shown to promote health and wellbeing, this study used a sample from two pilot randomized controlled trials to test the extent to which a mindfulness-informed intervention improved coping strategies and perceptions of children’s behavior among 53 families with elevated risk. A principal components analysis with a direct oblimin rotation revealed that cognitive–emotion coping strategies could be characterized by three factors: positive adaptation, negative adaptation, and positive refocusing. Intention-to-treat analysis indicated significant group by time differences, with intervention participants demonstrating improvements in positive refocusing coping, positive adaptation coping, and perceptions of children’s behavior problems compared to participants in the waitlist control group. No significant differences were found for negative adaptation coping strategies. Findings provide preliminary support for the benefits of mindfulness training in a sample generally underrepresented in the mindfulness intervention literature.
... Different bibliometric studies were also conducted in the field of mindfulness. For instance, Baminiwatta and Solangaarachchi (2021) used bibliometric methods to present historical developments, active areas of research, and emerging trends in the previously published literature on mindfulness. Another bibliometric study gave an in-depth understanding of the history of mindfulness and identified the trends in the articles published in the field (Toniolo-Barrios et al. 2020). ...

This paper presents a systematic review update regarding mindfulness theories applied to tourism, complemented with a bibliometric analysis. Scientific studies listed in the WOS, SCOPUS, PubMed and PsycInfo databases were analysed using PRISMA guidelines. Twenty-five studies were selected for review from 670 records identified. In recent years, mindfulness has proved to be a promising area of research in tourism, and the number of published studies is increasing. The findings reveal a positive association between mindful-ness and tourism experiences, suggesting that tourists who adopt states of mindfulness during their travels benefit from increased pro-environmental behaviours, satisfaction levels, and memorable experiences, leading to destination loyalty. This study provides an in-depth overview of the literature, and helps redress the lack of bibliometric studies in this field. It also identifies common areas of current research interest, offers insights into commonly studied themes, and seeks to raise awareness about the relevance of the concept of mind-fulness in tourist experiences and well-being by suggesting implications for research and tourism management.
... For over half a century, there has been a continued exponential surge in the worldwide interest in mindfulness as a concept and a religious or secular intervention for its beneficial attributes (Baminiwatta & Solangaarachchi, 2021). This has led to the development of a range of mindfulness assessment tools to assess the construct and efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) in reducing psychological distress and improving well-being, among clinical and non-clinical populations, across settings and cultures (Krägeloh et al., 2019;Park et al., 2013). ...

Objectives The current study was conducted to translate and validate the short version of the Kentucky Inventory of Mindfulness Skills (KIMS-Short) for the Chinese mental health population to examine the association between mindfulness and personal recovery. Method A sample of 434 community mental health service users completed the Chinese KIMS-Short and measures of self-compassion, psychological distress, and personal recovery. Results Results from the first- and second-order confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the five-factor structure proposed by previous research. Validity and internal consistency reliability of the 17-item Chinese KIMS-Short (KIMS-17) were evident. As measured by KIMS-17, mindfulness had moderate to strong correlations with self-compassion, stress, depression, anxiety, and personal recovery measures. Participants with experience in contemplation scored significantly higher overall and in all domains of mindfulness and personal recovery measures than those without experience. Additionally, participants who regularly engaged in contemplative practices scored significantly higher overall and in all domains of mindfulness and personal recovery measures, except for the describing mindfulness skill, compared to those who did not engage in practices. Conclusions The KIMS-17 is an appropriate brief and multidimensional mindfulness measure for people with mental illness, regardless of their level of experience in contemplative practice. Engaging in contemplative practices, whether rarely or frequently, may contribute to improvement in mindfulness and facilitate personal recovery.
... Mental health problems have lost some of their stigma, in part because they have become more common, and mindfulness, which is rooted in Buddhist satipatthana practice, has gone from a fringe activity, akin to many alternative therapies, to something more mainstream. The number of research articles featuring the word 'mindfulness' has increased exponentially, (Baminiwatta, A. and Solangaarachchi, I, 2021) and interventions such as Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) have become available through the NHS and privately. More diffusely, hundreds of millions of people have downloaded a meditation app and iPhone users can log their mindful moments alongside the time they spend exercising. ...

Background and Objective Immunization holds profound research significance and promising application potential in the realm of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Regrettably, only a paucity of bibliometric data has been dedicated to a systematic examination of this domain. The present study endeavors to holistically assess the research landscape encompassing immunization and allied concepts in HNSCC. It shall encompass an exhaustive review of countries, institutions, authors, and journals involved in this sphere, while also evaluating the knowledge framework through keyword co-occurrence analysis. Methods The method employed for subject retrieval involved accessing the Web of Science core collection to obtain works and reviews concerning HNSCC immunity. Subsequently, bibliometric analysis was conducted utilizing the CiteSpace and VOSviewer software. Results Between 1 January 2012 and 31 October 2022, a total of 1,744 English works and reviews were considered in the analysis. The research contributions emanated from 402 institutions, primarily from 57 countries and regions. In terms of journals, CANCERS published the highest number of works, other journals in the fields of molecular biology, biological immunology, and clinical medicine also made substantial contributions.Over the course of time, the landscape of research hotspots gracefully evolved. Certain illustrious terms such as “open label”, “t cell”, “immunotherapy”, and “tumor microenvironment” elegantly emerged, gracing the scholarly stage with their profound frequency. Conclusion This study presents a thorough and all-encompassing assessment of HNSCC research within the context of immunity, achieved through the utilization of bibliometric and visualization methodologies. By offering insights into the dynamic evolution of immune-related concepts in HNSCC, this paper will undoubtedly aid researchers in gaining a deeper understanding of this complex domain.

Background: Meditation, including Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBI), is a required Complementary and Integrative Health intervention at the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Training VA clinicians to provide MBI at scale must address fidelity concerns and the assessment of clinician competency. Objective: The psychometric properties of the Mindfulness-Based Intervention: Teaching Assessment Criteria (MBI:TAC), a widely used tool for assessing facilitator competence, continue to be explored. To support the dissemination of MBI, the utility of using the MBI:TAC for self-assessment for clinicians in a national training program was evaluated. Methods: In a training cohort of VA clinicians (n = 39), participant self evaluations on 2 domains of the MBI:TAC are compared to the competency scores of 2 expert evaluators as based on the observations of a 10-minute exercise. Additionally, the inter-rater reliability between the 2 experts was explored. Results: Intraclass Correlation for the 2 expert evaluators for Guiding Practice was significant (ρ = .83, P = .003), but was not significant for Embodiment of Mindfulness (ρ = .34, P = .186). Self-evaluation scores were not significantly correlated to expert rater scores such that participants rate their level of competence higher than expert scores. Conclusion: The MBI:TAC, while an essential tool in teacher training, may not produce accurate scores when used for self-assessment. Instruction from a senior teacher is needed for accurate scoring. Interrater reliability may be improved with enhanced domain operationalization and training. Implications for MBI training are explored.
... From our perspective, there is a range of reasons to develop and distribute alternative religious-derived meditative programs and interventions, beyond the Buddhist-derived options that currently dominate public health. First, although Buddhist-influenced mindfulness has seen a steady rise in publications, mostly in psychology and psychiatry (Baminiwatta & Solangaarachchi, 2021), the two most prevalent religions, worldwide, are Christianity and Islam (Pew Research Center, 2017). Because of this, the promotion of meditative practices for global public health should involve greater worldview sensitivity. ...

In this commentary on “Mindfulness for Global Public Health: Critical Analysis and Agenda,” the authors affirm Oman’s emphasis on the need for alternative religious-derived meditative programs and interventions, placed alongside Buddhist-derived mindfulness, for global public health. To begin, we highlight areas of agreement with Oman, then provide a metaphor we believe fittingly captures the current dilemma faced by those ambitiously attempting to globalize mindfulness for public health. Next, we advocate for the decentering of mindfulness, via developing and distributing evidence-based meditative practices derived from other religions, so public health strategies can be more diverse for global consumption. To do so, we offer examples from our own efforts to operationalize and experimentally investigate meditative and contemplative practices housed within the millennia-old Christian religious tradition for contemporary Christian communities experiencing psychological and spiritual suffering. Such examples include contemplation within the classic Medieval work The Cloud of Unknowing, the Jesus Prayer in Eastern Orthodox Christianity, Puritan meditation in Protestant Christianity, and Ignatian meditation and contemplation in Catholic Christianity. To conclude, we offer basic steps for the further development of such alternative religious-derived meditative practices, along with a more detailed account of a recent empirical study of our own. Overall, our hope is to promote greater meditative diversity in the noble pursuit of global public health, with mindfulness offered alongside a plethora of other religious meditative practices, which can provide local communities around the world with a broader range of worldview-dependent and -sensitive options.
... The effects of mindfulness-based programs (MBPs) have been, and continue to be, evaluated across a broad and increasingly diverse range of health issues in both clinical and healthy populations (Baminiwatta & Solangaarachchi, 2021;Zhang et al., 2021). These include, but are not limited to, such diverse areas as substance use disorders, eating behaviors, tobacco smoking, chronic illnesses, education, and the gamut of psychiatric conditions in children, adolescents, and adults (Krägeloh et al., 2019;Schuman-Olivier et al., 2020;Schutt & Felver, 2021;Singh & Singh Joy, 2021). ...

Objectives The objective of this study was to examine the effects of Mindfulness-Based Positive Behavior Support (MBPBS) training on the nature of caregiver and client reciprocal interactions at a moment-by-moment level using behavior analytic methodology. Specifically, we compared the behavior of caregivers and clients before and after MBPBS training for the caregivers in terms of caregiver-client engagement, percent of learning and leisure interactions during caregiver-client engagement, and percent of the clients’ challenging behaviors and socially acceptable behaviors during learning and leisure interactions. In addition, we examined the effects of specific conditionality of attentional responses of the caregivers to the clients’ challenging or socially acceptable behavior in terms of frequency, latency, duration, and quality. Method Caregiver and client engagements were videotaped before and after MBPBS training for the caregivers. The percent of caregiver-client engagement was analyzed using partial-interval recording for overall engagement and the clients’ challenging behaviors and socially acceptable behaviors during learning and leisure interactions. The effects of the caregivers’ attentional responses to the clients’ challenging behaviors and socially acceptable behaviors were analyzed using whole-interval recording. Results Training caregivers in MBPBS significantly increased caregiver-client engagement during learning and leisure activities, which resulted in the clients exhibiting fewer challenging behaviors and more socially appropriate behaviors. Furthermore, an analysis of the effects of different types of caregiver attention showed differential effects on the clients’ challenging behaviors and socially acceptable behaviors. Conclusions The results indicated that behavior analytic methods can be used as an objective and reliable way of capturing the nature of changes in predefined behaviors of both caregivers and clients at a moment-by-moment level following training of the caregivers in a mindfulness-based program. Using such an analytic method may provide an effective way of objectively measuring some experiential processes involved in mindfulness training.
