... increasing focus on mindfulness and sustainable behavior issues, their connection with sustainable buildings is still ambiguous. For example, current literature about mindfulness in journal publications is shown in Figure 1 [36]. According to American Mindfulness Research Association (AMRA) database, there is a residual trend on mindfulness research since mid-1980s, and an immediate growth of the number of studies about mindfulness, especially for last decade [36]. ...

... Even though architecture tends to foster a state of mindfulness, explicit knowledge of architecture designed for mindfulness remains scarce [41,42]. Prior to this, we conducted a systematic literature review to gather scholarly knowledge regarding architecture and mindfulness, revealing a significant hiatus in this field [43]. ...
... The "AND" operator is utilized to search specifically for articles that contain both "architecture" and "attention". The term "mindfulness" is not included in the search query due to a lack of related studies, which could result in overly narrow outcomes [41,42]. ...
... COVID-19 has exacerbated individuals' mental health [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] and consequently heightened interest in mindfulness as a solution to mental illness problems [19][20][21][22]. Although previous studies have identified certain strategies to promote mindfulness through architecture, related studies remain limited [41][42][43][44]. However, since mindfulness is a multidimensional construct [45][46][47], promoting mindfulness indirectly through attention may be feasible. ...

Attention is a pivotal component and a central vehicle of mindfulness, a psychological factor improving mental health. Despite architecture’s potential to encourage attention and mindfulness, there is still a research gap. This study aimed to investigate architectural design strategies that promotes attention in order to foster mindfulness. The research was carried out in three primary stages. The first step entailed conducting a systematic review by searching publications related to architecture that promotes attention from Scopus in February 2024. After considering the suitability and accessibility, 32 articles were included. No studies were found to have investigated the field of enhancing mindfulness. The second step utilized content analysis to decode the selected articles using a framework developed from literature reviews. All three coders decoded the data independently, allowing the main researcher to compile it into the final dataset. Finally, the data underwent Python meta-analysis for word frequency and association. The result revealed certain qualities that help achieve attention through architecture. The architectural atmosphere is most effective when it features natural forms and spaces that evoke a sense of enclosure. The lighting should emphasize natural light and uniformity, whereas the sound designs primarily concern acoustics, ambient, and noises, with controlled weather emphasizing air aspects. The building should utilize natural materials and incorporate object elements; the facade and entrance are particularly crucial components. Moreover, the colors of brick and green and views encompassing gardens and vegetation are among the qualities mentioned. Based on the analysis, the material, view, and color features were most congruent with the biophilic design concept. All these factors are expected to foster mindfulness, thereby improving mental health.
... To increase sustainability in consumption patterns in buildings, there has been a growing body of research investigating the psychological underpinnings of behavior [9]. Ecopsychologists have paid significant attention to mindfulness as a psychological construct of disrupting automatic routines, reinforcing non-materialistic values, enhancing awareness, and encouraging pro-social values and behavior [10][11][12] as well as pro-environmental behavior [13][14][15][16][17]. ...
... Mindfulness is a psychological construct with a significant role in promoting sustainability in architecture, which is gaining interest in a variety of disciplines [10,[18][19][20] due to its potential to human environmentally friendly behavior [16,[21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28]. Several studies report a positive interrelation between mindfulness and sustainable behavior, environmental behavior [28][29][30][31], mindful consumption [32], sustainable consumption [5,11], environmental consumption, also water and energy sustainable consumption [33][34][35][36]. ...
... Some studies show the potential of architectural atmosphere to influence human psychological factors such as mindfulness [48,49]. However, the systematic literature review of architecture fostering mindfulness about sustainability emphasizes that the discrete areas of knowledge between the architectural atmosphere and mindfulness are still widely unknown as previous studies [10,18,50]. ...

Mindfulness is a psychological construct that enhances sustainable behaviors, environmental behavior, environmental consumption, mindful consumption, and water and energy sustainable consumption. The state of mindfulness can be affected by the determinator of the physical environment as architecture via the architectural atmosphere. The previous studies show that the discrete areas of knowledge between architecture and mindfulness are still widely unknown. However, image-centered social media platforms such as Instagram seem to be able to provide big data for studying people’s perceptions of architecture. Thus, this study aims to describe the concept design and characteristics of architectural atmosphere in architecture images tagged mindfulness posted to Instagram. A coding framework developed from a previous systematic literature review was conducted for this content analysis. A total of 354 architectural images were screened, coded, and analyzed by five architects. The results highlight that the Japanese traditional architecture (59.20%) looks to be the most architectural atmosphere concept that influences mindfulness, following by Biophilic Design (33.05%), and Buddhist contemplative space (20.06%). In addition, it was found that the most common architectural atmosphere characteristic fostering mindfulness performed calm space (73.58%), focus object (54.45%), concrete material (85.71%), hue color (78.17%), hard light and shadow (78.98%), and view with a tree (60.11%).
... From the literature review, it was found that discrete areas of knowledge between architecture and mindfulness still exist [41]. Meanwhile, a previous study suggested that construction professionals should consider the green mindfulness concept when designing sustainable architecture as an agent [42]. This study aims to fill in these gaps. ...
... State mindfulness can be affected by both individual and environmental characteristics [32,33], and people connect to architecture, which is one of the physical environments [1,34]. As green mindfulness is a state of conscious awareness [31], it tends to be able to be fostered by external stimuli, such as architecture [32,42]. ...
... By considering green mindfulness and its relevance to architecture through its root mindfulness, which tends to be promoted through architecture as a state of mind, it has been found that, despite there being few studies on green mindfulness, in recent years, there has been rapid growth in studies on mindfulness [42,59,60]. ...

Green mindfulness seems to play an important role in promoting sustainability in architecture, but discrete areas of knowledge are still widely unknown. This study aimed to explore the publications that exist on the nexus between green mindfulness and architecture, and to find the architectural features that tend to foster green mindfulness. The study conducted a systematic literature review by searching publications from databases including Scopus, Google Scholar, and Thai Journals Online in September 2022. Five authors—one architectural researcher, two architectural professors, and two architects—independently reviewed the full-length articles to confirm their accuracy and objectivity. Eight articles were selected for examination by descriptive analysis showing the publication year, source, and citations of the articles. Thematic analysis was used to find the characteristics of the architectural atmosphere with the potential for fostering green mindfulness. Finally, only one study was found that was truly concerned with architecture and green mindfulness. This publication showed that mass and volume are associated with biophilic design, fascination with biophilic design, and affiliation with biophilic design. Material and object refer to natural material; light is in reference to natural light; and landscape and viewpoint suggest plants, greenery, and natural views, while details regarding color and sound were not explored.
... In bringing together conceptualizations of sustainability and mindfulness, there are a limited number of studies that examine both concepts (Tezel and Giritli 2017). Whilst some studies make the business case for fostering mindful consumption practices (Belz and Peattie 2010;Jackson 2004;Thøgersen and Schrader 2012), few (if any) acknowledge how to bring about sustainable behaviour change. ...

To encourage greater sustainability regarding apparel consumption practices, policymakers have traditionally focused on economic and/or social psychology frameworks which rely on information-based campaigns to achieve behavioural change. Whilst such campaigns have had limited success and received significant criticism, additional policy solutions are called for. In contrast to conventional behavioural change strategies, this study responds to calls for further methodological insight and explores the potential of creative methods such as upcycling workshops and contemplative theatre performance, as practice-based mechanisms to engender a greater understanding of the environmental impact of apparel consumption and help bring about behavioural change to current apparel consumption practice. Via the theoretical lens of behavioural change theory and contemplative performance practice, our findings reveal the dynamic and continuously reshaping nature of the apparel market, in that most of our participants were until recently unaware of the unsustainable nature of the apparel industry. Despite some participants citing barriers, such as a lack of time, peer pressure, and the desire to express a specific social identity, reactions to practice-based methods were overwhelmingly positive. Thus, initiating a more proactive engagement with sustainability issues as well as increased reflection and discussion on how they might modify current apparel consumption behaviours in the future. We conclude by making suggestions for policymakers regarding future sustainability initiatives.
