The rapid rise of New Media has enabled society to share information through Information and Communication Technology (ICT). It has become a vital tool for information dissemination, leading to the emergence of a Media Literate. New Media has also evolved into a platform for sharing civic knowledge, addressing social issues, and engaging in civic activities, commonly known as "Civic Engagement." Young people, in particular, have been instrumental in leveraging platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram for Civic Engagement. For this, a survey of 450 university students in Punjab, Pakistan, was conducted. The results indicate that these students actively use New Media for various Civic Engagement activities, including fundraising, political involvement, advocacy campaigns, and social innovations. The empirical evidence suggests a strong correlation between increased use of New Media platforms for Civic Engagement by university students and a subsequent increase in Civic Engagement across society as a whole.

Pike and Ryan have explained that there are three components: socio-psychological, the affective part is the emotional aspect, the cognitive part is the intellectual aspect, and the conative is the functional aspect related to the customs and will to act (Adhiarso & Suyanto, 2018). Bagyo's role is quite important in the story's narrative as Eni is able to find out about Eddy's lies that are accidentally recorded by Tuti, who is also a YouTuber, as well as the daughter of the Hajj souvenir shop through Bagyo. ...

The research aimed to find out how the narrative and language signs of Hajj correlate with social issues in the Mecca I’m Coming movie. In Indonesian society, Hajj, as one of the Islamic pillars, was not only associated with religious values but also socio-cultural aspects. The research employed a textual approach, incorporating two analytical theories: narrative structure and semiotic signification. The narrative structure model by Lacey and Gilespie was used to ascertain the narrative structure, while Ferdinand de Saussure’s concept of signification was applied to investigate the meanings of the research object. Stuart Hall’s circuit of culture, referred to as the framework analysis model, deepens the study of the research data. The research data were visuals and verbal information related to Hajj and its connection with social issues. The result shows that the object has equilibrium, disruption, disruption (complication), climax, disequilibrium, and new equilibrium narrative structure. The correlation of Hajj and the social issues featured in the film is (1) Hajj as social status; (2) the portrayal of Hajj status as a favored choice for marriage that intensifies in the unfolding of the story’s plot, leading to conflicts and complex situation; lastly (3) the issues of the social media phenomena in the community that appears in a secondary plot in the story through two figures; Bagyo and Tuti.

Furthermore, Web-based applications are classified into different categories, including document-centric, interactive, transactional, work-flow, collaborative, portal-oriented, etc. As a Web-based application, social media allows anybody to build a profile or a personal site, make a list of friends, collaborate and engage with others to communicate information, publicly voice criticism and ideas and share materials (Adhiarso and Suyanto, 2018;Bartlett-Bragg, 2006;Boyd and Ellison, 2007;Lietsala and Sirkkunen, 2008;Tiryakioglu and Erzurum, 2011). Purpose This paper aims to evaluate Web-based applications for teaching critical media literacy. It proposes modeling for criteria to evaluate Web-based applications for critical media literacy learning. The study aims to critically analyze the applications based on their potential for critical media literacy learning (CMLL), learner compatibility, authenticity, beneficial impact, practicability, engagement and support. Design/methodology/approach The paper was addressed by the walkthrough method, which provides underpinning analysis of the applications combined with content analysis to gain further deeper insight into users’ applications and application appropriation to accommodate critical media literacy instructions. The applications are organized according to their utilization in each sort of CMLL, namely, media understanding and analysis, and media production. Findings The paper describes how to select appropriate applications for critical media literacy instruction. It suggests a list of applications that can help teachers integrate critical media literacy into their classroom instruction, as well as the results of each application’s evaluation. In summary, the results indicated the importance of meticulous selection criteria and evaluations of applications used for critical media literacy integration in teaching. Research limitations/implications Because technology and applications are constantly evolving, ongoing research in this area is always required. Furthermore, researchers are encouraged to test the proposed hypotheses further. Practical implications The paper discusses the implications for technology selection in teaching, the development of selection criteria and managing the balance between technological advancement and teaching. In a nutshell, this paper practically contribute to shed light on the framework for CMLL application selection and adoption. Social implications The paper provides comprehensive guidance for teachers on how to select applications for critical media literacy integration teaching, as well as lists of application evaluations that they can easily use. Originality/value This paper fills a gap in the literature by investigating how digital media and technologies can be used in the classroom and how they are chosen based on the needs of teachers and students.

Media and health literacy are important dimensions that shape health and social behaviors among children and young people. Understanding the factors associated with media health literacy (MHL) is imperative to effectively promote healthy behaviors. This study performed a review, with systematic search, to determine the influential factors associated with MHL among children and young people. The authors searched Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed and Thai Journal Online database for English and Thai language articles, from inception until December, 2020. Of 1,479 articles identified, 1,297 were screened by title and abstract, and 209 full-texts were screened for inclusion criteria of the review. Eight articles, which reported associated factors with MHL for a target population of persons under age 25 years, were included in the analysis. The results show that children and young peoples' MHL was associated with individual factors, e.g., gender, age, education, stress, communication skill, media use, and healthy lifestyle factors, whilst the associated environmental factors are parental attributes and key informants of health information. Factors associated with MHL identified in this study may assist policymakers in appropriately creating interventions for promoting children and youth's MHL and, thus, healthy behaviors and future risk reduction.

The advancement of technology and communication has been impressively rapid. That are where emerging cybercrime technologies were born. Cyberspace activities involve the use of Internet users. One of them is a frequent social media user, which allows for communication interactions to take place without the need for face-to-face meetings. The Internet and social media, in addition to having a positive impact on users, also have a negative impact. One of them is a type of crime that is currently prevalent, namely digital cybercrime, which is a crime committed by varied individuals in order to deceive the target using data/information from the victim's social media account. Furthermore, in the current era of the Covid-19 pandemic, many victims have received fraud, such as spam calls and SMS, from people who use various methods to persuade, usually using the victim's family as tactic and overdue in loan payments as trap, and the number of these victims is growing. This study used a comparative study to examine the effectiveness of the Truecaller application in assisting smartphone users who are disturbed by continuous terror by using calls and Spam SMS, as well as overcoming victims' concerns.

The study has aimed to investigate the factors affecting university students’ attitude toward intention to use social media for learning. This study embraced a cross-sectional approach and gathered quantitative data via a Google form survey, which was collected by using social media platforms, from a total of 720 respondents. The hypotheses were tested using the partial least squares (PLS) method. The study found that social media literacy, perceived ease of use, perceived behavioral control, and perceived risk has significant positive influence on users’ attitude to use social media, while ICT facility and perceived usefulness has no significant impact on attitude. Users’ attitude has a significant relationship with their intention to use social media for learning. The users’ attitude was also found to successfully mediate the relationship of social media literacy, perceived ease of use, perceived behavioral control, and perceived risk with intention to use social media. Social media literacy and perceived risk have been measured as an influential construct since it is unreasonable to anticipate the correlation between social media literacy and perceived risk dimensions in social media.
