Studies on the adoption of innovations by companies generally include micro-level and meso-level variables in order to explain a company's receptiveness to innovations. This study adds to the literature by investigating the role of macro-level variables (i.e. national culture) to explain differences in innovation penetration levels and adoption dec...

... scores on the Hofstede dimensions were based on Hofstede's IBM study (Hofstede, 2001). The scores on Hall's cultural dimensions were based on a study by Morden (1999) that ranked a number of countries worldwide on Hall's cultural dimensions, as shown in Tables 2 and 3. We used this ranking by giving a score to the various categories of countries, ranging from very low (=1) to very high (=16) context, from very monochronic (=1) to very polychronic (=20). ...

... data set includes three high context cultures. Two out of these three are also characterized as polychronic cultures, according to the categorization between low and high, and between monochronic and polychronic as indicated in Tables 2 and 3. The results of t-tests show that the low context and monochronic cultures have significantly higher ERP penetration levels than high context and polychronic cultures, which confirms hypotheses 6 and 7. Companies base their adoption decisions more on rational, economic arguments, and rely less on emotions. ...

... However, the strong link between the two seems well enough established to justify focussing only on the VAL ! INN relationship (Kaasa, 2013;Van Everdingen and Waarts, 2003) in this paper. Inglehart and Baker (2000) argued that the emergence of (generalised) trust is an important ingredient of a secular-rational value set resulting from periods of continuing economic prosperity. ...

Cultural values and social capital are important parts of the context that determines countries’ innovation performance (and, hence, economic development). This paper investigates the culture–innovation relationship in a European context, as well as the mediating role of the national-level trust in this connection. Data are used to test the hypotheses that a country’s innovation performance is influenced by its cultural value emphases and societal trust, and that the culture–innovation relationship is mediated by societal trust. Based on data from the Global Innovation Index and the European Social Survey covering 27 European countries, we find that innovation at the country level is positively correlated with the level of societal trust and with three cultural value dimensions: “Autonomy versus Embeddedness”, “Egalitarianism versus Hierarchy”, and “Harmony versus Mastery”. A multivariate SEM analysis reveals that when “Autonomy versus Embeddedness” is controlled, the two other cultural value dimensions are no longer significant. Further, a SEM path analysis confirms that the relationship between cultural values and innovation performances is completely mediated through the level of trust in a society. Overall, “Autonomy versus Embeddedness” has a stronger total effect than societal trust on a country’s innovation performance, but most of this effect is indirect, mediated through societal trust. Implications of our findings for the corporate level (i.e., entrepreneurs and managers) as well as for the institutional settings (i.e., policy makers) are discussed. It is suggested that for successful innovation to blossom, the actors on both levels should aim at strengthening the cultural emphasis on individual autonomy, institutional integrity and mutual trust.
... (J Guo et al. 2004) At the meantime, the development of ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system and SCM (Supply Chain Management) system rapidly pushed many firms form traditional market into digital market. As more and more companies in traditional market adopted ERP systems, the interoperation and collaboration between traditional markets and digital market have been vigorously increased (Everdingen & Waarts 2003). Therefore, many new companies which running traditional business have entered into digital market and became digital market facilitators. ...

The global COVID-19 pandemic has left an indelible impression on the world of education, where many countries had to approach this issue by conducting emergency remote teaching. These education responses to the pandemic, however, seemed to differ by country. In order to explore how countries responded to the pandemic in terms of K-12 education, this study investigated five countries, the Philippines, Egypt, Korea, Japan and the United States, through document analysis. The findings revealed several similarities and differences, such as the Philippines, Egypt and Japan initially struggling to implement remote emergency teaching due to the lack of ICT infrastructure while Korea and the United States swiftly transitioned to emergency remote teaching due to their readily available ICT infrastructure. These similarities and differences can be possibly explained by the Human Development Index (HDI) and Hofstede's 6 cultural dimensions of each country.

Two important characteristics of contemporary teamwork are working with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds and working in virtual teams. Hence, preparing students to successfully navigate through the business world must include developing these two skills. To investigate learning for both cross-cultural and virtual collaboration, we conducted a cross-cultural virtual team experiential exercise with 635 undergraduate students comprising 189 teams. The exercise was part of Organizational Behavior classes at three university campuses—two in the United States and one in Croatia. Data analysis examining skills development and efficacy demonstrated a significant increase in virtual team efficacy for all students and a significant increase in cross-cultural efficacy for students in Croatia. Qualitative results point to differences in key lessons learned between U.S. and Croatian students, such as communication skills, time management skills, and intensity of the experience. We provide a description of the exercise, lessons learned, and suggestions for future use, including adaptations to smaller class sizes.

Industry-wide information infrastructures (IIIS) have recently gained increased attention by policy makers, especially in the healthcare sector where it is believed that IIIS can substantially contribute to the taming of exploding healthcare costs and dramatically improve service quality, e.g., by avoiding widespread medication errors. However, the emergence and evolution of IIIS is as yet poorly understood, partly because the information systems (IS) literature traditionally uses much smaller units of analysis such as projects, organizations or small networks of organization. In this paper, we propose a combined company-level and industry-level framework to shed light on the process of IIIS emergence. We demonstrate, for the first time, that IIIS emergence is intricately linked to the industry life cycle for the case of fragmented industries. We also explore the relationship between the industry-level and company-level life cycles in the process of IIIS emergence, and develop a novel proposition regarding this relationship. Our findings suggest that current policy initiatives to promote the development of IIIS have not adequately taken industry-level conditions into consideration.
