This paper aims to explain the dynamics of balance of power between China and India in a historical perspective. We shall conduct case studies to demonstrate how China and India seek to counterbalance each other in three strategic geographical areas: South Asia, Southeast Asia and at the Indian Ocean Rim. In order to do so, we will examine variable...

Emerging powers from the global south have generally opposed the use of force in international politics. However, taking a closer look at the area of peacekeeping, the international community’s most institutionalized response to international insecurity, it is clear that the global south has been actively engaged in what has been described as peace...

Interrogation plays a crucial role in the military, and intelligence sphere, especially in the face of operations of an armed nature. The differentiation of interrogation due to its nature (procedural and evidentiary purpose or intelligence requirements (IRs)) opened up the opportunity for military personnel to polemicize on the competence and orga...

... As legatus of the Provincia Hispania Ulterior, Carisius was probably in charge in the western front during the conflict, and after defeating the Astures for the first time, he founded the city of Emerita Augusta to settle veterans of the V Alauda and X Gemina legions. It was there where this coinage was minted between 25 and 22 BC possibly to pay the troops for their services (García-Bellido 2004, 2006García-Bellido and Blásquez Cerrato 2001). ...

A new Roman military site was recently detected in Galicia, Spain, an area where the army presence had been challenging to trace until date. O Penedo dos Lobos is a playing-card shaped camp with very distinctive, fortified entrances. The archaeological survey conducted on this site in the summer of 2018 allowed us to recover some elements of Roman militaria, as well as numismatic evidence dating back to late 1st c. BC, thus suggesting a connection with the Cantabrian-Asturian Wars of Augustan times. However, there is still some uncertainty regarding the specific task undertaken by the military contingent that occupied this site. Besides its historical implications, a focus will be given to the methodology applied for the archaeological survey of this site. This has shed new light on the Roman military presence in Galicia, allowing its integration into wider European debates on Roman conquest and expansion.
... Some promising evidence has also been found in the city of Lugo (Ferrer Sierra, 1996;Rodríguez Colmenero, 2006;2011: 31-47), but at present is insufficient to support decisively a military presence prior to the foundation of the city (Costa- García, 2013: 367-378). Lastly, archaeological research on Roman army in this region is limited to material culture studies (Centeno et al., 2016;Fernández Ibáñez, 2006;Vega Avelaira, 2007). The absence of archaeological and historical information on the Roman army presence in the Galician and Northern Portuguese areas has contributed to the construction of historical narratives where the Triumphales obtained a series of triumphs ex Hispania although we do not know in the majority of cases to whom they were addressed (Amela Valverde, 2006); Cass. ...

Traditionally, the study of the Roman military presence in Galicia (Spain) and Northern Portugal has been based on the fragmentary documentation offered by Greek and Latin authors or epigraphy, with archaeology occupying a very secondary place in these historical narratives. In particular, the information is very scarce for the period between the 2 nd century BCE and 1 st century CE, when these territories were conquered and integrated into the Roman world. This work presents new Roman military sites discovered through an integrated methodology involving an intensive application of remote sensing techniques in order to provide information to foster a paradigm shift in this field of study. Distributed over a wide geographical area and displaying a wide morpho-typological and locational diversity, this new archaeological evidence not only reflects the ability of the Roman army to adapt to local natural and cultural environments, but also reveals a major operational and logistical assortment that may relate to the diachronic nature of the military presence in the region.

_____________________ In this paper, we present the material culture recorded in the hillfort of Las Rabas (Cervatos, Cantabria), between 1968-1969 and 2011. Our results allow us to characterize the material culture of the site and the anthropological study of the human skull shows perimortal injuries as consequence of a possible attack on the town in the 4th century a.C. The valley of the hillfort of Las Rabas is one of the most important areas of the site because most of the archaeological materials come from here. The different studies have led to interpret the valley as one of the areas of habitat or as a possible necropolis. The materials recovered during the archaeological excavation of 2011 allow us to propose that it be a landfill. The study of the archaeological materials has allowed differentiating three types of pottery productions: handmade pottery, wheel made pottery and campanian pottery. This last type could be imitations. Also abundant remains of fauna bones have been recovered, a human skull and iron and bronze objects like arms and fibulae. All archaeological objects date the site in the Second Iron Age, being destroyed during Cantabrian Wars.

This paper is the first diachronic study of daggers in the Roman Army of occupation in Hispania (Spain and Portugal), dated between the 1st century BC and the 3rd century AD. The fifty seven specimens that are currently known are analysed, together with a smaller number (eight) of the remains of their sheaths, as no further examples have been found subsequently. After the wars of conquest, although they did not vary too far from the fashions that were in favour at any time, the products in the Iberian Peninsula were noticeably different from those in the vast area of the Limes , which was in the vanguard. The daggers of the first century had neither precedents nor continuity.

A PENAPARDA (A FONSAGRADA, LUGO - SANTALLA, ASTURIAS): ARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDY OF A ROMAN CAMP IN THE WESTERNMOST AREA OF THE CANTABRIAN MOUNTAINS This paper presents the results of the archaeological campaign carried out in 2017 at the archaeological site of A Penaparda, a playing-card shaped Roman camp (ca. 10 ha) located on the border between A Fonsagrada (Lugo) and Santalla (Asturias). Following a previous archaeological survey of the Ouroso-Penouta Mountains where remote sensing techniques were used, this campaign comprised the integral survey of the archaeological structures –both on the surface and using remote sensing tools–, the artefact and metal surveying of some sections of the site, and the excavation of an exploratory trench to better characterise and date the sites’ defences. These tasks, financed by the Concello da Fonsagrada, allowed us to validate our initial hypotheses about the site and to relate this enclosure with other camps located in Eastern Galicia and western Asturias.Key words: Roman army, camp, NW Iberia, Cantabrian Mountains, archaeological survey, remote sensing.
