Academic research in the past decade has indicated that using data and analyzing learning in curriculum design decisions can lead to improved student performance and student success. As learning in many instances has evolved into the flexible format online, anywhere at any time, learning analytics could potentially provide impactful insights into s...

... methodology applied was to identify the average number of events per participant by each week of the course indicated in Figure 4. Events were defined as a learner interaction with a content element (e.g., assessment question, watching a video), including page navigation but excluding the discussion forum activity. ...

Providing timely nudges to students has been shown to improve engagement and persistence in tertiary education. However, many studies focus on small-scale pilots rather than institution-wide initiatives. This article assesses the impact of a pan-institution Early Alert System at the University of Canterbury that utilises nudging when students are a...

... indicated however that whilst the hybrid-virtual modality offered flexible alternatives to students, it was most demanding and brought a series of complex challenges, with "relatedness to peers and the intrinsic motivation" assessed as the lowest, among all modalities (p.1). Calonge et al. (2019) argued for instance that "inadequately designed peer-to-peer interaction and instructor-to-participant interaction often result in attrition" (p. 100) and disengagement in courses facilitated online. ...
This paper investigates the process of designing HyFlex classrooms at Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), a graduate-level research university located in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, underpinned by the application of the EDUCAUSE Learning Space Rating System (LSRS). This investigation takes the form of a case-study and specifically focuses on the rationale, planning, design, and technology behind the implementation of the flexible HyFlex spaces as deployed in several classroom environments at MBZUAI. Iterations’ performance was assessed with the LSRS—V3. The findings should make an important contribution to the field of HyFlex learning spaces and technology-enhanced classroom design at graduate level.
... Torre et al. (2022) argued that "multimedia content and video-based learning are expected to take a central role in the post-pandemic world" (p.1). Research by Calonge et al. (2019) indicated how crucial videos (and analytics) were for student retention in a fully online course. Considering recent events, it is indeed becoming extremely difficult to ignore the importance of VBL and its impact on learning and teaching (Navarette et al., 2023). ...
As the world regains its footing following the COVID-19 pandemic, academia is striving to consolidate the gains made in students’ education experience. New technologies such as video-based learning have shown some early improvement in student learning and engagement. In this paper, we present ORBITS predictive engine at YOURIKA company, a video-based student support platform powered by knowledge tracing. In an exploratory case study of one master’s level Speech Processing course at the Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) in Abu Dhabi, half the students used the system while the other half did not. Student qualitative feedback was universally positive and compared the system favorably against current available methods. These findings support the use of artificial intelligence techniques to improve the student learning experience.
... However, one of the critical challenges is the lack of attention to pedagogical and theoretical foundations in the use of LA (Banihashem et al., 2018(Banihashem et al., , 2019Gašević et al., 2016;Knight et al., 2014;Wiley et al., 2020;Wise, 2014). In previous studies, LA was mostly used as a tool to support and inform the design of learning, engagement, and self-regulation (see Calonge et al., 2019;Chen et al., 2018;Heller, 2020;Holmes et al., 2019;Ifenthaler et al., 2018;Kim et al., 2018;Persico & Pozzi, 2015;Roll & Winne, 2015;Toro-Troconis et al., 2019;Viberg et al., 2020;Winne, 2017). However, it lacks sound theory-oriented pedagogy (Wiley et al., 2020). ...
... The results indicated that the CLDLA model has a positive impact on learners' engagement. This is in line with previous studies highlighting the positive impacts of LA on engagement (e.g., Calonge et al., 2019;Chen et al., 2018;Toro-Troconis et al., 2019;Vytasek et al., 2020). Although previous studies confirmed that LA plays a positive role in improving students engagement, they also expressed concerns that LA implications for students' engagement could be threatened by LA technological determinism if these data findings have not been viewed and interpreted through a wider pedagogical and learning lens (Knight et al., 2014). ...
So far, the synergistic relationship between learning design and learning analytics and its impact on learners' educational practices have been investigated. However, little work has been done to show how integrated learning design based on constructivism learning theory and learning analytics can affect learners' engagement and self-regulation. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effect of the Constructivist Learning Design and Learning Analytics (CLDLA) Model on learners' engagement and self-regulation. In this experimental study, 50 graduate students at Iranian' Allameh Tabataba'i University were asked to participate in a Moodle course called "Teaching Skills" and fill out Agentic Engagement Scale and Self-Regulation Questionnaires in two steps as a pre-test and post-test measurements. Analysis of the data indicated that the CLDLA model has a positive impact on learners' engagement and self-regulation. Based on the results, recommendations for further research and educational practices are suggested.
