Understanding why some firms outperform others is central to strategy research. The resource-based view (RBV) suggests that competitive advantages arise due to possessing strategic resources (i.e., assets that are valuable, rare, nonsubstitutable, and inimitable), and researchers have extended this logic to explain performance differences. However,...

... First, empirical findings indicate that not all IT solutions provide superior performance or ensure a competitive advantage over rivals. This underscores the necessity for certain conditions to be met, including integration into enterprise information systems, alignment with company strategy and the availability of qualified and motivated employees (D'Oria et al., 2021;Xu and Lu, 2022). Decision-makers should carefully select technologies for adoption by assessing not only their firm's readiness but also by forming realistic expectations about the anticipated returns. ...

Purpose The paper aims to adopt the synthetic control group (SCG) method for the IT-driven performance analysis and validate this tool focusing on three IT solutions: Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Human Resource Management (HRM) and the internet of Things (IoT). Design/methodology/approach Based on the literature review, this paper examines the strengths and weaknesses of various research designs employed in studies investigating IT-driven performance and presents a detailed procedure for implementing SCG research design. Drawing from a dataset of manufacturing companies from one of the Easter-European markets from 2000 to 2021, the study constructs counterfactual conditions to assess the performance effects of CRM, HRM and IoT. Findings The SCG method leverages historical data and sophisticated statistical techniques to establish causal relationships between specific IT adoptions and firm performance. The empirical findings demonstrate the effectiveness of SCG in yielding reliable results across three experiments involving CRM, HRM and IoT. Practical implications The SCG method has high potential as it can deliver evidence-based decision-making for IT implementation. Before resource-intensive investment in IT is initiated, a company can find similar cases and look for evidence that they were effective for other firms in the past. Originality/value This study contributes to the field of technology management by introducing a new tool for evidence-based decision-making in IT. By surpassing traditional approaches, the study offers a more comprehensive and reliable evaluation, providing accurate insights into the true impact of IT on overall organizational performance.
... Thus, hospitals' capability to leverage digital technology may be viewed as a critical resource to satisfy the putative customer needs and deliver superior patient care (Yadav et al., 2024). The RBV framework assists in elaborating how some of the hospitals (D'Oria et al., 2021), that have enhanced capabilities in the use of technology, may be more capable of providing better and more efficient patient care in constrained input settings. ...

Purpose This study aims to explore the perceptions of leadership in lower–mid-level hospitals regarding the impact of digital transformation on the quality of patient-centered care. It specifically investigates how digital capabilities influence patient care and identifies the key factors within digital capability that contribute most significantly to enhancing patient-centered care in resource-constrained settings. Design/methodology/approach The research adopts a quantitative approach, using a cross-sectional survey design. Data were collected from 285 respondents representing leadership roles in lower–mid-level hospitals. Statistical analysis examined the relationships between digital capability and patient-centered care. Findings This paper’s findings reveal a positive, albeit weak, correlation between digital capability and patient-centered care in lower–mid-level hospitals. Key factors such as leadership support for digital adoption and the availability of trained information and communication technology (ICT) personnel were the most significant contributors to enhancing patient-centered care. This study also highlights that resource constraints, particularly in budget allocations for ICT, continue to pose challenges to fully leveraging digital technologies. Practical implications The study provides valuable insights for hospital administrators and policymakers, suggesting that targeted investments in digital capabilities, particularly in leadership and staff training, are crucial for improving patient-centered care. Originality/value This research contributes to the limited literature on digital transformation in lower–mid-level hospitals, offering empirical evidence on the role of digital capabilities in enhancing patient-centered care. The study’s focus on leadership perspectives provides a unique angle, highlighting the critical role of leadership in navigating digital challenges in health care.

... Once attracted, maintaining these individuals becomes easier since the good qualities of the business reputation lead to job satisfaction and organizational commitment (Alniacik et al., 2011). According to RBV, the firm's distinctive and valued resources may be used to promote a variety of organizational outcomes, including employee engagement (D'Oria et al., 2021). Employees that are engaged are more enthusiastic, committed, and productive (Sahni, 2021). ...
... RBV is centered on the exclusive and non-replicable resources of the business (Kellermanns et al., 2016). Meanwhile, KBV analyzes knowledge assets as strategic resources to create value (D'Oria et al., 2021). Research aims: This research aimed to investigate the relationship between absorptive capacity (ACap) and innovative culture (ICul) in an organization. Additionally, the impact of ICul on innovation and the mediating function of the variable were analyzed. In this context, Catur Purusa Artha (CPA) culture served as a moderating varaible in assimilating organizational innovation (OIn).Design/Methodology/Approach: A quantitative design was applied, and data were collected using a questionnaire distributed to 350 Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) units. Subsequently, the collected data were investigated using the Smart PLS3 application.Research findings: The results showed that ACap did not affect OIn. ACap had a positive and substantial impact on ICul, which was influenced by OIn. Therefore, ICul functioned as a mediating variable in the relationship between ACap and OIn. CPA was reported to moderate the relationship between ACap and OIn.Theoretical Contribution/Originality: The literacy could be used as a management practice developed in the business actors of Bali Province. In this context, the role of local culture was important in running a business.Practitioners/Policy Implications: This research could be used in an organization for social, economic, cultural, and business development. It is commonly assumed that information technology capabilities (ITCs) are instrumental in supply chain viability (SCV), despite negligible empirical evidence. Based on the dynamic resource-based view, this study explores how the SCV competitive advantage is influenced by the heterogeneous resource ITC through the internal operating capability postponement (POST). A quantitative survey was administered to 298 senior managers from retail manufacturing firms, to test hypotheses using hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The SPSS PROCESS Macro was used to determine the mediation and interaction effects of the dual-stage moderated-mediation model, identifying a positive correlation between ITC and POST strategies, highlighting that modern real-time data synchronization and on-demand customization IT systems are needed. POST strategies greatly improve SCV by enhancing operational flexibility, reactivity, and adaptability to dynamic market conditions. The moderators “market orientation” and “demand uncertainty” shape these relationships, emphasizing the need for firms to align their strategies with market dynamics and uncertainties. The research emphasizes the importance of valuable, rare, and inimitable resources in driving sustained competitive advantage. Practical implications suggest strategic investments in advanced IT systems and collaborative efforts in retail manufacturing firms are essential for optimizing supply chain processes. The results, discussion, implications, limitations, and suggestions for additional studies are addressed.
