Research background: Although perceived barriers are considered one of the central constructs in entrepreneurship research, most previous studies only examine the direct effect of perceived barriers on attitudes and/or intentions to become entrepreneurs. Little attention is paid to how perceived barriers can weaken individuals' translation from entrepreneurial intentions to actual behaviors. Purpose of the article: This research aims to adopt the Social Cognitive Career Theory and a moderated mediation model to bridge the entrepreneurial intention-action link, investigate the moderation effects of perceived barriers on this link and the mediation path from entre-preneurial self-efficacy to entrepreneurial behavior via entrepreneurial intention. Methods: A valid sample of 1,698 Vietnamese respondents with real working and business experiences through the stratified random sampling with three stages and PROCESS macro Oeconomia Copernicana, 14(1), 355-388 356 approach have been used to examine the moderated mediation effect of perceived barriers on the entrepreneurial self-efficacy-intention-behavior linkages. Findings & value added: The findings of this study shed new light on entrepreneurial literature by applying the Social Cognitive Career Theory to illustrate the moderated mediation effects of perceived barriers and entrepreneurial intention in the relationship between entre-preneurial self-efficacy and entrepreneurial behavior. Particularly, the translation from entre-preneurial intentions into start-up actions was found to became weaker when perceived barriers was high. Moreover, perceived barriers were also found to negatively moderate the indirect effects of entrepreneurial self-efficacy on start-up behaviors through entrepreneurial intentions. The findings of our study also provide several essential recommendations for policymakers and practitioners to encourage individuals' business venture creations and enhance entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Starting new businesses is important for the social and economic development of each country (Esfandiar et al., 2019; Fayolle & Liñán, 2014). However, research on starting a business has so far been more about clarifying the influence of factors on the intention of starting a business (Duong, 2022; Ghosh, 2022; Loan et al., 2021; Vasilev, 2022; Vuong et al., 2020), and there have not been many studies on entrepreneurial success—the determinant of the meaning of starting a business (Wang et al., 2023; Welsh et al., 2023). Entrepreneurial success is defined as a complex phenomenon, and it covers both financial and non-financial criteria (Glosenberg et al., 2022). Initially, entrepreneurial success is often equated to financial/economic indicators (Staniewski & Awruk, 2019). For example, it includes business efficiency, growth rate, profitability, liquidity, market share (Glosenberg et al., 2022), and staff growth rate (Welsh et al., 2023). Meanwhile, it is criticized that, if “entrepreneurial success” is measured only by financial (or economic) indicators, it is difficult to fully reflect the meaning of this term and it should not be limited in one way (Cumming et al., 2022). Entrepreneurial success does not necessarily equate to wealth, and researchers are very interested in entrepreneurs' work-life balance (Yu et al., 2022).

This research aims to examine how attitudes toward entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial intention individually and jointly affect start-up behaviors, drawing on the Theory of Planned Behavior. Based upon a survey dataset of 1890 master’s students in Vietnam, we methodologically adopted a polynomial regression with response surface analysis to shed light on how a higher degree of entrepreneurial behavior is synthesized from a balance between high attitudes toward entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial intention. Conversely, a large imbalance between attitudes toward entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial intention will lead to a lower level of start-up behaviors. Additionally, this study illustrates the gendered perspectives related to the complex interactions between attitudes toward entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial intention, and start-up behaviors when a high discrepancy between entrepreneurial attitudes and intentions results in a sharp decrease in start-up behaviors in women but does not occur in men. In addition to theoretical contributions, some practical and managerial suggestions are provided for enforcing entrepreneurial activities.

Purpose This study aims to integrate the theory of planned behavior (TPB), norm activation model (NAM) and stimulus–organism–behavior–consequences theory (SOBC) with the moderators to investigate the main determinants of energy-saving behaviors as well as how group-level factors and media publicity significantly facilitate the energy-saving intention-behavior linkage among dormitory students in higher education institutions (HEIs). Design/methodology/approach A valid sample of 325 dormitory students resided in universities of Vietnam and a three-step analysis approach via SPSS 28.0 and AMOS 25.0 were used to test the hypothesized model. Findings This study yields that external stimuluses (subjective norms and perceived behavioral control) positively and strongly stimulate energy–energy attitude, while internal stimuluses (ascription of responsibility, awareness of consequences) arouse personal norms. Both internal and external stimuluses were found to have serially mediation effects on energy-saving behaviors via attitude toward energy saving, personal norms and energy-saving intention. Remarkably, group interaction and media publicity exert prominent positive moderation effects on the energy-saving intention–behavior relationship. Practical implications The findings of this research can be valuable for HEIs and policymakers to inspire university students’ energy conservation behavior for sustainable development goals. Originality/value This study contributed to the proenvironmental literature by adopting the SOBC paradigm that strengthens the integration of TPB and NAM models to explore the main determinants of dormitory students’ energy-saving behaviors, explain the underlying mediation mechanisms of organisms and behavioral responses and illustrate the moderation role of group-level factors and media publicity.
Purpose Based on stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) theory and a serial multiple mediation model, this study aims to examine the relationships between cultural values and energy-saving behaviors as well as the mediation mechanisms of attitudes towards energy-saving and energy-saving intentions underlying these links. Design/methodology/approach A sample of 1,514 urban residents collected in five big cities in Vietnam and Structural Equation Modeling were employed to test the hypothesized model. Findings The study yields that energy-saving behaviors can be directly influenced by long-term orientation, but not by collectivism, while both collectivism and long-term orientation work as stimulus which immediately inspire attitude towards energy-savings and energy-saving intentions. Interestingly, attitudes towards energy-saving and energy-saving intentions not only serve as the most crucial predictors of entrepreneurial behaviors but also cooperate a serial mediation role in the impacts of cultural values on energy-saving behaviors. Research limitations/implications The findings of this research can be valuable for policymakers to inspire urban residents’ energy conservation behavior for sustainable development goals. Originality/value This study contributes to the pro-environment literature by adopting the S-O-R theory to investigate the impacts of cultural values on the energy-saving attitude-intention-behavior relationships, explain the underlying mediation mechanism of energy-saving attitudes and intentions in transferring the influences of cultural values on energy-saving behaviors, and bridge the attitude-intention-behavior gap in the energy-saving research.
