Social media has become prominent in recent years, especially among the young population, and they also substantially impact young people’s eating habits. Furthermore, social media posts and visual interactions may trigger hedonic hunger, an increased desire for highly palatable food. This study aimed to explore the relationship between social media use and the concept of hedonic hunger in a sample of college students. 860 participants between 18 and 39 were recruited for the study. Data including demographic variables, weight, height, the Scale of Effects of Social Media on Eating Behavior (SESMEB), and the Turkish version of the Power of Food Scale (PFS) were gathered based on students’ self-reports via face-to-face interviews. The most used social media outlet among all students was Instagram (60.1%), the average time spent on social media was 3.56 ± 1.91 h, and females spent significantly more time on social media than males (p < 0.001). The mean PFS score was 3.52 ± 0.77, and the subscale scores for food availability, food present, and food tasted were 3.26 ± 0.99, 3.49 ± 0.89, and 3.76 ± 0.87, respectively. Female students who spent more than 2 h on social media had higher scores on SESMEB than those who spent 2 h or less a day (p = 0.015). A significantly positive correlation was found between SESMEB scores and PFS aggregated scores (r = 0.381) and subscale scores (for food availability, present, and tasted, r = 0.369; r = 0.354; and r = 0.282, respectively). Each 1-unit increase in the SESMEB score leads to an 8% increase in the risk of hedonic hunger. Considering the impact of social media on young people’s eating habits and developing strategies may be crucial in shaping their eating patterns.

Using social networks in access and getting addicted to these applications has negatively influenced the mental health of the users. The objective of the study was to inspect the effects of social media applications including WhatsApp, Face Book, Twitter, TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram on the intensity of psychological problems including aggression, depression, and suicidal ideation among undergraduate students (N=490) both males and females with the age range from 18 years to 25 who were addicted (N=297) and non-addicted (N=193) to these social media applications. It was hypothesized that the scores of addicted students will be high on aggression, depression, and suicidal ideation. Purposive sampling technique was used and Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale, Aggression Questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory II, and Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation were administered on the students. T-test was used on SPSS version 20 to examine the statistics. Results of the study suggested that undergraduates with social media addiction have more aggression, depression, and suicidal ideation as compared to non-addicted undergraduates. The results of the project led to some practical implications. There should be some counselors and motivational lecturers in all the educational institutions to educate the students to use the social media applications in a beneficial way. Secondly, all the educational institutions must have mental health centers to deal with the effected students. Lastly, some subjects or programs should be included in the curriculum which can guide the students to use social media in a fruitful way.

The goals of this study were to find out how many Bangladeshi students use social media, how students' use of social media affected their work in school, and how their behavior have been changed. Data were gathered using a Google form online poll with a structured questionnaire. The survey ran from January to the middle of March 2021. A total of 300 invitations were sent out randomly to respondents, and 220 of them filled out the forms. The results showed that most of the respondents' academic performance suffered because they spent too much time on social media. The length of time spent on social media was significantly linked to changes in academic performance. The problems that affect female students most are paying attention in class, controlling their anger, and eating habits. The problems that affect male students most are not getting enough sleep. More time spent on social media, especially late at night, was linked to problems like losing focus, losing their anger, and not getting enough sleep.

Wikipedia, the open crowdsourced encyclopedia that anyone can edit, ranks among the top ten most-visited websites globally. Its integration into university curriculum as an innovative educational tool is a slowly growing trend; however, many higher education institutions have yet to fully grasp its potential. In response, a specific optional module for Wikipedia editing, designed for the selected undergraduate science courses at the School of Advanced Studies, Russia, was implemented as an optional extra credit service-learning activity, a teaching methodology combining meaningful service to the community with curriculum-based learning. Students who chose to participate and those who preferred not to participate in the activity were invited to participate in a research project to explore their perspectives and experiences. In total, five sessions of focus group discussions were conducted with participants (12 females and 2 males) in one set and non-participants (5 females and 4 males) in another to identify students’ perspectives on themes such as their interest in science, reasons for their choices, and their expectations before the activity while post-experience focus group discussions were used to identify the perspectives of participant students on themes, encompassing contribution of the service-learning activity, acquisition of new skills, and the development of prosocial behaviors. Students’ opinions on integrating social responsibility topics into the curriculum were also explored. The results extracted from these focus group discussions, analyzed through consensual coding, revealed factors promoting student participation, like interest in the subject, novelty of the activity, and grade improvement opportunities, as well as factors deterring participation, such as concerns about academic benefits, workload, and time constraints. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that Wikipedia editing serves as a novel teaching methodology, promoting student learning and development in digital literacy and information literacy, which are among the twenty-first-century skills. Interestingly, at the same time, not all students could address the value of contributing to open, crowdsourced knowledge for public service or interpret this activity as an academic service-learning. These suggest that Wikipedia editing is an innovative teaching approach, fostering students’ learning and development while also indicating its potential to enhance students’ understanding of responsible citizenship and public service in the digital age.

Parenting behaviors like parental affection and supervision during childhood greatly determine different developmental outcomes in later life of a person. Inadequate parenting behavior can lead to different behavioral problems, even various forms of addictions such as social media addiction (SMA) in young adults like university students. The present study attempted to investigate the relation of SMA with parental affection and supervision of university students according to their gender and family type. The sample of the study was purposively selected 200 students from Chittagong University. The family relation scale (Pervin, 2003) and the Bangla version of Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) (Ahmed et al., 2021) were used as data collection tools. The collected data were analyzed by using independent sample t-test, Pearson product moment correlation and regression analysis. Male participants perceived significantly more affection and supervision than female participants. Participants from nuclear family had significantly more SMA than extended family. SMA was found significantly negatively correlated with both parental affection and supervision. Both parental supervision and affection significantly predicted SMA and parental supervision was found as the strongest predictor. The findings of the study may contribute to reduce SMA of our university students by highlighting the need for proper parental affection and supervision.
