The paper presents new taxonomic and faunistic data on 12 species of the jumping spiders (Salticidae) from India and Nepal. A new species from east India (Odisha) is described: Carrhotus spiridonovi sp.n. (♂). Unknown females are described for two species for the first time: Colopsus cinereus Kanesharatnam et Benjamin, 2021 and Thyene bivittata Xie et Peng, 1995. New species records are provided for the faunas of India (three species) and Nepal (two species).

Jumping spiders of 10 species collected from Satun, Sukhotai and Kanchanaburi Provinces of Thailand are studied. Six species are reported from the country for the first time: Evarcha bulbosa Żabka, 1985, Phintella vittata (C.L. Koch, 1846), Phintelloides versicolor (C.L. Koch, 1846 and Portia labiata (Thorell, 1887). Two of them are new to the fauna of Indo-China (Holoplatys digitatus Zhou, Irfan et Peng, 2017 and Menemerus nigli Wesołowska et Freudenschuss, 2012). Three species – M. brachygnathus (Thorell, 1887), Plexippus paykulli (Audouin, 1826) and P. setipes Karsch, 1879 – have the southernmost records of their distribution in Thailand. One species – Stenaelurillus abramovi Logunov, 2008 – has a southernmost limit of its range. Photos of living specimens for eight species, as well as drawings of the copulatory organs for H. digitatus and M. nigli are provided.

Eighteen species of the Spartaeinae are considered in the present paper. Ten are diagnosed and described as new species: Brettus storki sp.n. ( d' ; Brunei); Meleon insulanus sp.n. (male, female, Madagascar). M. raharizonina sp.n. (male, Madagascar); M. tsaratanana sp.n. (female, Madagascar); Mintonia ignota sp.n. (male, Northem Thailand); Spartaeus abramovi sp.n. (male, female, Vietnam); S. banthamus sp.n. (female, Laos); S. jaegeri sp.n. (male, Laos); S. noctivagus sp.n. (male, female, Laos); and Veissella milloti sp.n. (male, the Comoros). Two poorly known species are illustrated and redescribed: Spartaeus thailandicus Wanless, 1984 (female, Northern Thailand) and S. zhangi Peng et Li, 2002 (male, female, Laos). The female of S. zhangi is described for the first time. Additional faunistic records and comments are given for six species: Gelotia Ianka Wijesinghe, 1991 (female, Sri Lanka); Portia albimana (Simon, 1900) ( male, Sri Lanka); P. fimbriata (Doleschall, 1859) (male, female, Sri Lanka and Malaysia); P. labiata (Thorell 1882) (male, female, Sri Lanka and Singapore); P schultzi Karsch, 1878 (female, Madagascar); and Spartaeus spinimanus (Thorell, 1878) (male, female, Singapore and Thailand).
The present spiders (Arachnida: Araneae) of Pakistan’s digital catalogue on the website will provide updated knowledge of the number of species, genera and families distributed in Pakistan. The current counts are 36 families, 119 genera and 19 species based on literature and intensive surveys since 2013. This website will ease the worldwide research for spider species’ global biodiversity explorations and distributions.
An updated checklist of faunal biodiversity of the spiders in Madhya Pradesh, one of the landlocked central Indian states, is presented herewith. A total of 336 species of spiders were enlisted under 136 genera belonging to 30 families which have been recorded/described from only 36 districts of Madhya Pradesh out of 52 districts. The maximum number of spider species was recorded from Jabalpur district (169 species) followed by Mandla (113 species), Balaghat (101 species), Chhindwara (78 species), Damoh (67 species), Betul (66 species), and Indore (63 species). The number of species of spiders recorded in 14 districts was between 10-50 while in 16 districts it was less than 10 species. Araneidae and Thomisidae both were dominant families of spiders in Madhya Pradesh and were represented by having 55 species each under 18 and 15 genera, respectively, followed by Lycosidae (39 species, 9 genera), Salticidae (37 species, 28 genera), Gnaphosidae (35 species, 12 genera), and less number in other families. Sixteen families of spiders were represented by less than 10 species. No faunal survey of spiders so far has been conducted in 16 districts of Madhya Pradesh. Most of the national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, forest areas, agricultural fields, human dwellings etc. of Madhya Pradesh still await intensive and extensive survey programmes to record the spider fauna.
An updated checklist of faunal biodiversity of the spiders, in two norther states of India, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand is presented herewith. A total of 520 species of spiders described under 236 genera belonging to 50 families were recorded in both the states of north India. The biodiversity of spiders is more in Uttar Pradesh (284 species, 146 genera, 36 families) than Uttarakhand (373 species, 202 genera, 45 families). However, most of the areas in both the states are still virgin regarding the faunal survey programmes and need intensive and extensive survey in those areas by enthusiastic workers.
The research studies on the jumping family of Salticidae in Pakistan are rare due to several reason. In this study, I present the first record of Icius alboterminus (Caleb, 2014) from Pakistan. Specimen for the study is collected selected area of district Swabi, Pakistan. The findings of the study constitute the first record of genus Icius Simon, 1876 from the country, as well as an updated distribution map is presented in this study as well.
Additional distributional record of Bianor angulosus in India
A total of 108 species of spider species belonging to 84 genera and 25 families were identified from the scrub jungle of the Madras Christian College campus. Pagida salticiformis (O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1883) is recorded for the first time from India. Langona tigrina (Simon, 1885) is rediscovered 135 years since its first description and the unknown male is described and illustrated. A new combination, Langona davidi (Caleb, Mungkung & Mathai, 2015) comb. nov. is proposed for the species previously placed in Phlegra. Three new synonymys have been recognized: Clubiona foliata Keswani & Vankhede, 2014 and Clubiona pashabhaii Patel & Patel, 1973 are junior synonyms of Clubiona filicata O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1874 and Myrmarachne megachelae Kumar & Mohanasundaram, 1998 is a junior synonym of Myrmaplata plataleoides (O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1869). Distribution records of several species have been updated and as many as 31 species are recorded for the first time from Tamil Nadu State. The family Salticidae is the most diverse with 28 species belonging to 22 genera followed by Araneidae with 19 species in 11 genera. Guild structure analysis revealed seven feeding guilds of which, stalkers and orb-web weavers are the dominant feeding guilds followed by ground runners, ambushers, and scattered line weavers, respectively.
The paper comments discussion on how to delimit taxa of Salticidae, initiated by Kropf et al. (2019). It discusses a number of important general issues, including the relative value of precise diagnostic drawings and photos compared to verbal definitions of taxa, which is relevant to hundreds of current taxonomic publications. To illustrate key principles, the paper also analyses the validity of the recent synonymization of the genera Junxattus, Lechia and Orcevia, evaluating the sufficiency and relevance of previously published morphological and molecular data.On the basis of the above (documented on Figs 1-4 below), the following momenclatural changes are introduced: Gen. Junxattus Prószyński & Deeleman-Reinhold, 2012 - revalidated - (type species Junxattus daiqini); Gen. Lechia Zabka, 1985 - revalidated - (type species Lechia squamata); Gen. Orcevia Thorell, 1890 - revalidated - (type species Orcevia keyserlingii).The placement of female of Laufeia concava and male (only!) of Laufeia squamata are erroneous and require generic transfer. Lechia minuta (Prószyński, 1992) is misplaced too, belonging neither to Laufeia nor to Euoprys, it should be provisionally listed as Lechia (according to latest documented reference) until revisionary research of fauna of its area yields additional material to clarify its correct placement.
