In our networked society, standards play an important role. That is especially the case in exchanging digital data. With “Standards” we refer to the protocols that describe how data (in so called ‘metadata’) and the data-exchange are defined to make a digital exchange of data between two devices (often computers but also computer-machine interactio...

Data sharing and reuse are crucial to enhance scientific progress and maximize return of investments in science. Although attitudes are increasingly favorable, data reuse remains difficult for lack of infrastructures, standards, and policies. The FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) principles aim to provide recommendations to incre...

... interoperabilita. ...

... Farmers need to use different tools to manage monitoring and data acquisition on-line in the field. They need to analyse information related to subsidies, communicate with tax offices, product reseller's etc. (Charvat, et al., 2012). All these needs can be described by the schema in Fig.1. ...

The agriculture sector is a unique sector due to its strategic importance for both citizens (consumers) and economy (regional and global), which ideally should make the whole sector a network of interacting organizations. The FOODIE project aims at building an open and interoperable agricultural specialized platform hub on the cloud for the management of spatial and non-spatial data relevant for farming production. The FOODIE service platform deals with including their thematic, spatial, and temporal characteristics as well as their meta-information. Most of current information systems deal with data in the proprietary structure that fits the most to the purposes of each organization or individual. The structure of data itself is commonly proprietary even if there is a standard exchangeable format used by an information system. As a result, many organizations as well as individuals produce massive amounts of information for internal and external purposes. If we would like to integrate data from several sources, we need to establish a unified data model that is capable to include all the nuances of the underlying data models. In this regard, the conceptual model of FOODIE relies upon the following basic pillars: Data and service modelling in the geospatial domain relies upon the series of ISO/OGC geospatial standards and best-practices, Data and service

The agriculture sector is a unique sector due to its strategic importance for both citizens and economy which, ideally, should make the whole sector a network of interacting organizations. There is an increasing tension, the like of which is not experienced in any other sector, between the requirements to assure full safety and keep costs under control, but also assure the long-term strategic interests of Europe and worldwide. In that sense, agricultural production influences, and is influenced by water quality and quantity, ecosystems, biodiversity, the economy, and energy use and supply. The seasonality and ubiquity of agriculture make agricultural practices and production amenable to efficient synoptic monitoring. The effectiveness of each production, including agriculture, is determined by the ratio of the value of the production outputs to the value of production inputs. For agricultural production the efficiency is affected not only by the internal factors of the production process, but also by external factors (climate, subsidies, the situation in the global market, etc.). The nature of agricultural production does not simply allow pure reducing of energy intensity; in fact the production is affected by many other factors such as: Crop rotation requires several years interval between growing certain crops on the

Big data technologies have shown significant benefits in many sectors of society, as diverse as manufacturing, business management and health science. This report looks at the state of the art of big data technologies and their application in bioeconomy, i.e. the parts of the economy that use renewable biological resources from land and sea – such as crops, forests, fish, animals and micro-organisms – to produce food, materials and energy. The DataBio project in particular, addresses agriculture, forestry and fishery, where it aims to advance the use of big data technologies by implementing several pilot demonstrations. The purpose of the document is to provide an overview for the general public and non-expert readers of recent developments in big data and highlight opportunities of how it could serve the bioeconomy sector in the near future.

The agriculture sector is a unique sector due to its strategic importance for both citizens (consumers) and economy (regional and global), which ideally should make the whole sector a network of interacting organizations. Rural areas are of particular importance with respect to the agro-food sector and should be specifically addressed within this scope. The FOODIE project aims at building an open and interoperable agricultural specialized platform hub on the cloud for the management of spatial and non-spatial data relevant for farming production; for discovery of spatial and non-spatial agriculture related data from heterogeneous sources; integration of existing and valuable European open datasets related to agriculture; data publication and data linking of external agriculture data sources contributed by different public and private stakeholders allowing to provide specific and high-value applications and services for the support in the planning and decision-making processes of different stakeholders groups related to the agricultural and environmental domains.

Within the knowledge-based bio-economy, information sharing is an important issue. In agri-food business, this is a complex issue because many aspects and dimensions play a role. An installed base of information systems lack standardisation, which hampers efficient exchange of information. The objective of this paper is to presented a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) of AgriXchange project, which reflects the business demands for utilisation of ICT and exchange of agriculture data, information and knowledge supported by current standardisation, but also by future research in ICT for agri-food industry. It reflects the needs of the agriculture business. The focus of the SRA is on identifying major ICT challenges related to the utilization of ICT and data, information, knowledge and standards in agriculture and agri-food industry sector. The agenda defines not only the necessary ICT standards, but also in a broader view the Research and Technology Development (RTD) areas which will be selected as key priorities in order to achieve the challenges identified.
