Globally, population pressure, climate change, geopolitical tensions and inflation have pushed many countries into poverty, food and nutritional insecurity, forced displacement, etc. On the other hand, changing climate is causing unusual rainfall patterns, dry spells, and deterioration of quality of the crops, and outbreaks of insects and pests, ultimately reducing crop yield. To achieve food and nutritional security in this changing climate, it is necessary to use these limited resources scientifically and efficiently such as diverse agriculture, use of climate resilient crops, etc. Therefore, climate resilient crops like millets can be incorporated in the agroforestry system to promote efficient resource management and reduce malnutrition, food insecurity, and impact of climate change. Interestingly, empirical evidence showed that the government, farmers and institutions are making efforts for sustainable land use management practices like agroforestry, climate resilient agriculture, natural farming and organic farming. This is due to lower crop failure, higher crop diversity, and efficient site utilization through tree-crop multi strata arrangements. However, in the resource-poor arid and semi-arid regions, it is crucial to select compatible tree species, suitable crop combinations, and efficient competition management techniques to effectively manage soil and water resources. In this chapter, the decision to consider India and Africa was influenced by three key features: presence of some successful Millet-based Agroforestry (MbAF) models in both the regions; millet production together accounts for 80 % of global production; and prevalence of malnutrition despite high production. Therefore, this chapter discusses the significance and potential of MbAF in these areas considering the “International Year of Millets-2023”, highlighting region-specific successful MbAF models as well as their strengths, weaknesses, and providing recommendations to assist policymakers in taking the necessary actions. The chapter further recommends creating capable MbAF models to improve income and stabilize fragile arid and semi-arid farming conditions.

Indigenous Technical Knowledge (ITK) has immense potential for grassroots innovation in India, where numerous indigenous communities possess unique traditional knowledge on technologies. These technologies, comparable to modern systems, ensure self-sufficiency and sustainable practices in weather forecasting, seed germination, soil fertility, and pest control. Particularly regions inhabited by indigenous communities are, often overlooked in mainstream agricultural discourse, ITK plays a crucial role in their socio-economic development and environmental preservation. Despite the growing recognition of ITK, there remains a critical gap in integrating ITK with modern Holistic Knowledge Systems (HKS) to address contemporary agricultural challenges. This chapter explores ITK's impact on sustainable agricultural and horticultural practices, examining its integration with HKS and its role in sustainability, productivity, food security, biodiversity conservation, and resource management.

The global food system's reliance on a few species threatens food and nutritional security. Species diversification, including indigenous species, is a viable option to address this issue. Diversity enhances food systems' resilience against climatic and economic shocks. It offers resources for improved breeds and allows farmers to mitigate risks. However, successful diversification demands collaboration among farmers, researchers, academics, professionals, retailers, consumers, and policymakers. This review analyzes the role of crop species diversity in food system transformation, focusing on monoculture vulnerabilities, diversification benefits, indigenous species' role in nutrition and food security, and the importance of integrated policies and multi-stakeholder collaborations. The tree-based farming system is one of the finest options for crop diversification, ecological stabilisation and economic upliftment in the Indian Himalayan regions. Keeping this scenario in mind, an on-field experiment was conducted to assess the effect of Populus deltoides 'G-48' tree spacings (S 1 :6 m × 4 m, S 2 :4 m × 4 m) with open-field condition (S 0) and different nutrient sources [T 1 :Control; T 2 :100% RDN (recommended dose of nitrogen); T 3 :75% RDN + 25% FYM (farmyard manure); T 4 :50% RDN + 50% FYM; T 5 :25% RDN + 75% FYM; T 6 :100% FYM; T 7 :100% Vermicompost); T 8 :Jeevamrut (10%), each replicated thrice] on agro-nomic performance of Curcuma longa at Solan, India during 2019-2021. The results revealed that C. longa grown under tree spacing S 1 coupled with the application of T 3 treatment showed marked enhancement in growth, quality attributes of C. longa and post-harvest soil nutrient status whereas, yield attributes were better in S 0. The yield of C. longa was curtailed by 22.5 and 31.6%, whereas curcumin content was enhanced by 13.4% and 12.2% under S 1 and S 2 , respectively over S 0. The vegetation carbon density (66.38 Mg ha −1), total ecosystem carbon density (119.04 Mg ha −1), and total carbon sequestered (436.47 Mg ha −1) was found to be higher under S 1 , whereas soil carbon density (55.68 Mg ha −1) was maximum under S 2 being at par with S 1. Maximum net returns (14,693 US$ ha −1 yr −1) were realised under S 1 tree spacing and T 3 treatment. Overall, the study concluded that in P. deltoids-C. longa system, application of 75% RDN + 25% FYM at 6 m × 4 m spacing of poplar have demonstrated efficacy in getting a better quality of turmeric, maintaining soil fertility , and combating climate change.

Mimusops elengi L., (bullet wood) belongs to the family Sapotaceae and is a native tree species of Western Ghats, India. It is well known for its fruit, and fodder and is grown as an ornamental tree. Various parts of the tree are utilized in traditional medicinal practices. In this species, seed germination is rather difficult without pre-seed treatment. Hence, the present study was taken up to analyze the seed morphometric traits namely, seed length, seed width, and seed weight, and also to find the effect of different pre-sowing treatments on seed germination by following standard procedures. The study was conducted at the College of Forestry, Ponnampet, Kodagu district, Karnataka. The average length, width, and thickness of the seeds were 18.09 mm, 12.02 mm, and 6.33 mm, respectively. The maximum seed germination was observed in cold water treatment for 24 hours (34.44%) followed by GA3 500 ppm (30%) and the minimum was observed in hot water treatment (1.1%). Although the germination was poor in this species, treating the seeds of Mimusops elangi with cold water for a day increases the germination by 34.4 percent.

In the context of increasing climatic variability, it is important to find ecologically and financially viable coping strategies for farmers who have less access to technological improvements. Agroforestry assumes considerable significance in this pursuit on account of their unique potential for the modulation of microclimate by trees which is important for improving opportunities and scope for coping with climate change scenarios. In comparison to an open environment (treeless condition), the modified microclimate beneath trees moderates the biophysical factors such as solar radiation, extremes of temperature, humidity, soil evaporation and soil moisture, all of which have an impact on the development of crops and other organisms. In forage-livestock systems, trees in pastures improve the microclimate consequently, the thermal comfort indices. This chapter summarizes the influence of trees on sub-canopy microclimate, focusing on variables such as air and soil temperature, relative humidity, evapotranspiration, wind currents and incident photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) for understanding microclimate dynamics with reference to the understory crop productivity.

Currently, population pressure has created more demand for limited resources like land, water, and other resources. To fulfill the growing demand of food grains, it is necessary to use these limited resources scientifically and efficiently. On the other hand, changing climate is causing erratic rainfall, drought, flash flood and ultimately leads to crop failure. To address these emerging issues, millets can be incorporated in the agroforestry system to promote efficient resource management and reduce malnutrition, food insecurity, and impact of climate change. Interestingly, empirical evidence showed that farmers are switching from conventional monoculture to sustainable cultivation practices like agroforestry, climate resilient agriculture, and organic farming. This is due to higher intermittent yield, increased production, lower crop failure, higher crop diversity, and efficient site utilization through tree-crop multi strata arrangements. The compatible tree species, congruous crop combinations, and effective competition management techniques must be chosen in these resource-poor arid and semi-arid regions to effectively manage soil and water resources. In the present study, the decision to choose India and Africa was influenced by three key features: presence of some successful MbAF models in both the regions; millet production together accounts for 80 % of global production; and prevalence of malnutrition despite high production.
