... In this context, several public policies have been implemented, such as intervention projects and conversion of rural spaces (Historical Villages of Portugal, Schist Villages, Wine Production Villages, Mountain Villages, Coastal Villages, among others), which play a fundamental role in structuring of the tourist system in alternative tourism destinations. These policies are based on a new model of alternative, endogenous and participatory development, which aims to promote the development of the territory through the enhancement of local resources, such as the built, cultural, and natural heritage, traditions and production systems linked to the rural economy, considering new tourism consumers (Middleton, Fyall, Morgan & Ranchhod, 2009;Diez, 2020). Tourism is gaining evidence as an instrument capable of revitalizing the social and economic structures of the most disadvantaged areas, including rural areas in the interior of the country (Silva, 2013). ...
... Six Spanish destinations were selected according to the following criteria: Despite the difficulties in clearly establishing the phases (Díez, 2020), we can affirm that Albarracín and Guadalest are in an incipient phase of the destination life cycle. The number of tourists, the main indicator for determining the stage of the life cycle, offers very high figures in relation to the number of inhabitants. ...
... The economic impact is greater, although tensions between locals and visitors may emerge. Tourism policies focus on digital promotion actions, improvement of transport infrastructure, development of tourism offers, increasing overnight stays and spending per visitor, deseasonalising, reordering land use and improving accessibility (Díez, 2020). Ronda and Barcelona can be considered mature destinations, where negative economic, environmental and social impacts begin to emerge (Diedrich & García-Buades, 2009). ...
... Ronda and Barcelona can be considered mature destinations, where negative economic, environmental and social impacts begin to emerge (Diedrich & García-Buades, 2009). Therefore, tourism policies focus on avoiding negative social, cultural, environmental and overcrowding effects (Díez, 2020). ...
Purpose
Free guided walking tours are one of the most successful tourism segments in the digital platform economy. It is beginning to be associated with negative impacts in some of the destinations where it is spreading rapidly. Although the platform economy is generating increasing academic interest, the free tour model remains largely unexplored area in the literature. This study aims to examine how such activity affects cultural destinations.
Design/methodology/approach
Focussing on the largest Free Tours platform operating in Spain, GuruWalk, the methodology used analyses its impact in six cultural destinations on two of the sustainability dimensions: the territorial dimension and the governance, through an exploratory study.
Findings
The findings help to understand the differences that such activity generates in each destination depending on the phase of its life cycle, and to implement, if necessary, corrective measures. The research confirms that the impacts differ according to the tourist destination’s maturity, concluding that such activity contributes to the increase of tourist agglomerations and the overcrowding of cultural destinations in their middle and mature life cycles. The findings highlighted the importance of the role of local governance on free tour activity.
Originality/value
The main contribution is the association of the impacts they produce (especially in terms of massification) with destination life cycle phases. There were no similar precedents with a spatial or territorial analysis to reliably demonstrate not only that this activity has an impact on the territory but also what type of impact is produced.
... Currently, the rural environment has come to be seen as an area that offers experiences related to rest, leisure and safety. Thus, it is interpreted through two prisms: as a tourist offer, by its local management, and as tourist demand, by travellers looking for new experiences [37]. ...
Montesinho Natural Park is one of the largest Portuguese natural protected areas, presenting good biodiversity and a cultural heritage with a strong connection to the territory and its people. It constitutes a low-density territory, characterized by a human and social landscape based on community practices, such as joint aid and the community use of goods and means of agricultural production, which have contributed to the construction of the “transmontana” identity and to the richness of the habitats. The promotion of the sustainable development of this low-density rural region demands the understanding of its specificities and an appropriate approach to grasp its challenges and develop effective management tools, allowing to preserve and exploit the region’s potential from various perspectives. The purpose of this article is to develop an analytical model using a literature review and a survey of the region’s specificities. This analytical model intends to provide the basis for designing and assessing sustainable development solutions, increasing local entrepreneurship and community empowerment through regional dynamism, with a focus on environment and heritage preservation, universal tourism accessibility, collective memory and endogenous product development. The suggested model adopts an interdisciplinary perspective and stresses that, in order to ensure that the new initiatives will contribute to the territory’s sustainable development, they should be scrutinized by asking four main questions: Is the initiative promoting the rural development of the territory through the creation of synergies between agroforestry and tourism activities? Is the initiative promoting an inclusive and sustainable tourism that is based on the territory’s resources? Are heritage and collective memory being preserved and valued through the initiative? Is the initiative promoting the empowerment of local communities?
... Today the rural environment is perceived as an area that offers experiences of rest, leisure and safety. Consequently, it should be noted that rural community tourism is analyzed in two ways, from its local management as a tourist offer, and as a tourist demand by allocentric travelers seeking new experiences (Diez, 2020).Tourism is an economic activity of great importance for most countries, for this reason it is recognized for going hand in hand with the factor of human talent, whose main work is linked to the exhaustive work of international organizations such as the UNWTO, ILO, UNESCO. In addition, it must have a slow and systematic progress which must be managed locally (Joo et al., 2020). ...
Colombia is the country with the largest number of birds in the world, with approximately 1909 species, it also has 83 endemic species. However, the accelerated transformation of natural vegetation cover in Bogotá has affected native biodiversity in some cases irreversibly, originating development of agricultural and industrial activities and the growth of urban areas. Therefore, this research implements community-based avitourism strategies for the appropriation of environmental knowledge in the rural community of Ciudad Bolivar in Bogotá. Community-based avitourism is the activity carried out by bird watchers in the communities, where the communities have the opportunity to appropriate the knowledge of ornithological species and thus develop and provide touristic services as a complementary income to their local economy. To do this, there must be integration and distribution, as well as having trained personnel. This strategy contributes to local development, to achieve social benefits that help to preserve the habitat and biodiversity of its territory. This article has a qualitative approach, through participatory action with members of the community, its development was carried out in three phases, first the recognition of the ornithological species of the territory, second a participatory action research process, and finally, provide actions for the environmental appropriation of the community through a bird course. This allows the community to strengthen tourism based on environmental and sustainable practices, which achieves an ecological transformation for the communities and a greater social appropriation of knowledge.
