A systematic monograph of the Trembleya s.s. clade is presented, a Brazilian endemic lineage of Melas-tomataceae comprising 11 species and currently recognised as part of Microlicia s.l. (Melastomataceae). First, we investigate phylogenetic relationships within Lavoisiereae using two nuclear markers and two sampling datasets (102 and 134 terminals). Then, we provide a systematic revision and new circumscription of the Trembleya s.s. clade, including line drawings, photos of living specimens, leaves and floral parts, distribution maps, a key to the 11 accepted species, comments on morphology, reproductive biology, richness, endemism, biogeography and recommended conservation assessments. A nomenclatural update of all taxa previously treated in Trembleya is also provided, including the designation of 45 lectotypes and the proposal of 38 new synonyms.

The Melastomataceae, with ca. 177 genera and 5858 species, are among the ten most species-rich families of angiosperms. Previous molecular phylogenetic analyses have recovered many infrafamilial clades that are incongruent with traditional classifications based on morphology. Here, we present the most taxonomically comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of the Melastomataceae to date with DNA sequences from the nuclear ribosomal ETS and ITS regions combined with seven plastid regions from 2435 species (2973 terminals) representing 158 currently accepted genera. Based on these results, we propose a new classification of the family, including three subfamilies (Olisbeoideae, Kibessioideae, and Melastomatoideae) and 21 tribes. The phylogeny exhibits strong statistical support for most nodes along the backbone of the tree and for clades recognized at the subfamilial and tribal ranks. Descriptions are provided for three new tribes (Dinophoreae, Rupestreeae, and Stanmarkieae). All genera are now placed in a tribe, and these assignments are supported by morphological characters. For each subfamily and tribe, we provide a detailed morphological description and an enumeration of constituent genera, together with brief notes on diagnostic characters, taxonomic history, and geographic distribution. Additional information on most tribes is provided in other chapters of this book.

Trembleya parviflora (D. Don) Cogn., Melastomataceae, also known as “quaresmeira-branca”, is a subshrub that is commonly used to treat verminosis, scabies, dermatoses, rheumatism, vaginal infections, ulcerations and wounds. The aim of this work was to perform a morphological study of T. parviflora, evaluate the composition and chemical variability of the volatile oils from the leaves, perform phytochemical screening of the powder from the leaves and to define parameters for quality control of the plant material. Macroscopic characterization of T. parviflora was carried out by naked eye in Serra dos Pireneus, Pirenópolis, Goiás for 12 months. Volatile oils were subjected to hydrodistillation with Clevenger apparatus and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Phytochemical screening and ash and volatile compound content determination were performed by conventional techniques. T. parviflora has simple, oppositely crossed and petiolate leaves. The inflorescence of this plant is a cyme. The presence of coumarins, steroids, triterpenes, flavonoids and tannins was observed. The total ash content was 4.05 ± 0.02%; the insoluble ash content was 0.10 ± 0.03%; and the volatile compound content was 9.53 ± 0.02%. The major compounds present in the volatile oils were α-terpineol (2.7–16.5%), α-pinene (0.6–25.4%), β-pinene (2.7–23.1%), sabinene (1.2–14.1%), acetoxyeudesman-4-α-ol (0.6–6.3%) and 2,4a-8,8-tetramethyldecahydrocyclopropanaphtalene (2.4–24.4). Two clusters were identified: Cluster I represented the period with low levels of rainfall, and Cluster II represented the period with high levels of rainfall. This study provides data that can be applied for the quality control of powdered leaves and is the first description of the chemical composition and variability of the volatile oils from the leaves of T. parviflora.

A taxonomic study of the genera Henriettea and Henriettella in the flora of Rio de Janeiro State is presented. Each genera is represented by only one species - Henriettea saldanhaei and Henriettella glabra, that are found in the Atlantic forest. A key to identify the genera of the tribe Miconieae and the species studied is presented, as well as descriptions, illustrations, geographical distribution data and comments about nomenclatural and morphological particularities are provided. Three lectotypes are proposed and Henriettea glazioviana, H. glazioviana var. verruculosa and Henriettella glazioviana are accepted as synonyms. The occurrence of Henriettea saladanhaei and Henriettella glabra to the Espírito Santo State is pointed out for the first time.

The taxonomic study of the genus Meriania in the flora of Rio de Janeiro state is presented. An identification key, morphological descriptions, affinities, geographical distribution and illustrations are presented, as well as new synonymous. The eight species occur in altitudinal Atlantic forest: M. claussenii, M. excelsa, M. glabra, M. glazioviana, M. longipes, M. paniculata, M. robusta and Meriania sp., a new species recently collected in the south of the state. Except for M. claussenii, M. glabra and M. paniculata, all of them are endemic of Rio de Janeiro. Characters related to the leaves, indumentums and inflorescences have shown as diagnostics for the recognition of the species.

A taxonomic study of the clade Merianthera and the tribes Merianieae and Microliceae (Melastomataceae) of Serra Negra, located in the southern region of Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais, Brazil, is presented. The clade Merianthera is represented by Behuria parvifolia, Huberia nettoana and Cambessedesia hilariana, Merianieae is represented by Meriania claussenii, while Microlicieae is represented by Lavoisiera imbricata, Microlicia serpyllifolia, Rhynchanthera dichotoma, Trembleya elegans, Trembleya parviflora and Trembleya phlogiformis. The region is suffering environmental impacts due to Pinus and Eucalyptus planting, real-state speculation, disorganized visitation, illegal collection of plants, as well as the use of forest remnants and field areas for grazing. Regarding conservation, it should be highlighted the species B. parvifolia, H. nettoana and M. claussenii, probably threatened with extinction at regional or national levels. Identification keys, descriptions, illustrations, information on the geographical distribution and morphological comments for taxa of these groups in Serra Negra are presented.

A taxonomic study of Leandra in the Ecological Reserve of Macaé de Cima is presented. The genus is represented by 35 species. Three new synonyms are recognized and three lectotypes are designated. A key to the identification of the taxa are also provided, as well as descriptions, illustrations, geographic distribution data and comments about taxonomic and morphological particularities. Leandra aspera, L. atroviridis, L. eriocalyx, L. laxa, L. mollis, L. multisetosa, L. sphaerocarpa, and L. tetragona are endemic to Macaé de Cima. These species and L. altomacaensis, L. breviflora, L. hirta var. hirta, and L. magdalenensis are endemic to the State of Rio de Janeiro. Leandra altomacaensis, L. glazioviana, L. riedeliana, and L. truncata represent new occurrences to the studied area. Leandra aspera, L. atroviridis, L. multisetosa, L. sphaerocarpa, and L. tetragona are ilustrated for the first time.

Abstract— A new species of Meriania (Melastomatacea; Merianieae) endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest is described and illustrated. Meriania paratyensis is known only from a single locality in the Joatinga Ecological Reserve, municipality of Paraty, in Rio de Janeiro State. The diagnostic characteristics and comparisons with similar species, geographic distribution, and a conservation assessment using IUCN guidelines are presented for the new species, as well as a key to identify all Meriania species known from the Atlantic Forest.
