A revision of Myrosmodes from Peru is presented. Seven species are recognized for the country. Each species is described and illustrated on the basis of a revision of type material, protologues and Peruvian specimens. Its distribution within the country is assessed. Myrosmodes nervosa is recorded for first time in Peru. New synonyms are proposed: M...

... The vouchers were deposited at JBB. To determine the generic identity of the species, we consulted the pertinent literature on the taxonomy of the subtribe Spiranthinae (Szlachetko et al. 2001, Dueñas Gómez & Fernández-Alonso 2007, 2009, Salazar et al. 2018. For the circumscription of Pachygenium, we followed Salazar et al. (2018). ...

Pachygenium muyscarum, a new species from Colombia, is described, illustrated, and aspects related to its distribution, ecology, conservation status, and relationships with morphologically similar species are discussed. This species is characterized by flowering without leaves, labellum 1.4–1.6 cm long, with the apex trilobulate and labellum nectar glands 0.2–0.4 cm long, subulate and uncinate. To date, this is the only species of the genus present in Colombia, being endemic to the subxerophytic enclaves of Cundinamarca.

Salazar, Dueñas & Fern.-Alonso (formerly Wallnoeferia peruviana Szlach.; Dueñas & Fernández-Alonso, 2009). Indeed, Helonoma is similar to the Guiana Highland endemic, monospecific Aracamunia in its rhizomatous habit, roots covered by silvery pubescence, few-flowered raceme, flowers provided with a long mentum (and correspondingly long column foot), partially fused sepals and spatulate petals partially adnate to the sepals. ...

Subtribe Spiranthinae is the most species-rich lineage of terrestrial Neotropical orchids, encompassing > 500 species and 40 genera. We conducted maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequence data of plastid matK-trnK and trnL-trnF and nuclear ribosomal ITS sequences for 36 genera and 182 species of Spiranthinae plus appropriate outgroups. The results strongly support monophyly of Spiranthinae (minus Discyphus, Discyphinae and Galeottiella, Galeottiellinae) and five major lineages, namely monospecific Cotylolabium (sister to the remaining Spiranthinae) and the Eurystyles, Pelexia, Spiranthes and Stenorrhynchos clades. Eighteen of the 27 genera of Spiranthinae for which more than one species was included in our analyses are monophyletic. Paraphyly of large genera, such as Cyclopogon and Sarcoglottis, resulted from segregation of particular species or groups of species exhibiting minor modifications of structures directly involved in pollination (e.g. nectary, rostellum and viscidium). Conversely, polyphyly has resulted from convergent evolution of floral attributes in distantly related species (e.g. Mesadenus). Some of the morphological characters used traditionally for generic delimitation and in nonmolecular cladistic analyses of Spiranthinae are discussed against the evolutionary framework set by our molecular trees, emphasizing putative synapomorphies and problems derived from inappropriate character coding or incorrect homology assessments. Our ancestral area analysis indicates that Spiranthinae originated in eastern South America, with subsequent migrations and secondary radiations in Mesoamerica and North America, plus a derived migration from the latter region to the Old World (Spiranthes).

The Campoalegre River basin and its sub-basins present water-use conflicts. This study seeks to analyze these conflicts using a disaggregated quantitative approach, so as to better understand existing and potential water stress. We find that the estimated future flows are not sufficient to meet future demand, which will create significant water stress, particularly in certain sub-basins. A tool is provided for decision makers to identify potential future water conflicts, as well as strategies to reduce system vulnerability. This study is relevant for other watersheds where pressure on water resources may intensify due to increased water demands.

A new species of the orchid genus Pterichis, P. herrerae, and a new variety of P. habenarioides, P. habenarioides var. costaricensis, are described and illustrated based on Costa Rican material. Information about new Costa Rican records of P. pauciflora and P. parvifolia is provided. An updated key to Costa Rican species of Pterichis is presented.

The diversity of the Neotropical subtribe Cranichidinae comprising mostly terrestrial orchids is still discussed by numerous taxonomists. The actual number of species classified in the genera of this group seems to be underestimated in the light of the recent revisions of the herbarium material. In this paper the taxonomic affinities of three controversial species considered as representatives of Cranichis: Pseudocranichis thysanochila, Ocampoa mexicana and Exalaria parviflora are discussed. Three new combinations, one within Pseudocranichis and two within Ocampoa are proposed. Results of the taxonomic revision of Colombian Cranichis are presented together with a key to the national representatives of the genus

A new species of Microchilus, endemic to Colombian Department of Putumayo, named Microchilus ormerodianus is described here. The new taxon is related with M. sprucei from which it is easily distinguished by long floral bracts, ovate sepals, ligulate-oblanceolate, shortly acuminate petals and cylindrical-ellipsoid spur.
