Examples of terracotta pessoi (probably from amphora) found in Roman latrines dating from the 2nd century AD. The one on the left comes from Utica (Sicily), has a diameter of 4.7 cm and a thickness of 1.7 cm, and has been re-cut as an octagon. 7 The pessos on the right was found in Gortyn (Crete) and has a diameter of 6 cm and a thickness of 1.3 cm

Virtual reality (VR) simulators can help train manual wheelchair skills. Transfer of skills from the virtual to the real world may depend on the sense of presence, or of being “in” the virtual environment.
Objectives
To compare 1) the usability (in terms of performance, overall experience, and satisfaction), as well as 2) the sense of presence, in...

The aim of this paper is the study of cut potsherds from the vaccean and roman site of Pintia. Firstly, we focus on the different functional areas in which these elements appear, which verified their presence since the origination of vaccean culture, as well as a reinforcement in their use with the intensification of romanization process. Secondly, a technological and statistical analysis have been undertaken on a selection of individuals from the habitational area of Las Quintanas, due to it is the largest group identified in precise contexts. Therefore, initially a detailed study of two singular accumulations from the Roman Phase is carry out: a hole located in house 1 that contained 182 cut potsherds and a pithos from house 2 with 147 samples. Subsequently, these results are compared
with those of the rest of the individuals in the hillfort, which have shed light on the different types and ways of making this kind of objects. Finally, the meaning and possible functionalities of these artifacts are discussed, such as their use as part of counting systems, game counters, covers and/or supports.

In this paper we present some pieces considered insignificant by their formal features: fragments of vascular ceramics cut from which their various functionalities are analysed. For this reason we have focused on a specific find, the Iberian votive deposit of Iliberri dated in the ivth century bc. We have studied these pieces, evaluating them within their archaeological context in order to try to understand the relationship between the functionality of these objects, their analogy and the parallels with other contextual studies. With that in mind, we have selected the most significant cases, trying to determine, on the one hand, the different variants of shapes on which the discoidal pieces have been cut and, on the other, trying to clarify their use.The analysis and contrast of the context that we present, corresponding to the Granada discovery in the Zacatín Street, and other similar archaeological contexts that we have been able to identify in the archaeological bibliography, allow us to affirm that in order to arrive at a correct interpretation of these pieces it is necessary to evaluate them within contextual, iconographic and technological analyses.
... Other ceramic disks, particularly those with two perforations, could have potentially been used as whirligigs (Noël Hume 1970:320-321). Although our focus is on the Americas, one Old World interpretation warrants mention: in Greco-Roman contexts, small circular ceramic disks called pessoi were possibly used after defecation in the same manner as modern toilet paper (Charlier et al. 2012;Papadopoulos 2002). ...
Modified ceramic disks have been recovered from historic-era sites across the Americas. Small unperforated disks are commonly interpreted as gaming pieces and larger perforated disks are often classified as spindle whorls. Here, we examine these interpretations in light of collections from three colonial-era sites in central California: Mission San Antonio de Padua, Mission San José, and the Rancho San Andrés Castro Adobe. We argue that the small unperforated disks from our study sites were two-sided dice. These gaming pieces facilitated the social cohesion of Native people living in the large, multiethnic Indigenous communities that formed around Spanish colonial missions and later Mexican-era ranchos.
... For example, the base of a vessel in a sandy ware with oxidised surfaces has been deliberately trimmed to form a shallower cup/dish (ditch 2404), while pieces from three probable jars have post-firing perforations with diameters of 8-10mm in the vessel walls (pit 2113, pit 2180, gully group 2413). Ditch 2400 contained a sherd of Savernake-type ware that had been shaped into a flat disc (ON 2; Figure 8, 6); such items have traditionally been interpreted as gaming pieces/counters, but a more recent interpretation suggests that they may have been an early form of toilet paper (Charlier et al. 2012;Papadopoulos 2002). ...
An excavation southeast of Melksham revealed evidence for Romano-British settlement, land division and agricultural activity dating from the latter half of the 1st century AD to the 3rd century AD. These activities, represented by pits, postholes, ovens and ditches, were associated with a sequence of enclosures and a field system. An arrangement of concentric curvilinear gullies could represent a roundhouse, or some other structure associated with edge-of-settlement activity.
This chapter examines panic-buying (PB) as byproduct of pandemics. Panic buying is associated with disasters including pandemics. If and when disasters become more prominent and prevalent, understanding phenomena like PB becomes an important part of disaster communication and disaster management. Panic buying of toilet paper was examined during the international Covid-19 crisis of 2019–2020 in an effort to study and explain the behavior of PB, who panic buyers are, which drivers motivate PB as well as the socio-psychological explanations of panic-buying found in the existing literature. The chapter concludes with some recommendations to reduce PB in the future. This is a snapshot of a behavior intrinsic to disasters of all sorts and should serve as both explicative and proscriptive warnings.
