Graphene has been utilized to increase the strength of aluminum but electrical conductivity is normally decreased that significantly limits the applications. In this study, nickel-encapsulated graphene was used to maintain the separation of graphene flakes and to form good interfacial bonding between graphene and aluminum as well as to prevent forming degraded Al4C3 phase. Graphene flakes were obtained with ionic salt solution and electroless chemical deposition was used to encapsulate the exfoliated graphene with nickel. Uniform dispersion of graphene in aluminum matrix was achieved by ball milling, and compaction sintering under 50 MPa stress were used to fabricate the composites. The effects of Ni thickness which controlled by changing the deposition time on the resultant mechanical strength and electrical conductivity of the composites were investigated. For graphene addition of 0.1 wt%, the Ni-deposition time of 3 min produces the tensile strength and conductivity of the composite of 158 MPa and 33.6 MS/m, respectively, which are about 75.6% and 4.3% greater than that of pure aluminum, respectively. The increased strength together with the increased electrical conductivity are attributed to the stronger interface bonding owing to the better wetting ability between Ni and Al, as well as preventing the formation of Al4C3.Graphical abstract

Authors have investigated the thermal and electrical conduction behavior of Al/MWCNT composite fabricated by powder metallurgy method in which CNTs were pre-encapsulated with Ni. The thermal and electrical conductivity values were found proportional to the addition of CNTs. For 2.5% wt. CNTs addition with HIP treatment, the Al/CNT composite showed thermal conductivity of 476 W/m-k which is about 85% higher than the value of pure Al. Also, the resultant electrical conductivity was 0.405 × 10 ⁻⁸ S which is about 14% higher than the value of pure Al. The increased thermal and electrical conductivity can be attributed mainly to the well dispersion of CNTs through Ni-encapsulation and the enhanced interfacial bonding of Ni-coated CNTs with the matrix. Due to having good electrical conductivity of nickel itself, electrical conductivity of the composite was also enhanced which was further confirmed from First Principle study.

In this paper we present a green method to deposit a low-friction Ni-P film on nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) for dynamic contacts. NBR’s surface functionalization was carried out, where metal bonding carboxylic acid derivatives were created as a consequence of aqueous chlorination. The modified surfaces were thereafter activated with silver nanoparticles (Ag-NBR) or catechol moieties following polydopanime polymerization and reduction (PDA-NBR). Furthermore, relevant physical and mechanical alterations were observed, namely surface cracks and a decrease of tensile strength of 43% and an increase of Young’s Modulus by +132%. Nevertheless, the sealing ability of the rubber may not have been significantly affected as compression set was reduced by a fairly 20%. Thereafter, a low friction Ni-P film was deposited on the functionalized and activated samples via electroless plating. PDA-NBR plated NBR displays a smooth, cauliflower morphology Ni-P film whereas in Ag-NBR substrates the film has a granular feature resulting from a hierarchical structure. The Ni-P film adhesion to Ag-NBR and PDA-NBR surfaces were 0.7 ± 0.2 MPa and 1.5 ± 0.3 MPa, respectively. Tribological evaluation demonstrated that the coefficient of friction decreased from ~ 1.16 of NBR to a lower and steadier value for PDA-NBR than its Ag-NBR counterpart: 0.60 and 0.50 against 0.73 and 0.76 for 3N and 5 N loads, respectively. These results show that the rubber activation treatment influences the microstructure of the deposited Ni-P film and its tribological behavior.

In this study, aluminium–carbon nanotube–nickel (Al–CNT–Ni) composite was prepared by powder metallurgy from pure Al powder and Ni-encapsulated CNT. Previously, carbon nanotubes were coated with nickel following ultraviolet-assisted electroless deposition method. Tensile strength and hardness of the composites were found to increase in proportion to the CNTs addition. For an addition of 7 wt.% Ni-coated CNTs containing 2.5 wt.% nanotubes of 8–15 nm diameter (Ni to CNT ratio was 1–0.357), resultant tensile and yield strength were increased by 129.26% and 157.48% respectively compared to pure aluminium. Hardness was also increased by 171.39%. These results were obtained while conventional sintering was followed by further consolidation by Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP). Enhanced mechanical properties are attributed to the well dispersion of CNTs in aluminium matrix and strong interfacial bonding between CNT and aluminium. Well dispersion of CNTs and strong interfacial bonding was resulted from the uniform Ni-encapsulation as verified by red shift in Raman Spectroscopy.

The carbon fibers were ultrasonically treated under nickel chloride solution, and nickel ions were attached to the surface of the carbon fibers, which replaces the nitric acid oxidation method used in the original electroless nickel plating. Electroless nickel plating was performed on the surface of the carbon fibers using a palladium-free technique successfully. Nickel-plated carbon fibers with a higher weight gain ratio than the original method was obtained. XPS was used to study the functional group changes on the surface of carbon fibers and the chemical valence of nickel element. The mechanism of ultrasonic treatment on the surface of carbon fibers was analyzed, and the effect of ultrasonic treatment on the weight gain rate of nickel-plated carbon fibers was discussed. The results show that the ultrasonic treatment under nickel chloride solution can significantly increase the content of polar functional groups on the surface of carbon fibers and can promote the bonding of the carboxyl group on the surface of the carbon fibers with the hydrated nickel ion to form CF–COO–Ni–. The formation of CF–COO–Ni– enhances the bonding strength between the nano-nickel particles and the carbon fibers, thereby increasing the bonding strength between the plating layer and the substrate. The concentration of nickel chloride solution and ultrasonic power during ultrasonic treatment has a great influence on the weight gain rate of carbon fibers after electroless plating. When the concentration is greater than 10 g/L, the higher the concentration, the smaller the weight gain rate. When the treatment concentration is less than 10 g/L, the concentration has little effect on the weight gain rate. The optimum treatment concentration obtained in the experiment was 7 g/L. As the ultrasonic power increases, the weight gain rate increases first and then decreases, and the optimal ultrasonic power is 80 W. Ultrasonic time does not have a large effect on the weight gain rate, but the too low ultrasonic time will cause a slight decrease in the weight gain rate.

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and nanoscaled electroless copper plating were introduced to enhance the mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites in this study. The influence of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with weight fractions of 0.5–1.5% of epoxy resin on the mechanical properties of CFRP composites was investigated. The MWCNTs and epoxy resin was first mixed, prior to impregnating the carbon fiber fabrics. Electroless copper plating, a deposit method using simultaneous reactions in an aqueous (copper) solution without external electric power, was applied on the carbon fiber surface, and the effect was also investigated. The CFRP test specimens were fabricated by hand lay-up method, using one or three carbon fiber fabrics. The mechanical properties of the CFRP test specimens were derived by tensile tests according to KS M ISO 527-4. According to the morphology taken by SEM, the carbon fiber surface was significantly rough with copper ions. Because of this, the strength and ultimate strain of coated specimens increased up to 26.3 and 18.6% compared to noncoated specimens, respectively. In addition, as the MWCNTs amount increased, the ultimate strain of the composites also increased. In the case of CFRP test specimens using noncoated carbon fiber fabrics, the addition of 1.5% wt. MWCNTs increased the peak strength and ultimate strain of CFRP specimens up to 80.5 and 48.8%, respectively. Finally, the tensile stress-strain relationship of CFRP specimens was idealized as bilinear or trilinear response curves.

The high thermal conductivity of thermal interface material (TIM) is essential since the heat dissipation of electronic chips in an integrated circuit is solely achieved through TIM, which forms the bottleneck of the heat conduction. In the current study, the efficiency of utilizing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to increase the thermal conductivity of a typical TIM 70Sn-30Bi alloy has been investigated. Encapsulation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with nickel by electroless deposition was used to prevent aggregation of CNTs and to enhance the interfacial bonding between CNTs and the metal matrix. The nickel encapsulation also allows avoiding the separation of CNTs from the molten metal due to the buoyancy effect. The dispersion of Ni-encapsulated CNTs was assisted by sonication. The thermal conductivity of 3 wt % Ni/MWCNTs reinforced 70Sn-30Bi alloy was found to be more than 170% greater than that of the base alloy.

With the growing interest to construct more efficient aircraft, more components are designed out of lightweight CFRP structures. CFRP however, are poorer electrical and thermal conductors than aluminum alloys that have been used in aircraft and aerospace construction as the principle material. Without additional design features CFRP structures are susceptible to sever damage in the event of a lightning strike. Moreover, electromagnetic fields can penetrate through less electrical conducting CFRP regions into the airplane. Thus, there is a need for lightning protection and EM shielding measures. This study provides an overview of the lightning strike phenomenon, the lightning damage to CFRP structures and the current lightning protection solutions. Advanced materials like polymer-based nano-composites or graphene-reinforced composites are promising candidates for lightweight, multifunctional protection measures, but still with limited stage of maturation.

A copper coating was deposited on Fraxinus mandshurica veneers to create an EMI-shielding, wood-based material via a simple electroless copper plating process. The wood veneers were pretreated in a NaBH4 solution. The wood veneers treated with NaBH4 were immersed in a plating bath in which copper coating was successfully initiated. The coatings were characterized by SEM-EDS, XPS, and XRD. The metal deposition, surface resistivity, and the effectiveness of electromagneticshielding were measured. The morphology of the coating was uniform, compact, and continuous. The grain of the wood was preserved on the plated wood veneer, which had a copper-like color. But the samples were less glossy compared to those from Pd activation. EDS, XPS, and XRD results indicated that the coating consisted of Cu0 with a crystalline structure. The surface resistivity and copper deposition were 0.399 Ω/cm2 and 31.98 g/m2 when the veneer was pretreated with a 3 g/L NaBH4 solution for 10 min and plated for 25 min at 60 °C. The plated veneers exhibited good electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of over 40 dB in frequencies ranging from 10 MHz to 1.5 GHz.
