... According to Creel (2003), this number will double by 2025. This steady increase in coastal population is linked to the several services (both ecological and economic) the coastal areas around the world offer to humankind (Butt et al. 2018). Since the coastal zone of any nation is amongst its most valued possession due to the services it provides, it thus attracts human activities which enhances population growth (Ayyam et al. 2019). ...

This study sought to: i) identify areas susceptible to sea encroachment and tidal flooding in Idabato subdivision; ii) assess the physical, socio-economic and health impacts of sea encroachment and floods; iii) evaluate the extent of sea encroachment from 1978 to 2015; and iv) identify the local adaptation strategies used. A mixed method approach was used in this study. Field observation and key-informant interviews were the main qualitative methods used in assessing the susceptibility of Idabato to sea infringement and tidal flooding, and assess effectiveness of adaptation measures. The quantitative research method in the form of questionnaires was used to assess impacts, perceptions and community adaptation measures using simple random sampling techniques. Remote sensing and geomorphic parameters were used to assess land cover changes; extent of sea encroachment; and the identification of areas susceptible to sea encroachment and tidal flooding respectively. Field observation show that the coastal geomorphology in the study area is characterized by sandy beaches with very fine unconsolidated sediments. Loss of property (buildings, household items, documents), livelihood, work hours, human lives, land and vegetation; increasing disease prevalence (mainly malaria, typhoid and skin diseases) as well as injuries, were among the physical, socio-economic and health impacts experienced in the communities. Landcover changes between 1978 to 2015 revealed a steady increase in water bodies inland from 9.33 km² to 14.75 km² with a net increase of 5.42 km². The common adaptation measures used by the locals include the construction of elevated houses, use of old fishing nets and sand bags, moving inland and in the worst-case scenario, relocating to Nigeria. Development efforts in Idabato have been undermined as the sea continues to encroach with a lot of the infrastructures in ruins.

This study aims to describe the issues and problems of community participation related to the empowerment program entitled PKPT (Development of Strong Coastal Area) in the coastal areas. This study also discusses the importance of creating a participatory development model. This study is essential because PKPT implementation is specific, combining the top-down participation mechanism from the central government with the bottom-up mechanism, namely the northern coastal communities in South Java. The combination of the two mechanisms illustrates the complexity of issues and problems that are not simple because they involve the interests of the central government and the interests of ordinary citizens in coastal areas. Moreover, the focus of this study has yet to be widely studied by previous studies. This study uses a qualitative method applying an action research approach. The informants of the research are organizers of the coastal community, heads of village and village officials, and personnel of the Marine and Fisheries Service of Kebumen Regency in South Java. The result shows that implementing the PKPT program in coastal areas of Java, especially in Kebumen, uses both top-down and bottom-up mechanisms resulting in low participation of the community in the implementation of PKPT substantively. Thus, implicating the lack of sustainability in the empowerment program. This study presents a participatory development model that is expected to be a reference in organizing a sustainable empowerment program for the coastal areas in the future.

Coastal areas with all its potential can become a capital of regional development that will lead to improving the community's economy. Optimization of the utilization and management of the area needs to be carried out on an environmental basis so it will be sustainable, one of which is through the eco-village concept implementation. This study aims to analyze the potencies, determine strategy recommendations, and make a green map, to support the development of mangrove-based eco-villages in Indramayu Regency. The research method is carried out in a descriptive-qualitative manner through Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat (SWOT) analysis, Internal Factor Analysis Strategy-External Factor Analysis Strategy (IFAS-EFAS) for determining priority strategies, and visualization of results through green maps. Indramayu Regency has various potential such as tourism, fisheries, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and the availability of mangrove ecosystems which can support the implementation of the eco-village concept if well-developed. The results of IFAS-EFAS analysis show the coordinates of Pabean Udik (0.070; 0.273), Karangsong (0.314; 0.105), Dadap (0.392; 0.210), and Pabean Ilir (0.122; 0.909). All coordinates are in quadrant 1 which means that the chosen strategy is Strength-Opportunity (SO) which is carried out by optimizing the strength in utilizing opportunities. The potential of the area is described in the form of a green map that makes it easier for stakeholders to know the existing conditions and helps formulate strategies for developing the eco-village concept in Indramayu Regency. Owing to threats to coral reefs due to anthropogenic climate change and other factors, this study aims to clarify the effective development of coral reef management in the waters around Japan by exploring the reasons why people have not participated in coral reef management and identifying the barriers to participation. This study focused on the sentiment of "regret," which was mentioned as a key exemplified factor for behavior modification in previous studies. Herein, data acquired by a web investigation was used for analysis, and two working hypotheses were verified. The first hypothesis was that "Subjective assessment of the existential value of coral reefs is statistically significantly correlated with feelings of regret expressed in the face of steady bleaching and death.". The second hypothesis is that "People who have many intrinsic and extrinsic reasons for not participating in coral reef management activities do not regret confronting such serious situations." As a result of the analysis, Hypothesis 1 was accepted and Hypothesis 2 was partially conditionally accepted. These results suggest the following implementation of the obtained knowledge into practice. That is, many respondents did not participate in management activities that did not have clear objectives, despite regrets based on information on past coral reef degradation; increasing the number of participants by addressing their feelings of regret is not easy. In contrast, manageable administration and accessibility of specialists that offer opportunities for participation in coral reef management are effective solutions for latent citizen participation and facilitate appropriate technical guidance.

Dynamic conditions in coastal areas require area management using the eco-village concept to accommodate all human interests while preserving the environment holistically. Brebes Regency, as one of the coastal areas in West Java with critical mangrove conditions, needs to identify all of the potentials in supporting eco-village development presented in the easiest way to be understood by communities. This study aimed to map the potential and recommend strategic management in the coastal area of Brebes Regency. The method used was descriptive qualitative through SWOT analysis and IFAS-EFAS calculations, and the results are presented as a green map. Based on the SWOT analysis results, Brebes Regency has the potential for eco-edutourism, mangrove conservation, micro, small, and medium enterprises development, fisheries, and community involvement. However, various problems were still found in the efforts to develop eco-villages. The results of the IFAS-EFAS calculation are in quadrant I, so the strategy recommendation is optimizing strengths to take advantage of available opportunities. The green map was made in accordance with the analysis results and can be used by the community to see, assess, and connect the potential in their regions. It has an impact on increasing community awareness and helps policymakers in determining policies.
