A growing body of research suggests the existence of a disconnection between citizens, politicians and representative politics in advanced industrial democracies. This has led to a literature on the emergence of post-democratic or post-representative politics that connects to a parallel seam of scholarship on the capacity of deliberative democratic...

Member exit surveys indicated that, despite these tensions, the participants felt sufficiently informed to come to decisions (see Table 1). Again, this is a case where there is no perfect resolution, just a constant challenge to strike a balance. ...

The discourse on sustainability transformations moves beyond accommodationist, reformist framings of sustainability to imply a radical, systemic shift toward new sustainable trajectories. While democracy has been accorded a central role in sustainability governance of most kinds, this emphasis on systemic transformation, and the new context of exis...

... In the context of deliberative democracy, it is also important to pay attention to where learning actually takes place, as this may influence deliberations and the learning process. Currently, even political scholars such as Prosser et al. (2018) note that 'in practice there has been an emphasis on design and the procedural within democratic innovation, while what is often lacking is detail on the pedagogy of learning' (p. 213). ...

This article outlines methods of practice-oriented teaching at universities integrating democracy, sustainability, and learning in adult education.. The methods highlight the potential for democratic innovation in local communities in which diverse perspectives come together to address societal challenges. With a focus on sustainability and the connection among place, space, and pedagogy it introduces ‘Voice-Resonance Walks,’ a deliberative method piloted in Stuttgart, Germany, for social work education. It also highlights pilot deliberations at the district (Mini-Studentlab Deliberative Walks) and cityscape (Public Transport Walks) levels in Hamburg, Germany, involving interdisciplinary student groups in lifelong learning. These examples illustrate how higher education institutions are engaging with the public sphere, with a particular focus on vulnerable groups of citizens and on fostering civic learning. They aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills to become future experts, decision-makers, and active citizens, capable of understanding the challenges facing both their local neighborhoods and diverse urban spaces.

Het meest verregaande voorstel voor verdieping komt van Fuerstein, die zich beroept op de klassieke democratiedenker Dewey, en stelt dat echte democratie 'consists not merely in a set of procedures for decision-making, but in the "idea of community life itself,"13 where citizens are brought regularly into contact with the desires, beliefs, and practices of others across a broad spectrum of civic and social engagement. ...

... In practice, public deliberation is conducted in forums designed to create nearly ideal conditions for forming, articulating, and refining opinions (Fung 2007). Prosser et al. (2018) argue that research on "pedagogical" aspects of deliberative forums has remained somewhat of a black box, "where previous scholars have sought to place clear lines around the learning phase, there is also a need to stop and colour in the detail" (p. 215). ...
... This prevented residents from discussing a burning issue that preoccupies many of them. Prosser et al. (2018) study "pedagogical relations" in citizen assemblies, conceptualizing participants as students, facilitators as teachers, and expert knowledge as the learning material. In their analysis, the authors show how participation of elected officials in small groups discussion led the groups "to defer to the politicians' greater expertise to explain the complexity around devolution proposals. ...
... ILCCs show the complicated relation between epistemic relations and designs, and specifically show that increasing the level of engagement relies on attention to both aspects for ensuring the quality of deliberation. We propose that adopting such pedagogical openness creates more dynamic relations than the "pedagogical pyramid" suggested by Prosser et al. (2018). However, as we see in the progress of the ILCC, the interactional design of the activities improved as planners realized a more reflexive role, often describing the importance of facilitating multiple voices and local experiences as their primary responsibility. ...

In a yearlong ethnographic study, we actively participated as members of the national planning committee for fourteen local climate conferences, we examined how citizen participation was imagined and enacted. We introduce a framework for studying the relationship between cognitive engagement, learning, and civic engagement in the public sphere. We describe the different levels of cognitive and civic engagement in the design of climate conference activities. The findings suggest that the planners' approach to democracy, the involvement of environmental NGOs, and individual attitudes toward environmental change, may collectively contribute to diminished levels of cognitive and civic engagement among residents. Furthermore, we observed that more collaborative interpretations of cognitive and civic engagement align closely with deliberative democracy approaches, emphasizing inclusive, dialogical processes. We discuss the implications of these findings for the future design of climate conferences and how they relate to the evolving roles of environmental NGOs.
... What is more difficult to assess is the role of deliberation itself separated from the dedicated instruments for learning. While the literature in pedagogy offers support for more interactive and deliberative learning in the classroom (Diedrick, Grattan, and Dienstfrey, 2008;Diaz and Gillchrist, 2010;Johnson et al., 2014), there is very limited cross-fertilization between recent literature in pedagogy and on deliberative democracy (McMillan and Harriger, 2007;Shaffer, 2014;Prosser et al., 2018), even if Freire is recognized as a pioneer in both fields. Moreover, the usage of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that test the impact of deliberation on knowledge formation outside the classroom is still rare (Gronlund, Setala, and Herne, 2010), limiting our ability to separate the impact of deliberation itself from possible confounds such as information provision, age, and individual capacities prior to the process. ...

‘Democratic crisis revisited’ illuminates and reconceptualises the multiple facets of the contemporary crises of democracy in Europe and beyond. It combines context-specific case studies from examples all over Europe, and especially from Eastern Europe, with a theoretical reconceptualisation of democracy. Democracy is conceived of as an ongoing practice of open-ended democratic procedures. Crisis in this view plays a constitutive role for democracy that can disintegrate but also recreate it. Democracy is thus a dialectical struggle between practices of politicisation and depoliticisation, i.e. it produces contingency and processes that decrease it. This understanding of the crisis as constitutive for democracy may open new avenues for democratisation rather than deal it a death blow. This monograph grounds on the pillars of behavioural psychology, change management mechanisms, transformative learning theory, digital readiness, and cultural encounters in digitalized global education. This interdisciplinary idea, theorized by Dr Todd Blayone, was fulfilled in the project "Implementation of Transformative Digital Learning in Doctoral Program of Pedagogical Science in Latvia". In this book, edited by Prof. Irena Zogla, we consider and analyze three cases in Canada, Latvia and Ukraine, which explored transformative digital learning in international and local educational contexts.
... 12 Second, qualitative accounts suggest that learning and opinion changes often do not merely pertain to the short list of items that tends to feature in quantitative studies. They show that participants' opinions may also shift with regard to an issue in general and that learning may occur with regard to the overall functioning of politics and public policy-making -also in the long term (Einsiedel and Eastlick, 2000;Guston, 1999;Jacquet, 2018;Prosser et al., 2018). ...

Deliberative minipublics are popular tools to address the current crisis in democracy. However, it remains ambiguous to what degree these small-scale forums matter for mass democracy. In this study, we ask the question to what extent minipublics have “spillover effects” on lay citizens—that is, long-term effects on participating citizens and effects on non-participating citizens. We answer this question by means of a systematic review of the empirical research on minipublics’ spillover effects published before 2019. We identify 60 eligible studies published between 1999 and 2018 and provide a synthesis of the empirical results. We show that the evidence for most spillover effects remains tentative because the relevant body of empirical evidence is still small. Based on the review, we discuss the implications for democratic theory and outline several trajectories for future research.

These studies assume a degree of urgency as educators worldwide struggle to facilitate transformative online learning experiences to accommodate COVID-19 social-distancing measures, build 21st-century competencies, counter resurgent forms of authoritarianism, and promote global intelligence I will adapt findings from research in network learning, human-rights education, transnational online linking, globalised education and crosscultural analysis. Moreover, I will draw insights from system theories that describe emerging human-machine assemblages in which intelligententities collaborate dynamically while maintaining high levels of autonomy.

Research Proposal
The primary purposes of this post-doctoral research program are to (a) theorise ‘deeply democratised’ digital learning; (b) examine the complex socio-political role of Facebook as a democratising educational technology; (c) systematically investigate a substantial body of learning transactions to investigate the educational value of learner discourse in Facebook, and (d) provide practitioners with an original vision for democratised, socially ‘close’ and globalised online learning. This program will contribute original perspectives and a wealth of new empirical data extending a six-year international program of digital-learning research . Moreover, it will aim to help educators envision original, emancipatory and engaging digitalised educational experiences at a time when such help is vitally needed.

This critique might incorporate key insights from anarchist pedagogies (Amster et al., 2009;Howorth, 2012), which envision education free from debilitating control dynamics, and findings from democratic-deliberation research (De Vries et al., 2010;Englund, 2000;Moore, 2012;Prosser et al., 2018), which demonstrate that expert teachers often function as poor facilitators in contexts where community engagement is a goal. ...
Thesis
This thesis showcases a substantially new approach to exploring the preparedness of humans for the psychologically challenging and technologically disruptive requirements of digitalised learning and work. It consolidates a five-year research program, conducted in Canada and Eastern Europe, catalysed by an interventionist case study exploring democratised digital learning as a pathway to post-revolutionary educational reform in Ukraine. Findings from this study showed that despite initial enthusiasm, many participants struggled to engage successfully in fully online activities. Thus, the author’s attention shifted to investigating the preparedness of students and professionals for successful functioning within increasingly digitalised environments. Seven strategically interwoven investigations were conducted to explore this concern conceptually and empirically, resulting in an equal number of published works. As an original contribution to knowledge, this thesis frames, synthesises, defends and (re)presents these works as exemplary expressions of a unified research program. More specifically, Section 1 introduces the catalysing circumstances, epistemological perspectives informing the works, and the overall structure of this thesis. Section 2 organises the seven-constituent works, provides an unambiguous statement of authorship and presents newly formulated abstracts and backstories. Section 3 critically reviews the research methods and apparatuses deployed. Section 4 articulates and defends significant contributions to knowledge and measured impacts within the global scientific community. Section 5 addresses limitations and projected next steps be-fore offering a consolidating statement. Part Two, inclusive of sections 6-12, present the constituent works in their original published formats (with formal publisher approvals). Finally, Part Three offers a retrospective theoretical afterword that positions the selected works within their ‘thought worlds’ and demonstrates deep interaction with crucial ideas and thinkers across multiple domains.
